This edition of the NAMI-NYS E-News begins with save the date information for this year's education conference. Be sure to put November 10-12 on your calendar as we look forward to having you join us in Albany for what is sure to be an historic conference. This issue also contains an update on Congressional Budget Office's assessment of the American Health Care Act and information on the officer responsible for the death of a woman with schizophrenia in the Bronx.

2017 NAMI-NYS Education Conference
November 10-12
Later this week, NAMI-NYS will be officially announcing the details of our 2017 Education Conference-
Engagement, Implementation, Intervention: Three Pronged Approach to Sustainable Mental Health Recovery. We want to make sure you save the dates November 10-12 as we are sure you will not want to miss the year's conference. The Conference Committee has been hard at work and this year's conference will introduce elements new to our conference format which we are very excited about. Look for the official announcement mid-week.

NAMI-NYS Holds Support Group Training
This past weekend, NAMI-NYS hosted a training for new support group leaders. We thank everyone who took the training and will go back to their communities to demonstrate why NAMI-NYS and our affiliates are a place to find help and find hope.
NAMI-NYS to Hold Second Bowling Fundraising Event
Following the success of May's Bowling for Hope event, NAMI-NYS will be holding Bowling for Hope Second Strike on July 21st from 6-8pm.
Come join us for another night of fun and friendship while supporting a great cause, the
2017 NAMIWalks NYS. The event will be taking place at the
East Greenbush Bowling Center, 570 Columbia Turnpike East Greenbush, NY 12061.

New CBO Score on AHCA Confirms Devastating Losses to
Mental Health System
NAMI reports how the newly released Congressional Budget Office (CBO) score confirms devastating losses to mental health care in the House-passed American Health Care Act (AHCA).
"Under the American Health Care Act, it is estimated that 23 million Americans will lose coverage for mental health care by 2026, including 14 million who will no longer be covered by Medicaid," said Mary Giliberti, CEO of NAMI. "This will force people with mental illness out of work, onto the streets, and in our jails and emergency rooms. All this will do is shift costs and overwhelm local communities, emergency rooms and law enforcement."
According to the CBO report, the AHCA will slash $834 billion from Medicaid over ten years. "Medicaid is the cornerstone of the public mental health system. Cuts of this magnitude will deplete mental health services and jeopardize care for people with the most severe mental health conditions," said Giliberti.

New York City Police Officer Charged with Murder in Death of Woman with Schizophrenia
In October, we reported on the tragic case of Deborah Danner, a woman living with schizophrenia in the Bronx who was killed by a police officer. Last week, the officer Sergeant Hugh Barry was charged with second-degree murder, first- and second-degree manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide, and was suspended without pay.
Police officers rarely face criminal charges in deaths that occur when they are on duty, and murder charges are even more rare. Mayor Bill de Blasio and the police commissioner, James P. O'Neill, said Sergeant Barry had not followed police protocol for dealing with people with mental illness. Specifically, he did not use his stun gun to try to subdue Ms. Danner, and he did not wait for a specialized Emergency Service Unit to arrive.

Thurman Thomas & Daughter Speak Out on Mental Health
In an interview with NBC affiliate station WGRZ in Buffalo, NFL Hall of Famer and Buffalo Bills great, Thurman Thomas, and his daughter, Annika, discussed her struggle with depression. Annika details the point in high school when her depression and anxiety reached a boiling point. Feeling misunderstood and alone in the wake of the death of four of her dogs, Annika turned her phone off and drove away from the Thomas Family home. Convinced that they had to help their daughter, Thurman and his wife, Patti, admitted Annika to Erie County Holding Center for treatment.
Battling depression and suicidal ideations, Annika dropped out of high school, but later returned to earn her GED. Both Thurman and Annika have since become active in the African American community to spread a message of support and understanding regarding mental illness, worried that it is often treated as a non-issue or a taboo subject.

40 Million Americans Suffer From Anxiety Disorders
A New Book Explores Why
In a recently published memoir, On Edge: A Journey Through Anxiety, Andrea Petersen details her experiences leading up to being diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. Petersen's book goes on to delve into research on anxiety disorders, and to explore why they lag behind other mental illnesses when it comes to acceptance. Anxiety disorders can be roughly attributed to a misfiring of the brain's fight-or-flight response and have a higher prevalence in women than men, a trend which On Edge explores in detail.
Vogue magazine recently interviewed Ms. Peterson. It is also important to note the fact that magazines such as Vogue are now discussing mental health issues. This type of coverage is a giant step in mental health awareness.

NIMH Director Josh Gordon was interviewed for a recent segment on the NPR news program All Things Considered. The story, As Brains Mature, More Robust Information Networks Boost Self-Control, explored an NIMH-funded study on executive functions in the brain.

The episode was recorded when Dr. Heinssen was one of the featured speakers at our 2016 Education Conference. In the episode, Dr. Heinssen discusses several NIMH initiatives, the road ahead with new director Dr. Joshua Gordon and how New York State took findings from the NIMH Recovery After Initial Schizophrenic Episode (RAISE) study to introduce the progressive early intervention program OnTrackNY.
Several NIMH Studies on Irritability in Children
Looking for Recruits
Why study irritability? During the 1990s, there was a significant increase in the number of children being diagnosed with bipolar disorder. After years of studies, NIMH researchers concluded that, although children with severe irritability were being diagnosed with bipolar disorder, severe irritability and bipolar disorder are not the same. However, irritability, like bipolar disorder, can be very impairing for children, and little is known about what causes it or how to treat it. Therefore, today, NIMH clinicians continue to investigate severe irritability and the related diagnosis of Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD).
Children pass through many phases of development as they grow up. It can be hard to know if a child is going through normal development or showing signs of something more serious. Occasional outbursts are a normal outcome of being tired, uncomfortable, or frustrated. In some children, it can be chronic and explosive.
Children who enroll in NIMH studies have irritability that significantly impacts their functioning at home, in school and with other children.
