Hagerstown Regional Airport to Host AirPower History Tour

The B-29/B-24 Squadron of the Commemorative Air Force brings together the aircraft, pilots and crews from over 70 CAF units across the country to create the AirPower Squadron - an ever changing assortment of military aircraft touring together to bring the sights, sounds and smells of World War II aviation history to audiences across the United States.

June 7th through the 11th, be sure to check out some exclusive access to these aircrafts with various dates & times for different rides! Click here for more, only at the Hagerstown Regional Airport!

The AirPower Squadron always includes at least one of the two rarest World War II bombers in the world - FIFI, the most famous, flying Boeing  B-29 Superfortress and Diamond Lil, an equally rare B-24 Liberator. Aircraft accompanying the B-29 or B-24 will include other World War II aircraft such as the P-51 Mustang, the B-17 Flying Fortress and the B-25 Mitchell, along with an assortment of fighters, trainers and liaison aircraft.

The Humane Society of Washington County Announces 12th Annual LuHowl

The Humane Society of Washington County (HSWC) will host the 12 th Annual LuHowl fundraiser for homeless animals on Saturday, June 10 th from 6 pm to 9 pm at Historic Milestone Farm in Williamsport, MD.

"We're very excited about some unique and different things happening at LuHowl this year," said Nikki Houser, Corporate Partnership and Event Manager. "In addition to our traditional silent auction, there will be a new live auction. Guests can also expect to see an authentic hula dancing performance."
During the Hawaiian-themed event, attendees can bid on auction items donated by numerous individuals and businesses in the community, including overnight getaways, wine-tasting excursions, jewelry, and original artwork.  In addition to enjoying heavy hors d'oeuvres, drinks, music and dancing, guests are also welcome to tour a private car museum, owned by Don Bowman.

The 4th Annual Jone Bowman Champ Award will also be presented at the event. Chosen based upon her history of advocacy for both the HSWC and animals throughout the community, this year's award will be presented to Linda Domer. Ms. Domer volunteers as a dog trainer at the shelter and offers her services to adopted dogs requiring additional manners training. She also championed the Happy Hounds Prison Dog Program, which trains inmates to become canine handlers so dogs can learn obedience while awaiting adoption.
"We invite everyone to come and enjoy a fun and relaxing evening to kick off summer," said Houser. "Not only is LuHowl a great fundraiser for the animals, it's also a wonderful way for people to meet fellow animal lovers in this community."

Tickets are $50.00 per person and can be purchased online at hswcmd.org or at the front desk of the shelter. All proceeds from the event benefit spay/neuter programs for animals at the HSWC.

USMH Receives $300,000 Grant from Appalachian Regional Commission

The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) announced on Friday its approval of a $300,000 grant to the University System of Maryland at Hagerstown (USMH) to support nurse practitioner (NP) and physician assistant (PA) training programs in Hagerstown. The programs' planned start dates are the fall of 2018 and the fall of 2019, respectively. The NP program will be offered by Frostburg State University (FSU), while the PA offering will be a joint endeavor of FSU and University of Maryland at Baltimore (UMB).

Maryland and the rest of the nation face a shortage of primary care physicians, NPs and PAs. USMH and its partners seek to address this shortfall through theestablishment of these clinical training programs, which will produce new clinicians who will serve local patients during their training, and who will be likely to practice in the region upon graduation.

USMH is responsible for renovating, furnishing and equipping its space in the Walnut Street Clinic building that will house these new programs. The ARC funds will be used to help obtain equipment, furniture and technology to outfit exam rooms, classrooms and offices. As a stipulation of the ARC grant, USMH must provide 1-1 matching funds.

"We are grateful to the ARC for approving the grant," said Mark Halsey, USMH executive director. "These advanced practice programs will help to meet a critical workforce shortage while boosting our local economy and contributing to the economic development of downtown Hagerstown. The ARC serves a vital and irreplaceable community development role in rural America."

USMH continues to raise the full and necessary funding for these advanced practice programs, including all necessary renovations and equipment, and scholarships for local students.
