The Space Between The Notes
John Williams,  Executive Director

French composer Claude Debussy is credited with saying "Music is the space between the notes".  In other words, the music is not the notes themselves, but the silence between them.

Now, as I look at the empty space where the barn once stood, my imagination runs wild with all the possibilities for 317 Main's future.

Footage of the barn/garage attached to 317 Main being torn down on May 20th, 2017. (The barn was structurally unsound.)

Yesterday, seemingly out of nowhere, Debussy's quote about music being the space between the notes popped into my head.

As sad as it was to not be able to save the old barn, and as exciting as it is to think about further growth and expansion of music, dance and other forms of community building and artistic expression, we now have this opportunity to fully experience, utilize, and appreciate "the space between the notes".

Over the coming weeks and months, we want to hear your thoughts, ideas, and wishes for 317 Main and our future. We are continuing to organize community discussions with small groups to solicit your input.

I also welcome the opportunity to meet one-on-one and/or during the first Wednesday of each month, when I will be in the café from 8:30 to 9:30am with the intention of discussing and answering questions about 317 Main's future.

I look forward to working collectively with all of you to make the music in the space between the notes!

WE ARE GROWING AND EXPANDING ACCESS - THANKS TO YOU
Sally Struever,  Interim Director of Development
Best friends are all smiles at East End Community School as they take home violins supplied by 317 for the first time
This year, community support has enabled us to focus on expanding access,   reaching more than 1500 student musicians from more than 40 Southern Maine communities through our education or cultural enrichment programs. More than 500 of those students participated for free through our school and community partners.

We've more than doubled the size of our Little Roots programs for our youngest musicians, and launched a creative aging program called Deep Roots, for musicians and music lovers over the age of 55.

We've increased the number of financial aid recipients for our classes and lessons by 30%.

It is your generosity and your belief in the
Little Roots musicians learning what the mandolin sounds like
power of music that will make it possible for 317 Main to reach more people across a broad spectrum of age, musical experience, and financial resources.

Donors like you help to raise 40% of our annual budget - more than $350,000 - to support our partnership programs with nine schools and nonprofits, offer financial aid for lessons at our studios, and fill the gap between tuition and the true cost of the 317 Main experience.

Please consider a donation to 317 Main today.

317 MAIN TO TAKE PART IN MAKE MUSIC PORTLAND JUNE 21st
A day-long celebration of community music-making

From the Post Office Plaza Stage in 2016

One of our guiding principles at 317 Main is the belief that Music Is For Everyone meaning  we want to share the joy of making music with people of all ages, ethnicities, and economic backgrounds.

Make Music Portland was founded on the same idea.

This free,  day-long music event takes place on June 21st - the longest day of the year - in Portland, and in other cities around the world.

In Portland, there will be live music throughout the day at more than a dozen locations including Monument Square, Congress Square Park, Longfellow Square Park and Tommy's Park.

For the second year in a row, 317 will host the Post Office Plaza location at Market and Middle Streets, where we'll have free programming from 10am-8pm.

Performers include The Flukes, (Falmouth Library Ukulele Society) The Boys & Girls Club Rock Band, Casco Bay High School Students, The Maine Immigrant Musical Instrument Project, as well student groups from 317 Main.

"What I'm most excited about this year is that we have other community arts organizations that are jumping in on this fun day," said 317 Main Partnership Program Coordinator Jake Hoffman, who is in charge of our Post Office Plaza venue.

Please show your support for community music making by joining us for part of this fun day.

If you work in Portland, come see us at lunch hour and bring a few friends.

After all, Music Is For Everyone!
