Drexel Conference Recap

In collaboration with the Drexel School of Economics, we hosted our 3rd Annual Urban Economic Policy Conference  featuring a keynote address by Patrick T. Harker, President and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, as well as two panel discussions on micro and macro aspects of urban economic policy.  Speakers included ESI Presidents Stephen Mullin, and  Richard Voith , as well as Senior Advisor Alan Greenberger.

APA National Conference Recap

ESI's  Community Data Analytics (CDA) team, led by ESI Senior Advisor Sidney Wong, presented in New York City at the 2017 American Planning Association National Planning Conference. The team emphasized that using the latest data that reflects recent trends, and which is specific to local geography, helps avoid estimation biases.

On the Table Philly

On May 23, 2017, ESI hosted a lunchtime roundtable on the role of higher education in communities with participants from Community College of Philadelphia, Drexel University, Temple University, U3 Ventures, University  of Pennsylvania, U niversity of the Arts and West Philadelphia Financial Services. The discussion was part of On the Table , a forum designed to engage area residents and thought leaders in an open dialogue while inspiring solutions that strengthen our local communities.

During the Philadelphia Primary Election, ESI live-tweeted and reported on the results of the election. See the mapped results.

Stephen Mullin was recently quoted in the Philadelphia Business Journal about how The Met could reverse North Broad Street's reputation. He was also quoted on our work for Visit Philly, as Philadelphia broke its visitation record again for the sixth consecutive year.

Philadelphia is the nation's newest hot housing market according to MarketWatch, which referenced ESI's Philadelphia Housing Index and quoted Jonathan Tannen on how the Philadelphia market grew. On a related note, Jonathan also talked about gentrification on Radio Times.
Senior Advisory Board News

 

Catherine Timko and her firm, the Riddle Company, attended the ICSC RECon in Las Vegas on behalf of her clients. Catherine was also quoted in Philly.com on the need for big-box retailers' to form new business models for growth opportunities. 

 

David Boonin wrote Nuclear Subsidies vs. Nuclear Closures - Public Interest vs. the Market for Public Utilities Fortnightly's June 2017 issue.

 

Bernard Markstein was recently quoted in the Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. about the record low national NSA March construction unemployment rate.

 

Sidney Wong spoke to the Lower Merion School District during their Board Meeting in May on several school enrollment forecast reports that still used outmoded data to forecast school-age children. On June 1, Dr. Wong also gave a talk at Smart Growth America in DC on development impacts and latest demographic multipliers.

 

Natalie Nixon gave the keynote address in Austin, TX to the IBM Design Summit on May 18 to their global studio leaders. She shared ideas on what business can learn from the arts, specifically, from the choreographer as systems designer. Dr. Nixon was recently named a Fellow at the Paris d. School and will give a talk at their June annual conference in Paris, France.
