NEWS & UPDATES
Spotlight On: The City of Milwaukee Tobacco-Free Alliance

"We want to remind the LGBTQ community that you can be yourself, have fun, and be smoke-free," said Anneke Mohr, coordinator for the City of Milwaukee Tobacco-Free Alliance  , which is led by the Community Advocates Public Policy Institute .

The Alliance applauds the inclusion of three nonsmoking areas on the grounds of PrideFest Milwaukee , to be held Friday, June 9, through Sunday, June 11. Designated nonsmoking areas include the Exercising Pride: PrideFest Health and Wellness section, the Youth Area, and the Children and Family Stage. PrideFest organizers also ask people to refrain from smoking in the new PrideFit area (featuring yoga, dance, and movement) and in the History and Stonewall areas.

The Alliance works with community organizations to advocate for additional smoke-free places in Milwaukee, from large public venues such as Miller Park to apartment buildings, to protect nonsmokers from the harms of secondhand smoke and to support those who are trying to quit smoking.

Ensuring that some portions of Milwaukee PrideFest are welcoming to non-smokers was a high priority for the Alliance, Mohr said.

"The LGBTQ community smokes at roughly twice the rate of the general public due to a variety of factors, including bar culture, coping with discrimination, and industry targeting, so we're glad that PrideFest Milwaukee is showing support for families with small children and those trying to quit by creating smoke-free spaces," said Mohr. "The LGBTQ community values diversity and inclusion, and the smoke-free spaces show that everyone, especially those who are trying to quit smoking and families with small children, are welcome at PrideFest Milwaukee."

The Alliance, which will have a table in the Health and Wellness area, has produced videos about the pervasiveness of tobacco and its harm to the LGBTQ community as part of their Tobacco-Free Pride initiative. The videos will be released on social media during the festival and feature local entertainers, athletes, and families.

"We also ask those who have been impacted by tobacco to share their stories with us through the Tobacco-Free Pride initiative," Mohr said.

MCSAP sponsored a
Drug Take-Back event in West Allis
April 29 Drug Take-Back Day Collected 66,000 Pounds of Unwanted Medication

The Milwaukee County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition (MCSAP), coordinated by PPI's Kasaundra Brown, has been working hard to educate Milwaukeeans about the importance of getting rid of unwanted and unused medications in the home. MCSAP has even worked with local law enforcement to place permanent, secure drug take-back bins in most police stations around the county and, along with its community partners, sponsored a Drug Take-Back event in West Allis in March, which netted 60 pounds of unwanted medications in just four hours. MCSAP and PPI are part of the Take Back Your Meds Milwaukee Coalition, which is also focused on safe drug take-backs. (Here's a list of pharmacies, free mail-back envelope locations and other drop-off locations in Milwaukee County.)

Looks like that increased awareness is paying off. During the statewide Wisconsin Department of Justice Drug Take-Back Day, on Saturday, April 29, a record-breaking 66,000 pounds of unwanted medications were collected and disposed of.
