Summer Newsletter 2017

President's Message

Hello Friends! I want to tell you something that I know to be true. Your voice counts.

Today I ask you to join me in using your voice to speak up for our Placer County Libraries. Our elected Board of Supervisors will have the 2017-2018 County budget on the agenda of their June 13th meeting. At that time the public may speak to ensure our libraries remain viable and fully funded.
The primary source of funding for our Libraries comes from property tax assessments which are volatile. In recent years 2 of our libraries have closed, and the remaining have been sustained by a supplement of general funds. We are asking the Board of Supervisors to maintain our current level of funding, and to increase it if additional general fund monies are available.

The past few months have been encouraging as Friends groups from across the county have worked together to meet in small groups with our Supervisors, speak at City Council and MAC meetings, and collect signatures from hundreds of supportive library patrons. We have definitely learned that we are stronger together.

In addition to our increased focus on advocacy, we have been busy promoting literacy and the joy of reading in our community. The Rocklin Friends are partnering with members of the Rocklin Police Department to host a once a month "Summer Story time at the Station." These free events will include members of the RPD family reading a story and educating children on safety. Dates and times will be announced soon!

We are also working on a Children's Author Event to be held on August 19th at the Springview Hall located at Johnson Springview Park. This free event will host local children's authors reading their books, having a question and answer time, and will be capped off by an ice cream social!
The Friends Bookstore is now listed on Yelp! If you are a Yelp! user, we would appreciate you taking a moment to rate our store so that we can move up in the rankings and be more visible to those seeking to purchase used books. The bookstore is the largest fundraiser we will do this year and our volunteers spend many hours sorting donations and stocking the shelves. Money earned in our bookstore goes back to our library to assist in collection development.

In closing, people who are passionate about providing access to information, literature, and lifelong learning have always been at the heart of the library movement. This is true now more than ever. Library advocacy doesn't have to be complex; it can be as simple as telling others-at the grocery store, bank, post office, or parties-why you value your library.

This quote speaks to a person who exemplifies her passion for volunteer work with the Rocklin Friends of the Library through her involvement with book sales, social media, and fundraising for our organization, which all benefit the Rocklin Library. We are lucky to have such a volunteer with so many talents in Eve Wise.

During Eve's growing up years, she didn't even know where the library was located in her large community. When she became a young adult, things changed. Reading became her pastime. While sharing books with her friends, her love of books and reading became stronger.

You will find Eve reading historical fiction and fiction books, which are her favorite genres. She especially likes historical fiction during the time period of World  War II.

When looking toward the future of libraries, Eve hopes they never go away and libraries continue to reinvent themselves to stay current. She is concerned that, with the push for e-readers in our tech society, book, themselves, may become extinct. "I love the feeling of holding a book in my hand," says Eve. She feels strongly that holding a book while reading to a child is a better experience for both parent and child then with an e-reader. Another concern of hers is that libraries seem to be purging old book series, making them harder to find. This may leave younger readers unable to experience some of the great old book series of the past. Eve hopes libraries will find a balance of retaining both old and new books for library patrons.

Summer + Rocklin Library = Fun!

It's that time of year again when we start gearing up for our summer program at the Rocklin Library. I am excited to announce the theme for 2017 is: "Summer @ Your Library!" This summer we have two subthemes as well: "Explore. Discover. Do." for the Pre-readers and Readers, and "Reading By Design" for Teens and Adults. Both will focus on summer learning, with all new activity logs and quality incentives that are sure to be a hit for all ages. Similar to previous years, adults can participate by marking boxes on their log for each item they check out. Don't forget that audio books, magazines, movies, and e-books count, too! A big change from previous years is the elimination of tickets to win prize baskets. Instead, every participant who finishes their log will receive a special reward. Everyone's a winner with Summer @ Your Library!

Still think the summer program is just for kids? Think again! Not only can adults participate in Summer @ Your Library by picking up an activity log, but most of our events will be for all ages! Join us for Board Game Bonanza June 21st (12-1pm) and every Saturday at 1:00 pm for our Family Movie Matinee (June 10-July 22). Alternating Wednesday afternoons in Springview Hall Community Center at Johnson-Springview Park, the Rocklin Library will host visiting performers: Sacramento Taiko Dan, Puppet Art Theater, Wild Things!, and Mad Science (check placer.ca.gov/library/events for all the details). Come alone, bring a friend, or bring the whole family (hint: it's the perfect outing for children or grandchildren off from school...). So keep an eye out for the Summer Event Calendar coming soon! We hope you join us starting June 1st for Summer @ Your Library! (Program runs June 1-July 29)

On April 18th Field Trip to the California State Library

At the Placer County Board of Supervisors meeting on April 24th, Supervisor Holmes nominated Trevor Vass to represent District 3 on the Library Advisory Board. 

Trevor has spent the majority of his professional career working in educational technology and he is currently employed by the Sacramento County Office of Education.

As a young child, Trevor's favorite outings included a trip to the library or bookstore to load up on classic Science Fiction. Today, in addition to reading, he has been writing short stories that have been read around the world.

Trevor looks forward to helping increase the reach and stature of Placer County Libraries and support literacy services in our community.

Sandy Davies on Right
In Memory of Sandy Bedwell Davies

Sandy was one of a group of library patrons that librarian Mary Emily Smith formed when Rocklin's library across the street from City Hall was threatened with closure.

She was the founding treasurer for the FOL securing the non profit status in 1982. Sandy was in charge of the brick campaign for the wall inside the 5th St. community room raising over $100,000 for that library building. She was with the FOL group in the State Librarian's office when Pres. Reagan's JOBS bill came on the teletype, and Rocklin was able to get that grant.

In order to build the 5th St. library, a Joint Powers Authority was formed. It was composed of Supervisors, City Council members, and Sandy, who represented the FOL.

An avid reader, Sandy had a beautiful rose garden and collected mice.
