Anti-violence Message at the Focus
of New School Year
As violence in Chicago continued to dominate the headlines, ASA began the school year with a peace rally, sponsored by the Chicago Community Trust's Fund for Safe and Peaceful Communities. ASA later hosted a Building Bridges event, in collaboration with North Lawndale Employment Network. The Building Bridges event featured students participating in a peace circle with representatives from the Chicago Police Department to provide a chance to dialogue about the need to improve relationships between the community and police, particularly to break down the barriers between police and community youth.

Sen. Lightford Visits ASA

During her visit to the school, Illinois Senator Kimberly Lightford offered encouragement and spoke candidly to students about overcoming challenges. Sen. Lightford's visit was a chance for students to show their appreciation for the Senator's support for continued funding for the Re-Enrolled Student Program, an initiative to keep students engaged in education and to complete their requirements for high school graduation. Illinois Sen. Lightford was one of the supporters of the RSP in the state legislature.
