It has been an eventful few weeks at the Dufferin Board of Trade (DBOT). On May 17th we hosted our first ever Think Local Food Showcase in conjunction with our Annual General Meeting. This fantastic event highlighted our successes over the past 12 months and took a look at what is to come for this organization moving forward. The Dufferin Young Professionals Committee  hosted their first event of the year which saw the young professional community gather to network, connect, and learn! Our ever active Dufferin Women In Business committee hosted their  Decompressing the Sandwich Generation event to great acclaim.

Of course, with all the positive happenings around the DBOT office, there is always the tough issues that arise. On the heels of the Provincial Government announcing their sweeping employment and labour reforms, the Dufferin Board of Trade took action to ensure the voice of the business community in Dufferin did not go unheard. We have been vocal opponents of many of these reforms, from the time that they were only speculations, to the present reality now that the reforms have been officially announced.

We must work cooperatively with government to identify the scale of the economic impact of these changes and  help employers transition into any new policy regime . We will continue to be cooperative partners with government and the Ontario Chamber of Commerce and Keep Ontario Working Coalition to find solutions that will, where possible, inhibit negative impacts on the growth of Ontario's economy, our people, and our communities.

Also, join us in celebrating #localfoodweek by endorsing the new Headwaters Food Charter!

Sweeping Changes to Ontario's Employment and Labour Laws - Key Points for Businesses in Dufferin

On May 30th 2017 the Government of Ontario announced sweeping changes to Ontario's employment and labour laws. The Dufferin Board of Trade and the Ontario Chamber of Commerce have been vocal opponents of many of the reforms maintaining that they tip the economic balance in a profoundly negative way. These sweeping changes have the potential to negatively impact youth employment, job creation, economic growth, consumer prices, and the very existence of many small businesses who are far less resilient to the impact of these reforms, especially with regards to the minimum wage hike.

These changes will have compounding costs which the government has not yet fully understood. That is why we have called on the government to conduct a comprehensive economic impact analysis. This analysis should have clear acceptability thresholds, and the reforms implemented should be limited to those that pass such thresholds or are being implemented with a commensurate economic offset measure, in order to help businesses transition into any regulatory changes. An economic impact analysis is the only way that the Government of Ontario can protect jobs and workers against the unintended consequences that may come as a result of implementing the reforms announced and the recommendations in the Changing Workplaces Review.

This brief from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce considers whether politics will interfere with renegotiating a better, modern NAFTA that will benefit Canadian business.

Tick-tock! The U.S. Trade Representative just sent the official notification to Congress that NAFTA negotiations will begin in 90 days. The Canadian government must now negotiate and resolve all the hot button issues with our American and Mexican friends-in the midst of a highly charged political environment. How will it play out?

For the next 90 days, every special interest and aggrieved Wisconsin dairy producer will have a chance to provide input during the consultation period under Trade Promotion Authority. Then, whatever new agreement is negotiated must pass the House and the Senate. All three governments want NAFTA 2.0 wrapped up ASAP. Canada wants to end the uncertainty that is hurting investment, and for our partners, it is even more urgent.
