MHLS is pleased to announce the appointment of Laurie Shedrick to the position of Technology Operations Manager. Laurie begins this week in her new position.

Ms. Shedrick has held the position of Business Manager with Innovative Interfaces Inc. (III) since 2011, a leading library technology solutions company serving thousands of libraries in 66 countries and offices worldwide. At III, she managed account plans for libraries throughout the northeast including MHLS, the Nassau Library System, and the Suffolk Cooperative Library System. She served as the MHLS Automation Systems Manager 2002-2011 and as the Library Director of the Town of Ulster (NY) Public Library 1994-2002. Ms. Shedrick was awarded a Master in Library Science degree from the State University of New York in Albany, and a Bachelor of Liberal Arts in History degree from the State University of New York in New Paltz.

"Laurie has exceptional expertise and experience in the development, management, and evaluation of library technology operations," said Tom Sloan, MHLS Executive Director.  "Her outstanding work for III, MHLS, and as a public library director is a superb match for supporting the MHLS community," stated Sloan.

Ms. Shedrick's duties will include working cooperatively with MHLS 66 member libraries and a wide range of vendors to administer integrated platform services including the MHLS Sierra/Encore ILS, cataloging services including copy cataloging and the maintenance of more than 650,000 bibliographic records, and IT services including help desk support, technology purchasing, and the hosting of member websites.

The MHLS community thanks MHLS Technology Operations staff who have provided excellent services during the search for the new Technology Operation Manager. Thomas O'Connell has served as Acting Technology Operations Manager; Nina Acosta has served as Acting Automation Coordinator; and Courtney Wimmers has served as Acting Cataloging Specialist II. Gerry Formby, IT Coordinator, also assumed considerable new responsibilities during the interim period.

Libraries Awarded $20,000 Grant Sponsored by Assemblymember Barrett for Summer Reading Programs: MHLS has received a $20,000 Special Legislative Project Grant sponsored by Assemblymember Didi Barrett to support summer reading programs in 16 public libraries in Assembly District 106.

Assemblymember Barrett issued the following statement in response to the announcement of the grant. "Our local libraries play a critical role in our communities. For children of all ages our libraries are the gateway to new information and new worlds. They encourage imagination and intergenerational sharing. I am pleased we could provide support to our outstanding libraries in the 106th district with funding for their Summer Reading Programs. I hope it will help launch new lifetime readers."

"We thank Assemblymember Barrett for her support of summer reading programs," said Tom Sloan, Executive Director of the Mid-Hudson Library System. "Assemblymember Barrett's support is vital to providing this essential education program which advances the excitement of reading and learning that takes place in the classroom," Sloan stated.

Hudson Area Library to offer "Drag Queen Story Hour": In collaboration with Out Hudson, the library has announced the first installment of Drag Queen Story Hour. Drag Queen Story Hour is just what it sounds like - drag queens reading stories to children. Ella Ghent, a local drag performer, will read stories, accompanied on a ukulele, that celebrate diversity, self-expression and creativity. There will also be a drag treasure chest with costumes for kids and complimentary cookies from Trixie's Oven. This is a family-friendly and inclusive event.
