Nominate a Great Place in Pennsylvania

APA PA is looking for
Great Public Spaces and Great Streets

The Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA PA) will be recognizing "Great Public Spaces" and "Great Streets" in 2017. Do you know of a public space or street that truly stands out in what it offers residents and visitors? Do you think it merits designation as a Great Place in Pennsylvania? If so, NOMINATE IT!

Nominations will be accepted through April 18, 2017. For more information, including guidelines, category criteria, and the nomination form, please visit the APA PA website: http://planningpa.org/about/great-places-in-pennsylvania-2/ . All Great Street and Great Greenway/Trail nominations must be submitted online at http://planningpa.org/events-training/great-places-in-pennsylvania/great-places-submission-form/ .

What Makes a Great Place?
Great Places offer better choices for where and how people live, work, and play. They are enjoyable, safe, sustainable, and desirable. They build a sense of community by being places where people want to be, to not only visit, but to live, work and/or play every day. Great Places also give their communities an economic boost by helping to attract and retain residents and businesses.

Many criteria, including functionality, accessibility, connectivity, community involvement, economic opportunities, forward thinking planning, and others, define Pennsylvania's Great Public Spaces and Great Streets. APA PA will recognize successfully designated Great Public Spaces and Great Streets through an array of activities, such as:

News and social media releases statewide and locally about the designations

Recognition on the APA PA website

Coordinated attendance of APA PA representatives at local designation ceremonies in
communities choosing t hold such events.

Presentation of a Great Places Certificate and Window Clings

Recognition at the APA PA Annual Conference.

YORK COUNTY WALKS
Taking steps toward better health!

Spring is here and it's the perfect time to get outdoors and walk!

The Healthy York County Coalition launched York County Walks last year to promote the healthy benefits of walking and to advocate for improved walkability of our communities.  Look at the walking opportunities coming up in April:

National Walking Day:  The American Heart Association's "National Walking Day" is Wednesday, April 5.  This will be a great day to invite co-workers, family and friends to take a walk.  Their web site provides a tool kit to help you get started.  Here's a link for more information:  http://www.heart.org/HEARTORG/

Take a Walk in the Park:  Memorial Hospital will be leading weekly walks every Thursday, 5:30 p.m. April to October.  The first walk will be held Thursday, April 6 at Cousler Park.  See attached flyer for more details.  https://www.mhyork.org/

The Walking Revolution documentary:  Kaiser Permanente created this 30-minute video to support their "Every Body WALK" initiative.  It's both educational and inspirational.  Check it out:  http://everybodywalk.org/documentary/

Schedule a York County Walks event:  The Coalition can lead an interactive presentation for your workplace, neighborhood, church, etc. to help jump-start a walking program.  Over the past two years Coalition volunteers (including retired physicians) have met with over 800 people to share ideas on how we can support each other walking more.  The sessions are lively and motivational.  Call the Coalition for more information.

PennDOT Connects

"State DOTs are no longer just held accountable for the transportation system; they are also held accountable for how the system supports and improves quality of life for communities."

This statement is a guiding concept for the PennDOT connects effort. Under this effort, PennDOT is committed to enhancing community collaboration in their planning process. If you are associated with a municipality or a transportation stakeholder, the YCPC Transportation Staff invites you to the next York Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (YAMPO) meeting on April 27, 2017. The meeting will be held in the York County Commissioner's Meeting Room, 28 East Market Street, 2nd Floor, York, PA,  starting at 9:00AM. Jim Ritzman, Deputy Secretary of Planning at PennDOT will present PennDOT's vision for the new PennDOT Connects effort.

In summary, PennDOT Connects will include meetings with municipalities during the project scoping stage to discuss community impacts, comprehensive plans, corridor studies and possible improvements. When community visions are documented, PennDOT will work with the community to evaluate the benefits of including, collaborating or supporting the project as part of or in concert with the PennDOT lead project.
