IMAGE: micro beam steering solution
March 2015

Micro beam steering was a hot topic at Photonics West last month! We demonstrated our  miniature M3 beam steering modules for precise point-to-point positioning and dynamic movements up to 1K Hz.  Comparable in size to MEMS devices, these modules offer a larger range of motion and accommodate higher-power lasers and larger beam diameters. If you didn't get a chance to see them at the show, check them out below or   email us for more information.
Micro beam steering solutions
Features:
  • Direct-drive piezo motors hold position with zero power and no servo jitter
  • Effects of external vibrations on the mirror position are highly damped
  • Built-in closed loop controllers eliminate the need for external control boards. Connect the modules directly to your system processor over SPI or I2C
  • Low drive voltage and low power use - ideal for portable instruments

Two-mirror beam steering system
The two-mirror M3 module  features two mirrors that rotate independently on orthogonal axes, with motion similar to that of a commercial galvo. It offers the largest range of motion (+/- 40 degrees) with the most compact optical path and mechanical size. This module is currently available by special order to match your exact requirements.  A standard developer's kit is planned for introduction in Q3.  Learn more

Single-mirror beam steering

The single-mirror M3 module has one mirror that rotates around two orthogonal axes ?X and ?Y to create a tilting mirror system without a nested gimbal mechanism. It has the fastest response, the smallest system size and moving mass, and works with convergent and divergent beams. This module is currently available by special order to match your exact requirements.  A standard developer's kit is planned for introduction in Q1-2016. Learn more

IMAGE M3 Risley device
Ultra-compact Risley device
A dual-wedge Risley device has two co-axial wedge-shaped prisms that rotate independently around the optical axis, steering an incident beam over a continuous range of directions. It offers the largest clear aperture - 6 mm diameter in a housing of only 17 mm  diameter   - with  high transmission and opto-mechanical simplicity. It is smaller, uses less power, and we ighs less than a gimbal mirror system. This module is available by special order to match your exact requirements.    Learn more
New rotary micro drive
IMAGE: New Scale's newest rotary micro drive
Rotary micro-drive eliminates jitter
Unlike servo drives, this compact piezo rotary drive system has no measurable jitter. Ultrasonic vibrations of piezoelectric elements drive the motor, which locks into position and holds it even when power is off. In contrast, servo drives use an active control loop to continually seek a target position, resulting in unavoidable jitter and requiring continuous power use. This module is available by special order to match your exact requirements.   Download the data sheet (PDF)
