Bookseller Recommendations

Peter Recommends:

The Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz
Horowitz gives us two for the price of one in this cleverly constructed story-within-a-story. Are clues to the curious death of famed mystery writer Alan Conway encoded in the manuscript of his final Atticus Pund novel? Trust Susan Ryeland, editor-turned-sleuth, to find the truth. Devotees of the golden age of English detective fiction will delight in Horowitz's obvious affection for the genre.

Lorna Recommends:

Dragon Teeth by Michael Crichton
This recently discovered novel from the late best-selling author Michael Crichton has the feel of Jurassic Park by way of The Great Train Robbery.  Based on the real-life rivalry between two paleontologists, it tells the story of a Yale student who joins one of the scientists' groups on a westward journey.  The student aims to win a bet and utilize his brand-new skill -- photography.  This is a fun summer read.  I have missed Michael Crichton.

Phyllis Recommends:

Temporary People by Deepak Unnikrishnan
Unnikrishnan introduces us to the plight of guest workers in the United Arab Emirates. In somewhat dystopian, very imaginative style, we learn about the poor treatment and truly fringe existence the workers from southeast Asia and the Indian Peninsula must endure to earn a pittance to remit to families back home.  Sound familiar?  Same story, different locale.

William Recommends :

You Belong To Me by Colin Harrison
This new novel from Colin Harrison is a wickedly satiric thriller set amongst the wealthy of New York City, and it details the way things become obsessions, the way possessiveness becomes compulsory.  With dense, Pynchon-esque prose, we meet a lawyer who covets an antique map of the city, a young wife with a secret past, an Iranian businessman who rigidly controls his wife, a soldier with a secret love, and a woman who desires nothing more than a child.  Their paths cross with those of criminals and killers as their obsessions become quixotic.

"A book is a friend whose face is constantly changing. If you read it when you are recovering from an illness, and return to it years after, it is changed surely, with the change in yourself."
