Greetings!
Recently, our Board of Directors met at the Henry Ford Estate Fair Lane in Dearborn, and it gave us a chance to reflect on what it means to be a leader, be creative, and to work collaboratively on what we love: the humanities. After a passionate commitment to advocating for the humanities, and seeing a funding increase for the NEH in the FY17 federal budget, we now know that we will need to regroup and approach communicating the value of the humanities with renewed vigor. Our board, staff, and constituents are the vanguards of what we hold dear.
We are in full swing with launching a new humanities grant round, preparing for the 2017-18 Great Michigan Read, and strengthening our long-standing partnership with the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs. There is much to look forward to, and our work is more important than ever. As a trusted and respected colleague Ken Egan stated, “We’ve made a decision to focus on the value of the humanities that endures and sustains us—bringing citizens together to learn and reflect on enduring questions, current dilemmas, diversity, artistic ingenuity, and more.”
So keep fighting the good fight with us as we continue our work with community partners, and look forward to the future.

As we breathe a small sigh of relief that the FY 2017 budget has been approved with a funding increase for the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), we must also watch and listen to the discussions for FY 2018. T
he NEH is still slated for elimination in FY 2018 under the Presidents proposed budget. While w
e are confident that Congress and the Senate will not let that happen, there is much work to be done, and we are asking for your help.
Have you received a grant from Michigan Humanities Council? Have you been involved in Poetry Out Loud or Great Michigan Read? How has an MHC grant or program helped your community and your neighbors?

e are asking you to write a short letter, and let us know.
The positive impact that an Arts & Humanities Touring Grant can have on a school or senior center is hard to measure, but we know that you have a story to share. Please take a few minutes this week and write it down for us.
Your community is important

The 2017-18 Great Michigan Read is
"X: A Novel" by Ilyasah Shabazz and Kekla Magoon. Written by Malcolm X's third daughter, the novel tells the story of Malcolm's childhood, and includes memories of his time living in Michigan, his travels to Boston and New York, and the experiences that ultimately shaped his beliefs and made him the iconic figure that he is today.

HUMANITIES GRANTS
Draft proposal deadline is approaching--don't miss this opportunity to receive feedback on your proposal from MHC!
Don't forget: Draft proposals must be submitted to MHC by
July 1st
in order to allow adequate time for feedback to be provided and incorporated into your final application.
Do you have a project idea to explore for a possible Humanities Grant? The draft proposal form is now available on the MHC website. A draft proposal is not required prior to the submission of a final grant application, but it can provide valuable feedback as you further develop and fine-tune your project proposal and final application, due by August 17th.
New Opportunity in 2017-18!
In order to offer more flexibility in project planning and implementation, MHC will offer two application periods for Humanities Grants during 2017-2018:
Fall 2017 Grants
(Awards made in November 2017)
Spring 2018 Grants
(Awards made in June 2018)
NOTE: The availability of 2017-2018 Humanities Grants is dependent on the continued funding of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) in the FY18 federal budget.

Heritage Grants Web Portal Coming Soon!
As our latest round of Heritage Grants wraps up, we are excited to roll out the Heritage Grants Digital Portal, a platform to showcase the digital media produced by our grantees.
The website will be up and running by July 3rd, and we invite you to visit the site and explore video, audio, and photos that reflect the hard work and dedication of the Heritage grantees, and the rich and diverse history of Michigan's communities.

Arts & Humanities Touring Grants Now Closed

Thank you to everyone who applied for an Arts & Humanities Touring Grant!
Funding is no longer available for 2017. Applications will open again in November for programs occurring between December 1, 2017 through August 21, 2018. Keep an eye out on our website and social media for more information.
Watch for information concerning the Touring Directory update this Fall. Details coming in August 2017.
