Dear Friend of Girls Inc. of the Island City,

IMPACT.   It is what every nonprofit strives for. It is what every supporter expects. It is what Girls Inc. of the Island City (GIIC) delivers to nearly 500 girls every year through proven and transformative programs.

GRUFF, Girls Reading to Understanding Furry Friends,  is just one of the innovative programs developed by GIIC that is making an IMPACT . In partnership with Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter (FAAS), GRUFF provides girls the opportunity to practice reading in a non-judgmental environment while helping to socialize shelter animals.

Big thank you to Claudine Wong and KTVU Fox 2 for featuring GRUFF on Bay Area People. See the segment HERE

Please donate to our May appeal and help us continue to make a strong, smart, and bold  IMPACT  with innovative programs such as GRUFF.  Your generous contributions also support the following programs that continue the tradition of inspiring and empowering girls  by offering new and exciting ways to learn, to develop, and to reach for the stars.

ETHICAL FASHION SHOW (EFS)  is a ground-breaking event featuring teen-created runway designs made from upcycled materials. It is based on teens researching and understanding the global problem of waste, especially in  the apparel industry, and producing an outreach video. The actual show is the culmination of a six-week program  comprised of intensive, hands-on workshops with experts in design, patterning, sewing, finishing, business  planning, modeling, and make-up.
Meet Raquel: 8th grader and participant in EFS. Raquel shares, "I learned a lot from EFS about how you can design and produce really great fashion while doing something good for the environment. I feel very fortunate I had this opportunity because I learned from the successful women at VF Outdoor how to use my creative skills in ways I had not imagined. My grandma bought me a sewing machine and I was always scared to use it. Now I have  the basic skills and confidence to make something for myself. I used to watch Project Runway and think 'I could never do that,' but now I know I can."

BEST FOOT FORWARD (BFF). The Women Who Dare awards luncheon showcases Best Foot Forward,  a multi-workshop program that teaches girls ages 6-12, interview skills, scriptwriting, public speaking, and  professional etiquette. The girls meet and interview all the Women Who Dare awardees and explore a diverse range  of career paths, learn the real-life stories of women who impact the community, and meet new role models. At the  awards ceremony, they co-host the event, network with guests, and present the awards.
Meet Camilla: 5th grader and graduate of BFF. Camilla has enjoyed participating in the program every year that she's been coming to GIIC. She credits BFF with improving her social skills, teaching her how to talk to a crowd, and giving her self-confidence. Camilla "loved that she met role models who showed her that she too can achieve great things." She said, "This experience has changed me. These women (the awardees) were brave enough to do something amazing to help their community. It was inspiring to learn about them and from them."

Be assured, when you invest in  strong, smart, and bold girls like Daneisha who was featured in the video, Raquel, and Camilla, your tax-deductible donation immediately makes a difference in the lives of all our girls.

We thank you for supporting Girls Inc. of the Island City.
 Sincerely,
Christine Chilcott
