PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
May was a very busy month highlighted by IHLA's Hospitality Awards Luncheon during the National Restaurant Show at McCormick Place in Chicago. Paul Daly, Ginny Morrison, Nabil Moubayed, Tom Robertson, and Al Friedman were all honored at the event. Over 400 hotel industry guests attended this wonderful event that recognized the many contributions to our industry by these worthy recipients. Just prior to the Awards Luncheon, IHLA hosted a very informative hotel industry leadership panel presentation at the NRA Show. Thanks to Panel Moderator Ron Vlasic and panelists Bob Habeeb, Nabil Moubayed, and Biff Hawkey for sharing their industry insights with the large NRA Show audience.

Also in May, IHLA participated in AH&LA's annual Legislative Action Summit (LAS) in Washington, D.C. on May 17-18.This year, AH&LA joined forces with the Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AHHOA) to demonstrate a strong voice for the lodging industry on Capitol Hill. IHLA had 18 members who registered for the event along with 5 AHHOA members from Illinois. Our Illinois group heard from several keynote speakers and then met with and educated both of our Illinois Senators and 14 members of the Illinois Congressional Delegation on key issues affecting our industry at the federal level. Thanks to all our IHLA members who joined us and represented Illinois at this national political event during a critical year with a new Administration and Congress.

June will be another eventful month starting with our General Managers Breakfast Meeting on June 13th hosted by Sara Kearney at NoMI Kitchen in the Park Hyatt Chicago. Our featured speaker during the breakfast will be Tom Tunney, Chicago Alderman of the 44th Ward that includes Wrigley Field. IHLA Member Hotel GM's should confirm your attendance with Emma Cheong by June 7th.

Also in June, IHLA's Educational Foundation Scholarship Committee will begin the process of evaluating all those who have applied for 2017-2018 academic scholarships. The process will conclude with personal interviews of the final candidates on June 29th in IHLA's office. We look forward to awarding approximately $50,000 in 2017-2018 scholarships to deserving students from Illinois who are pursuing hospitality management degrees.

Finally, IHLA is looking forward to hosting our 11th Annual Pony Up for the Kids Fundraiser at Arlington Park Racecourse on July 13th. This event will be a lot of fun and help raise money for IHLA's Educational Foundation Scholarship Program. Click
HERE for more information and to register.

Thanks to all of our members for their continued support.

GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS
Illinois Hoteliers in Washington, D.C. for AH&LA's LAS
On May 17th and 18th, a large contingency of IHLA member hoteliers along with the Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AHHOA) joined nearly 500 hoteliers from across the country in Washington, D.C. for AH&LA's Legislative Action Summit (LAS). LAS provided a great opportunity to hear from Congressional leaders in D.C. and to meet with the Illinois Congressional Delegation.

The featured speakers updated us on the political climate in D.C. and offered their perspectives on the status of some key issues facing our country and industry. The featured speakers also provided some great advocacy tools to use when meeting with Members of Congress to brief them on our issues.

Meetings were scheduled with Senators from Illinois and 14 Congressman. During our meetings, we not only briefed them on the important economic contribution of the hotel and tourism industry, but we asked for their support on three key issues:
  1. Co-sponsor the ADA Education and Reform Act of 2017 (H. R. 620) which would provide a "notice and cure" provision that would give small business owners time to address an ADA violation before any legal proceedings can move forward
  2. See more transparency from Airbnb and other short-term renal companies regarding the prevalence of commercial activity on their platforms
  3. Co-sponsor the Stop Online Booking Scams Act, which would protect consumers from online hotel booking scams by prohibiting websites from pretending to be the hotel and requiring these websites to prominently display that information
Thanks to our members who joined us in representing Illinois at this national political event and demonstrated a strong voice for the lodging industry on Capitol Hill.

Constellation Webinar for Energy Buyers
2017 Energy Market Outlook
Wednesday, June 21| 1:00 pm CDT

Topics Include:
  • Updated Summer Outlook: Could a weak El Nino lead to a hotter summer?
  • Current Supply & Demand: How fundamentals have been supporting NYMEX above $3/MMBtu since April and what role new demand drivers are playing.
  • The Shale Revolution: The tectonic shift in the global hydrocarbons trade and shifting global energy demand. What could this mean for your business.

Purchasing Your Power through the IHLA Energy Program
You have options for how you buy, manage, and use your energy supply. Do you know what having other pricing options and strategies means for your bottom line? Does your price include broker fees? Read Constellation's energy purchasing article to learn more about your choices for purchasing your energy. If you're interested in having a Constellation representative talk with you about your opportunities, visit energy.constellation.com/IHLA.

Carbon-Free Electricity Plans & EFECs
This is a pivotal time for energy - future energy demands must be met with less impact on our climate and with minimal burden on the nation's economy. Take action toward environmental and climate change goals by supporting the production of electric power from generation sources that do not directly emit greenhouse gases from combustion. By purchasing carbon-free electricity from Constellation, your business realizes the value associated with power generated from Exelon's CO2 emissions-free nuclear generation fleet. You may be familiar with Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), which are created to represent the renewable attributes of each MWh of electricity generated by a renewable source. Emission-Free Energy Certificates (EFECs) similarly are created to represent the emission-free attributes of generating sources, such as nuclear, that do not directly emit greenhouse gases from combustion.
