The Orange County Business Council (OCBC) recently shared information about WannaCry ransomware cyberattacks, affecting upwards of 200,000 computers in more than 150 countries. OCBC's Cybersecurity Consultant, Brian Leach, shares some advice below on how to keep your personal and business' information safe from a cyber attack.
What to watch out for currently is the name of the attachment loaded with ransomware nm.pdf. This name could change at any time, but NO attachment or link is safe to open right now that shows nm.pdf.
Some additional tips are not opening any attachments or links from anyone until verifying first by phone or in person that the individual did in fact send you an attachment, even if you expect an email from that person; Do not open direct links from sites who send you newsletters. Instead, go to that site manually in your browser and view the article directly; Do not launch your browser from a link in your email! This is especially dangerous for emails from LinkedIn, Facebook, Dropbox, Google Docs/Drive, OneDrive, iCloud Drive, Amazon Drive, etc.; Do not check your personal email from business computers; When searching the Internet, be vigilant regarding links. Do not pick the first link blindly; Lastly, do not download document/spreadsheet templates, images or sound files from free websites.
