Oklahoma Veteran Connections Embarks on Information Sharing Meetings

Oklahoma Veteran Connections has had several information sharing sessions with the following interested agencies:
  • ODVA
  • DAV
  • BRRX4VETS/Community Service Council
  • Tribal Representatives
  • Goodwill/TulsaWORKS
  • South Tulsa Community House
  • Coffee Bunker
  • Family and Children's Services
These have been helpful to us, as insightful questions and comments are always raised during these sessions (that usually last about 60 minutes). After these sessions, we share information and make requests of UniteUs, the developers of this sophisticated and highly flexible software that will help our agencies and our veterans. We expect to have a Strategy Session in early July with interested agencies. These sessions will be led by Oklahoma Veteran Connections and UniteUs and will last 90-120 minutes. If your agency wants to have an information sharing session with us, please  contact me.

We are very pleased with the progress we have made in the past two months. F eel free to contact me with any questions or for more information.

June is PTSD Awareness Month

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) impacts millions of people and their families. After a traumatic event, most people have painful memories. For many people, the effects of the event fade over time. The purpose of PTSD Awareness Month is to encourage everyone to raise public awareness of PTSD and effective treatments. We can all help those affected by PTSD.

You Need this Shirt, We Need You!

We have created 30 special WPEO T-shirts for the first 30 people to volunteer with Tulsa Habitat for Humanity for the June 22 Build. It will be a fun day as we work together to help create a home for a qualified Habitat Home owner. The house we will be working on is not necessarily for a veteran, but we encourage veterans to apply to Habitat to qualify and we expect that during 2018 we will have at least one veteran family that has qualified!

You do not have to be a veteran to sign up - you just need to have a heart to help veterans.

2-1-1 Oklahoma Answers the Call

2-1-1 Oklahoma is a statewide program shared by two regional organizations - Tulsa-b ased Community Service Council (CSC) and Oklahoma City-based HeartLine. The program enhances access to community services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round.

Many of these requests are for basic needs, like food, housing and health care. For Eastern Oklahoma alone, 2-1-1 provided help for 120,000 requests for assistance during 2016.

VA Holds Obesity Awareness Walk in Tulsa

The Eastern Oklahoma VA Health Care System (EOVAHCS) MOVE! Program teamed up with WHEELS Global Foundation and the VFW Post 577 to hold a 'NObesity Revolution' 2K Walk on May 20 in Tulsa.

The goal of the event was to inform veterans and their families about the dangers of obesity and to encourage healthy eating and exercise. According to VA statistics, 80% of veterans are considered overweight or obese which is more than the general population.

Dr. Uma Koduri, EOVAHCS Primary Care Physician, was the main speaker for the event and spoke about the 5-2-1-0 Concept for Adult Obesity.

Oklahoma Veteran Connections Welcomes John Schueler to the Leadership Team

John Schueler gained extensive experience in helping communities improve collaboration among agencies with his work in the Tampa Bay area. Now, John will be leading the fundraising effort for Oklahoma Veteran Connections, a critical and challenging task. We are fortunate that John and his family moved to Tulsa last year and that he wants to help our community.

Sincerely,
