A Letter from One Veteran to Another

Life is challenging. Stress exists. No different in civilian life than when you wore the uniform. It's hard to avoid. What you can do is make sure you are as prepared as you can be to cope with it. We can all benefit from repurposing some of the stress reduction techniques that served us well in the military.

A Sweet Way to Promote Mental Health Month
Hurry! Only 10 days left!

With seven cupcake flavors to choose from including three that are gluten free, cupcake therapy has never been easier!   Or more delectable!

"Cupcake Therapy" is the feature all this month at Rheinlander Bakery in Olde Town Arvada.

During May, you can enjoy a Mental Health Month specialty cupcake, with $1 from each cupcake sold benefiting Jefferson Center for Mental Health and continuing efforts to reach out and help those who are struggling with a mental health or substance use issue. Efforts like this to involve the community also help to eradicate the stigma, and help make behavioral health as easy to talk about as physical health.

Last year the sweet treat option was surprisingly successful.  Rheinlander raised more than $2,000 from the please-your-palate effort.  This year looks to be every bit as rewarding.

"This year most of our customers are excited to see that we have new flavors," says bakery manager Hannah Jackson.  She adds "it's actually surprising to see how many of our customers know about Jefferson Center and are excited to indulge in delicious cupcakes and be of support."

If Italian food is more your fare, on May 24th, 3 Sons Restaurant at 14805 West 64th Avenue in Arvada will host "Mangia...for a Cause."  A portion of their proceeds that evening will support veterans and military families, in their efforts to adjust to civilian life.

For veterans, sometimes adjusting to civilian life can be a challenge, and that can be difficult as well for their families.  Jefferson Center has been involved in continued efforts to reach out and provide support and services for both those who've served our country and their families who support them.

We've heard the statistics before - 1 in 5 people will struggle with a mental health issue or substance abuse issue in any given year, so the need is significant for our friends, co-workers, and family members who could be affected.

Last year alone, Jefferson Center served more than 30,000 clients, so the ongoing need is definitely there.

Whether sweet or spicy is your flavor of choice, promoting mental health awareness and supporting Jefferson Center is a tasty pleasure during Mental Health Month.
