The Student Outreach Program was a one year joint project between the Livestock Marketers of Saskatchewan (LMS) and Saskatchewan Cattlemen's Association (SCA).

The project was designed to promote careers in the Saskatchewan cattle sector to university students. Its activities included field trips, guest lecturers, information sessions, career fairs, and a new website featuring comprehensive profiles of beef industry careers. (BeefCareers.ca).

More details can be found in the

A NOTE FROM TRACE CANADA
Inspectors from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) observed that a significant number of bison, cattle, sheep and pigs received at assembly yards do not bear an indicator approved under the Livestock Identification and Traceability (TRACE) program. We encourage industry associations to remind their members of the traceability requirements.

The CFIA will explore whether the number of inspections and enforcement actions at assembly yards should be increased to address the situation.

Benefits of Attending the Western Canadian Feedlot Management School, a Students Perspective
Courtney O'Keefe
My name is Courtney O'Keefe and I am in the final year of my master's program at the University of Saskatchewan. My studies are primarily focused on ruminant nutrition and my thesis is titled 'Validating the Stage of Maturity at Harvest for Barley, Oat and Triticale for Swath Grazing.'

I would first of all like to thank the Livestock Marketers of Saskatchewan and Saskatchewan Cattleman's Association for giving me the opportunity to attend the Western Canadian Feedlot Management School (WCFMS) in Moose Jaw, SK from February 7-9, 2017.

This was my first time attending the WCFMS and it will surely not be my last. This year's theme of the school was "putting technology to work"- I believe this theme really outlines the way the cattle industry is headed. Embracing the changing technologies and learning to push forward is a major aspect of future success for cattle producers.

If you would like further information on any of the above activities, or to submit an ad or article for the next newsletter, please contact our office.

Sincerely,
