People (myself included) when practicing or playing often watch and comment or critique the shot.  But the reality is we the golfer caused that shot, good or bad to occur.  What we should ask is "Why did it happen"?

After a lengthy discussion(s) with Dr. Mark Erickson (professor Carroll University) it became clear that the" Why" question is so important and forces us to look inward at yourself.

Here is a list of "WHY" questions and my answers.

WHY as we get older do we lose our ability to rotate and lose distance?  As we age flexibility and mobility decrease.  We need to work to maintain both to help maintain our club speed.

WHY am I afraid to hit into the sand/bunker?  Because most people very rarely ever practice from the sand and do not have a sand wedge with proper design specifications.

WHY do I feel I need to grip the club so tight?  Because in most cases the grips on my current clubs are not the proper size or should have been replaced several years ago (too slippery).

WHY when recording my putting do I keep track of the number of putts?  This is probably the least important of all the statistics golfers could track.  A more meaningful number would be if your putt is long or short of the hole.  With that metric you can begin to assess your putting.

WHY don't I have a method of practice that will help me make my practice more meaningful and worthwhile?  Because no one ever taught golfers how to practice.  Based on that most golfers just come out and hit balls with no plan.

WHY, do I keep topping the ball?  Because I stop rotating my upper body thru the shot (or I try to keep my head down too long).  When I stop rotating my arms lose their width or radius and then I top the ball.

WHY don't I go in for a golf fitness evaluation?  I can only guess that most golfers do not feel it is important or worthwhile.  The only way I can respond is to remind you that golf is a sport and to perform at your best your body has to be ready to perform.  I have a referral network of highly trained professionals who can perform your assessment.  Why, don't I ask Paul for a referral? Not sure why you don't.
Please feel free to respond back regarding any of the WHYS.

PLEASE HELP ANDREW...

As many you are aware since May 1st I have been donating a portion of all lessons to a fund for ANDREW WERNICKE.  He was a member of the Brookfield Central (BC) boy's golf team for 2 years.  Since age 11 Andrew has been diagnosed and treated for cancer 4 times.  The cancer has now spread to his spinal column and he is currently being treated in Atlanta for up to 2 months.

Andrew is a great young man who deserves better.  I recently took a donation to his house and he was clearly fatigued from the fight.  Regardless of how he was feeling he was so "Thankful" of the money but his new TaylorMade hat brought a huge smile.  It matched his school colors.

If you are able please write a check to Andrew Wernicke and mail to Paul Mindel P.O. Box 811 Brookfield WI 53008.  I will deliver all donations to his parents.  You may have recently seen on TMJ4 the special graduation ceremony at BC held for him.

Thank you for your support,
Pathway to Excellence,
Paul Mindel
