First-Time Attendees Have Great Experience
at Annual Scientific Assembly

MAFP is excited to announce we already have 10 first-time attendees registered for this July's  Annual Scientific Assembly.  Dr. Bernadette Gilbert, MD, of Clinton, gives her perspective on attending the MAFP Annual Scientific Assembly for the first time:  "As a relatively new physician to Mississippi, the ... MAFP Annual Scientific Assembly was the first of such conferences that I attended. I had the pleasure to take part in the conference through many roles by serving as a presenter, moderator and attendee. ... From taking part in additional CME sessions, to participating in the family activities, to catching up with colleagues, my experience was outstanding. I plan to attend the conference again and if given the opportunity would love to serve in the same roles. I strongly encourage all of our fellow family medicine physicians to take part in this awesome conference."

Sandestin Rooms will be dropped June 13 - Do you have yours?  RESERVE A ROOM AND REGISTER TODAY

Foundation Asks Members  to 'Sign On'
The MAFP Foundation recently invested in outdoor lighting for our building sign at 755 Avignon Drive in Ridgeland. Pictured above, the sign is visible at night on the well-traveled Lake Harbour Drive. We are asking members to "sign on" for the sign  by making a tax-deductible donation to the MAFP Foundation to help offset the cost of the sign and the electricity to keep it lit.

MAFP Exhibits at
MSMA, MOMA Conventions

We love seeing our member physicians at Mississippi's medical-related conventions! MAFP exhibited last week at two meetings held in Sandestin, Florida, and was able to make valuable contacts.

MAFP staff members Kay-Lynn Meador and Jewell Buckley attended the May 25-28 Mississippi State Medical Association (MSMA) convention. Beth Embry, MAFP Executive Director, attended the Mississippi Osteopathic Medicine Association (MOMA) conference held May 30-June 1.
The meetings were a great way to promote our upcoming CME meetings to members and non-members, discuss membership benefits, encourage attendees to purchase the Live Healthy car tag, and explain the tobacco project.
Two family physicians - Dr. Jason Farrar, left, a PGY-3 at EC-HealthNet in Meridian, and Dr. Richard A. Nance of Meridian - stopped by the MAFP booth during the MOMA conference in Sandestin. Nance was the lucky winner of a free registration to MAFP Annual Scientific Assembly.

UMMC Group Wins First Prize in AAFP Tar Wars Challenge

For the second year running, the Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) at UMMC won the Tar Wars Challenge top national award. Each year, the AAFP awards FMIGs who present Tar Wars to the most children and communities.

UMMC learned April 25 that they had won First Prize and $500 for almost 200 presentations to over 2,000 elementary school children in Mississippi from Sept. 1, 2016 to April 1, 2017. The MAFP applauds your great work.

Tar Wars is AAFP's tobacco education program. Each M3 at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine, and each M1 at the  William Carey University School of Medicine, learns about Tar Wars from MAFP staff and gives an anti-tobacco presentation to local schoolchildren as part of their studies.
