Roxbury Schools Communication Effectiveness Survey
Roxbury Township Public Schools is striving to become a certified NJ Sustainable School as outlined in our district goals for this year.
Sustainable Jersey for Schools
is a certification program for New Jersey public schools that want to go green, conserve resources and take steps to create a brighter future, one school at a time.
As part of the certification process, the district needs to evaluate the effectiveness of its communication strategies. That's where you come in!
We are interested in learning more about your thoughts, feelings, and attitudes towards how Roxbury Township Public Schools communicates with you!

Roxbury's Summer Kickoff this Saturday at Horseshoe Lake
Join the Roxbury High School Student Council on Saturday, May 20th as they are hosting their first Roxbury Summer Kickoff at Horseshoe Lake starting at 12 p.m. There will be live music, food trucks, vendors, exhibitions, and activities in which everyone can participate. Bring your blankets, chairs, frisbees, and enjoy the day with your town! Cost is $5 or $3 with a canned food donation.
We are also opening this event up to the town. So if you have a fundraiser you would like to do or advertise for, a business you would like to promote, a product you would like to sell, or even just a fun idea for a table that you think people would enjoy, please feel free to contact kmathis17@students.roxbury.org! We will not be taking ANY form of your profits, this is just a venue for you to conduct business, advertise or whatever you would like!
EMS STEAM Program Dominates the Solar Car Races

It was another stellar day on the 18th for the

Picatinny STEM Solar Car Races!
Overall, we had 15 teams of 2 participate and 11 of those teams won races to make it to the playoff rounds! So proud of our awesome

A Dozen Student Athletes Sign NCAA Division Letters
 A dozen student-athletes from Roxbury High School participated in a signing ceremony last Wednesday committing to play their respective sports at the NCAA collegiate level.
RHS Athletic Director Stuart Mason said, "We are fortunate to have several of our outstanding athletes join nationally recognized programs, many for Division 3 programs."
Coaches, players, teammates, and family members joined these athletes at their signing early Wednesday morning.

Caring Student Award Presented to Senior Deanna Burns
 Roxbury High School Senior Deanna Burns was selected for this year's Caring Student Award. She was honored at the Caring Student Award Ceremony Tuesday at Berkeley College.
This award is presented by the Morris County Professional Counselors Association and is given annually to a senior who has given to others selflessly and often unrecognized. One student from each high school in Morris County is selected.

RHS Senior Garrett Dexter Wins the Young Artist Competition at
NERTEC
 Roxbury High School Senior Garrett Dexter won the Young Artist Competition at the North East Regional Tuba & Euphonium Conference (NERTEC) held at Ithaca College in New York this past April 28th-29th.
NERTEC features national and international artists in performances and master classes, along with presentations and panel discussions on a variety of topics. The conference is hosted by Dr. Justin Benavidez and the Ithaca College School of Music.
Dexter competed along with PJ O'Dacre of Horseheads High School, NY, Max Dichter of Millburn High School, New Jersey, and Benjamin Quinones of SUNY Potsdam in the Young Artist Euphonium Category.

Roxbury High School Dance Concert
 Last Friday was the annual Advanced Dance Concert at Roxbury High School. In case you missed any of the performances, here's your chance to see them again thanks to Gaelvision!
RHS Introduces Makerspace Projects: Space to Make at the Maker's Pace
 After attending a Makerspace workshop in February, RHS Media Specialist Roxana Caivano was inspired to do something exciting and engaging with the students by launching Makerspace projects. A Makerspace program is one in which students are essentially self-directed in creating something. They are supplied with basic directions, materials and a goal, but the students decide where they want to take it. Makerspaces and STEM labs are what's hot in the world of libraries and media centers. It's all about making, creating, sharing ideas and skills, working together, and using your mind to do something fun and fabulous.

EDITORIAL: Robot Magic
 You know those movies and TV shows where life-like robots run around performing all the tasks we don't want to do?
Sometimes they look like us. Sometimes, they look like inhumane hunks of steel and gears. But, they make us think: What if?
On the robotics teams at Roxbury High School and Mount Olive High School, hundreds of students aren't just thinking about them. They are building them, from year to year, and competing them against other similar robots built in other high school districts all over the country.
Now, let's keep it real. They don't look like storm troopers. They don't walk upright on two legs and talk. But, they are, nonetheless robots. They are student built and student driven, and they can do things. Things like pick up balls and discs, and deposit them in hoops and holes. They can lift things up. They can climb. We've seen it. It's impressive.
But what's most impressive are the enormous amounts of time, dedication and effort all these students in both districts put into it. In Roxbury, the Roxbotix team is relatively new. Advisor Lee Hayden is making it happen, however. We've seen the Roxbury kids at the competitions these years, and they are a growing force in the robotics competition world, known as F.I.R.S.T. That stands for "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology."

Instrument Test Drive Invitation for Roxbury 4th Graders and their Families
 The Roxbury High School Instrumental Music department will be holding a Roxbury Instrument Test Drive for all 4th grade students.
This event is designed as an "open house" style - come and visit any time that is convenient for you and your family between 4-7 p.m. in the Roxbury High School cafeteria on Wednesday, May 24th.
Our goal at the Instrument Test Drive is to expose your child to the instruments that are available next year and your child will have the opportunity to play each one.
Students will also meet our district instrumental music teachers along with several Roxbury band and orchestra students.
If you and your child cannot attend the Instrument Test Drive, information regarding signups and instrument requests will be communicated through your child's general music teacher. Please feel free to contact us with any questions.

Google Expeditions -- iPod Touch Requests
The Roxbury School District is working to bring Google Expeditions to our students. In order to help with this effort, the Technology Department is asking if anyone has any old iPod touches they are not longer using anymore that they would be willing to donate to the district.

Roxbury Baseball Updates:
Roxbury Baseball Enjoys a Win Against Mendham on Senior Day
The Roxbury High School baseball team enjoyed Senior Day on May 12 by beating Mendham in a high-score game.
It was a 10-7 victory on for the Gaels, a win bolstered by a 6-run second inning. By the fourth inning, Roxbury was leading 10-2.

Mendham (7) at Roxbury (10) - Baseball - May 12th
Andy Axelson went 4-for-4 and knocked in one to lead Roxbury to a 10-7 victory over Mendham in Succasunna.
Will Findlay had two hits, scored a run and had two RBI and Ryan Ditrolio was 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI for Roxbury. Thomas Dariling earned the save with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Roxbury Baseball Flattens Parsippany
 The Roxbury High School baseball team crushed Parsippany-Troy Hills on May 15 in a 20-3 victory that included two 3-run home runs for Andy Axelson. Click here to read more game coverage from Tap Into Roxbury.
Parsippany Hills (3) at Roxbury (14) - Baseball - May 15th
Andy Axelson went 3-for-3 with one double, seven RBI and two home runs as Roxbury defeated Parsippany Hills, 14-3, in Succasunna.
Darren Wyse pitched a five-inning nine-hitter, giving up three earned runs, with three strikeouts and one walk while Nick Danna went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run for Roxbury, which had a total of 16 hits and scored 11 runs in the first inning. Click here to read this coverage in NJ.com.
Roxbury (10) at Randolph (7) - Baseball - May 17th
Michael Roumes went 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBI for Roxbury in its 10-7 victory over Randolph, No. 20 in the NJ.com Top 20, in Randolph.
Thomas Darling finished 2-for-4 with three RBI for Roxbury, which scored three runs each in the second and third innings to take a 6-4 lead and followed that up with at least one run in each of the next three innings. Roxbury clinched the NJAC, National Division with the victory.

Mount Olive (6) at Roxbury (7) - Softball - May 11th
Natalie Decena drove in the game-winning run with an RBI single as Roxbury defeated Mount Olive, 7-6, in Succasunna.
Decena finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs. Madison Ketch went 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBI for Roxbury. Madison Amdur drove in two runs. Emily Song was 2-for-5 with a solo home run and scored three runs.

Hailey Womer went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI as Roxbury defeated Parsippany Hills, 9-3, in Morris Plains.
Madison Ketch finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs for Roxbury. Jessica Michaels had two hits and an RBI. Natalie Decena scored two runs.

Roxbury Boys Lacrosse Updates:
Glen Rock (4) at Roxbury (15) - Boys Lacrosse - May 11th
Matt Dancsecs scored five goals and had an assist to help Roxbury, No. 19 in the NJ.com Top 20, earn a 15-4 victory over Glen Rock in Succasunna.
With a 6-3 lead at halftime, Roxbury outscored Glen Rock 8-0 in the third quarter, 14-3.
Eric D'Arminio contributed five goals, while Dave Biank added two goals and had six assists. Paul Shadel scored two goals and had four assists, while Anthony Perhacs added a goal and had two assists. Goalkeeper Wayne Safreed made five saves for Roxbury. Click here to read this coverage from NJ.com.
Roxbury Boys Lacrosse Wins League Trophy
The Roxbury High School boys lacrosse team beat Pope John 9-2 on a very wet morning May 13 to take home the NJILL Rizk League trophy. The Gaels, with a 6-0 league record, are the only undefeated team in the league.
The victory over Pope John followed another important win, the May 11 Senior Night domination over Glen Rock.

Eric D'Arminio tallied five goals with two assists and Matt Dancsecs added three goals to lead Roxbury, No. 19 in the NJ.com Top 20, to a 9-2 victory over Pope John in Succasunna.

Roxbury Boys Lacrosse Beats Kinnelon as Win Record Soars
 With a win over Kinnelon, the Roxbury High School boys lacrosse team on Monday improved to 16-3 its already impressive record. The Gaels played their game against the Colts on a wet grass field covered with goose droppings, but overcame the less-than-ideal conditions to win 10-5. Roxbury (10) at Kinnelon (5) - Boys Lacrosse - May 15th
Eric D'Arminio scored a team-high three goals and Dave Biank and Anthony Perhacs added two goals each as Roxbury beat Kinnelon, 10-5, in Kinnelon.
Goalie Wayne Safreed made 13 saves for Roxbury, while D'Arminio, Biank, and Paul Shadel tallied two assists each.

Goalie's House Fire Doesn't Stop Roxbury Boys Lacrosse from Advancing in States
Even though its goaltender was dealing with a family crisis, the Roxbury High School boys lacrosse team easily beat West Windsor Plainsboro South on Wednesday to advance in the state tournament.
The 17-3 victory came less than 24 hours after Gaels' starting goalie, Brandon Maresca, was
left homeless by a house fire. Thanks to the defense of No. 2 seeded Roxbury, Maresca didn't see the ball at his end of the field the entire first half.
In an interview earlier in the day, Roxbury boys lacrosse coach Chris Blough said Maresca - despite the tragedy - made a point of coming to school and playing in the important game. On the field, the 17-year-old Maresca made 5 saves.

West Windsor-Plainsboro South (3) at Roxbury (17), NJSIAA Tournament, First Round, North Jersey, Group 3 - Boys Lacrosse - May 17th
Eric D'Arminio scored a game-high six goals along with two assists as second-seeded Roxbury defeated 15th-seeded West Windsor-Plainsboro South, 17-3, in the first round of the North Jersey, Group 3 tournament, in Succasunna.
Dave Biank finished with four goals and three assists for Roxbury. Paul Shadel added three goals and three assists. Matt Dancsecs and Owen Tarnowski each had two goals and one assist.

Roxbury (2) at Westfield (18) - Girls Lacrosse - May 11th
Hannah Liddy had three goals and five assists for Westfield, No. 19 in the NJ.com Top 20, in its 18-2 victory over Roxbury in Westfield.
Olivia Shields added three goals, and Sydney Paoletti, Lila Hutchins, McKenna Edmondson and Carley Farella all chipped in two goals each for Westfield.

Emily Koepfler and Emma Karnitsky each recorded three goals and an assist for Roxbury in its victory over Wayne Hills, 14-4, in Wayne.
Mia Sadowski tallied two goals and an assist for Roxbury. Five other scored a goal as well, including Hannah Bhend who also had an assist. Natalie Shulkowski notched five saves in net.

Lady Gaels Off to Strong Start in Lacrosse
The Roxbury High School girls lacrosse team got off to a strong start Monday in the state tournament.With the win, Roxbury (13-5) tied a school record for wins in a single season.
Emily Koepfler tallied four goals with an assist and Sadie Wilson added two goals with an assist to lead fifth-seeded Roxbury to an 11-1 victory over 12th-seeded Middletown North in the first round of the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3 state tournament in Succasunna.
Mia Sadowski added one goal with two assists, including her 100th point of her career, for Roxbury, which advanced to Thursday's second round and will visit fourth-seeded Hopewell Valley. Sadowski now has 102 career points.

Roxbury Girls Lacrosse Keeps on Winning
 One day after barreling over Middletown North to win the first round of the NJSIAA Tournament, the Roxbury High School girls lacrosse team on Tuesday crushed another team: Governor Livingston.
The Gaels defeated the New Providence based Highlanders 15-6, riding high on multiple-goal efforts by Melissa Murphy, Mia Sadowski, Emily Stanich and Hanna Bhend. Points also came from shots made by Emily Koepfler and Emma Karnitsky.
The victory followed the team's May 15 routing of Middletown North in the first round of the state tournament. The fifth-seeded Gaels held their 12
th-seeded opponent to only one point while scoring six in the first half and five in the second to win 11-1 and advance to the second round. That game, against No. 4 seed Hopewell Valley takes place on May 18.
Roxbury is now 14-5 on the year.

Gov. Livingston (6) at Roxbury (15) - Girls Lacrosse - May 16th
Melissa Murphy led Roxbury with three goals and two assists as the team beat Governor Livingston, 15-6, in Succasunna.
Mia Sadowski and Emily Stanich each added three goals. Emily Koepfler recorded a goal and an assist. Hannah Bhend found the back of the net twice, and Emma Karnitsky scored and handed out an assist. Goalie Natalie Shulkowski made four saves.

Roxbury's Smith, Morris Hills' Chappell Impress on Day 1 of Morris County Championships
 There was plenty of way to stay motivated at the 2017 Morris County Tournament Tuesday.
For
Roxbury
's Alexis Smith, it was to make sure she made the her last county tournament her best. For Dajon Chappell of
Morris Hills
, it was about keeping his sights on the NJ#1 distance in the javelin.
It was that motivation that led those two, along with several other athletes, to a successful first day at Boonton. Smith placed first in the 400m race for the second time in as many years and finished with an NJ#5 time of 56.84 seconds.

Roxbury Track & Field: NATIONALS!
 The Roxbury Girls Track and Field Sprint Medley Relay team qualified for the New Balance Outdoor National Track and Field Championship in North Carolina! Now...they just have to get there! Please consider helping them represent Roxbury at the most competitive high school track and field meet in the nation!
The Roxbury Track and Field team has already accomplished so much this season and they would love to complete the season running at the biggest high school meet in the country. They are the current Morris County Indoor Champs, Morris County Relay Champs, State Sectional Champs, Indoor National Qualifiers and now Outdoor National Qualifiers. What better way to end the season than with this opportunity and to represent Roxbury with pride? This huge accomplishment will be the first one for Roxbury in about 10 years!

Kindness for Christopher Color Fun Run - June 11th
 Join the Roxbury High School's Interact Club for its 4th Annual Color Fun Run on Sunday, June 11th at Horseshoe Lake. Registration starts at 9 a.m. with the event starting at 10.
In the past 3 years, they've raised a total of $47,000 for families in need, such as Mike Corrente and Joey Clayton, who were both suffering from brain cancer. These runs attract people from all over the state, and around the country, who want to raise money and have fun! We have a
color run
, zumba class, musical performances, a DJ, sandwiches, ice cream, a color throw, and more!!
This year, our cause is
Kindness for Christopher. Christopher D'Amico is a 10-year-old boy who passed away at Lake Hopatcong after a pontoon boating accident. Christopher was always smiling, and spread kindness wherever he went. Because of this, the D'Amico family decided not to let his legacy of joy fade. They started a small movement, encouraging people to commit random acts of kindness, particularly on the 24th of every month. This movement quickly grew ten-fold, and is now worldwide!
Our mission is to raise money to aid the family in spreading kindness in every way possible. So this is our challenge for you: In addition to the $25 ticket price ($30 if you pay the day of and $20 if you are a group of 10 or more), we ask that you do one random act of kindness for someone, whether it is carrying groceries, leaving a nice note on someone's car, buying coffee for a person in front of you online, bringing home flowers for a loved one, or doing ANYTHING that will spread Christopher's legacy of kindness.

 We are excited to announce that GardenStateHSW.com has selected Roxbury to Host the 5th Annual Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex All Stars vs the Morris County All Stars on May 20th at 1:00pm at the Roxbury High School.
Representing Roxbury this year will be Matt Meola, Ricky Reimers, Dominick LaRusso and Scott Jarosz.
Proceeds benefit local charities including Susan B Komen. Please come out and show your support.

Roxbury Township Public Schools are continuously collecting "Box Tops for Education" at our K-8 schools.
This is an easy, practically effortless way to raise funds for our schools by purchasing items you buy all the time.
Clipped box tops can be sent to any of our K-8 schools district-wide. School addresses can be found on our website at www.roxbury.org.

Roxbury, Rockaway Students Honored for Excellence by County Freeholders
Spyridoula Fontinis of Roxbury and Michael Gosden of Rockaway Borough accepted county certificates from the Freeholder Board on Monday, May 8, to honor their selection to the Academic Team.

Roxbury Alumni Association is Looking for Board of Directors
 The Roxbury Alumni Association is looking to expand its current board of directors. They are looking for energetic alum interested in getting involved with Alumni Association and to add new members to its board. Interested individuals should reach out to Mr. Charlie Alpaugh the president of the association at 973-584-8805.
The Roxbury Alumni Association was established in the early 1900s and formally incorporated in 1968. Every year the Alumni Association provides a scholarship to a graduating senior. The association also purchases a Echo yearbook and donates it to the Roxbury Township Library for its archive.
Membership is only $10 and with your gift, you directly support the ability for the Alumni Association to continue giving a RHS grad a scholarship. You are also supporting the association as it develops new programs and events for you to enjoy.

10th Annual Benefit Beach Blast - June 16 (rain date June 17)
 Come join the Roxbury Arts Alliance, Roxbury Recreation Department and the Roxbury Police Department in celebrating our 10th annual fundraising event. Music, Horseshoe Lake beach, free kids activities, dunk tank, and food for purchase, ending the night with spectacular fireworks!
This is the only event that funds our scholarships to Roxbury graduates. Over $25,000 in scholarships given these past 19 years.
Morris Habitat Will Host 'Hammers For Heroes' Event on June 3
 Morris Habitat For Humanity will host a "Hammers For Heroes" special fundraising event on Saturday, June 3.
The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the lawn outside the Morris Habitat ReStore, located at 274 S. Salem Street, Randolph. The event is dedicated to veterans and future Morris Habitat homeowners. Everyone is invited to register and participate in this event.
"Hammer for Heroes" offers a unique opportunity for participants of all ages to take pride in new learning skills while having fun, according to Morris Habitat.
Individuals, families, friends, religious groups, and corporate teams will lift their hammers and create walls for a future Morris Habitat affordable home. Besides the build, there will be food, music, crafts, face painting, a bouncy house and much more.

'Lake Hopatcong For All' Suggest Lake Behavior, Courtesies
Call it a suggested
code of conduct.
Some might call it common sense courtesy.
Officially, however, the
Lake Hopatcong Foundation
is calling is "Lake Hopatcong For All."
It's a list of guidelines aimed at stemming boating problems, particularly those experienced in the Byram Cove section of the lake, over the course of the past few summers.
"The Lake Hopatcong Foundation has been working to facilitate an agreement among various users of the lake to address the controversy which arose this winter over proposed new boating regulations," foundation member Marty Kane said.

Volunteers Needed for Annual Roxbury Community Benefit 5K Race
The Roxbury Project Graduation Committee is looking for Volunteers! High school kids welcomed also for volunteer Hours. Volunteers are get a free shirt.
The Morris County Striders Running Club is hosting their annual Roxbury Community Benefit 5K race (formerly the Merry Heart 5K) on Monday, June 12. Project Graduation receives a donation from the race for providing marshals along the race course. The job of the marshal is to keep the runners on course, to prevent neighborhood traffic during the race and to cheer the runners on!
The race starts at 7:00. Volunteers are asked to be at their location by 6:45. Volunteers will be at their location for 30 minutes to an hour.

Roxbury continues to deliver innovative customer service with their new self-serve on-line portal called 24/7 Rox. Now you can keep up-to-date with all the exciting news in Roxbury Township. On any day at any time, you can query property information, search and track your permit, schedule a building inspection, receive status updates, file a service request, or research any property in town. You are no longer limited to access town hall during regular business hours; Roxbury Township is open 24/7!
In addition to 24/7 Rox, we also offer another way to access our Township with our full-featured, mobile app, Connected Roxbury NJ. The app is free and available in the app store for IOS and Androids. All the information on our website is now in your hands and goes where you go. There are quick links to the Roxbury Newsletter, Online Payments, Notification Sign-Up, Agendas, Calendar and more; all at your fingertips.  The Roxbury Area Chamber of Commerce will host the 11th annual
Taste of Roxbury culinary event from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, May 22, 2017 at the Roxbury High School.
This annual fundraising event will benefit community charities. Attendees will sample food-as much as they'd like-prepared by local restaurants.
This great evening of eating and socializing will feature great food, door prizes, music and a more!
Tickets are $25 and must be purchased in advance and are available at the Roxbury Recreation Dept. (Succasunna), Fulton Bank (Succasunna), and online at

Mid-Year Registration for Grades 5-12
 Roxbury's Applied Music Program is one of the most celebrated after school programs in the region. Blessed with award-winning music educators offering world-class instruction, the program nurtures local talent, empowering students to pursue careers in entertainment well after graduation.
This is a district-wide program that provides a high-quality enhancement to classroom instruction. Teachers are all specialists on their instrument or vocal specialty. All of our teachers are trained professional musicians and highly qualified in their instrument of expertise. Private study is extremely valuable to the individual student and highly encouraged. Private study is offered as enrichment, NOT remedial instruction. It is encouraged for the complete development of each students' potential as a performing musician and/or artist.
We are beginning mid-year registrations for those students interested in taking private lesson. Once the form and registration fee are received, your child will be assigned a weekly lesson time.

RHS Financial Literacy this Summer
The New Jersey Department of Education has mandated that all students are required to complete a course (2.5 credits) in Financial Literacy to be eligible for graduation. Due to the number of students requesting to take this course, we have decided to offer the class as an online summer course (we will continue to offer the traditional Financial Literacy course at Roxbury High School as well).
The course will be available to Roxbury High School rising juniors and seniors only during the summer of 2017. The course will begin on Wednesday, July 5, 2017 and run for approximately seven weeks. This interactive course will include writing assignments, labs, quizzes, and tests.
The final exam must be taken in person at Roxbury High School during the week of August 14, 2017. If the student does not fulfill all of the requirements for this class, no credit will be given and the appropriate grade will be listed on the student's transcript.
