Dear Friends of Safe Harbor Lab Rescue,

Ahhh, the Dog Days of Summer are almost here! These are days made for mountain hikes, lounging on the deck with our peeps, swims in creeks, a good long toast in the sunshine, having an extra burger on the grill just for us and being treated to Frosty Paws for a cool treat. Speaking of cool, please remember not to leave us in the car no matter how quick you think you'll return. Even with the car windows down and a bowl of water, the temp in the car can quickly shoot up high enough to put us in serious jeopardy in a very short time.

Another way to be cool, stay cool, and help the rescued Labs this summer is to join us poolside for Safe Harbor's LabFest 2017 on  August 26. Check out the details below!

Safe Harbor Lab Rescue's LabFest 2017: Have an Amazingly Good Time AND Help the Labs Too!
Safe Harbor Lab Rescue's Lab Fest 2017 is THE Lab Party of the year and it's coming up on Saturday, August 26 at City Bark in Denver and now, the Labs are ready to take your reservation!   Not only is it the ultimate "Labrador-lollapolooza" of fun, but it's our major annual fundraiser for the rescued Labs medical expenses. They were $160,000 last year. Dogs can swim in the pool and their Humans can visit with other Lab-lovers while they enjoy picnic food provided by Great Range Bison and Meir's Deli.  And don't forget the ever popular and amazing Silent Auction that helps make LabFest a successful fundraiser for the Labs!

"Team George and Gracie": Our Volunteers are the Best!
George and Gracie, 8-year-old brother and sister Labs, lived their whole life outside in a pen in Oklahoma's tornado alley. When their elderly caretaker could no longer care for them, we rescued these two gentle souls. While their physical needs had been met, they only had each other for company and their world was defined by their pen for those 8 years. Everything and everyone in the world beyond was new to them and, as you can imagine, pretty overwhelming.

Enter our three amazing transport volunteers --Denise, Stephanie and Maureen -- who took these two under their wings. Armed with lots of deli turkey and infinite patience, step one was getting them to come out their kennel. Denise, with her background in human psychology and counseling, put her skills (and turkey slices!) to work. It was a moment to celebrate when they came out on their own and were able to join a quiet play group with other dogs. Walking on a leash was new, but Stephanie encouraged them to take a walk around a quiet neighborhood. Maureen was there to support our trainer as they thought about maybe going up a step or two. All three volunteers were there daily to just sit and pet these two until they fell asleep to their loving touch.

When George and Gracie finally went to their foster home in the mountains with Chris and Rod, Denise and Maureen spent most of the day transporting and supporting them as they settled in.
George and Gracie, a shy and gentle pair, have a wonderful life ahead thanks to some very special volunteers:  Denise, Stephanie and Maureen, and foster parents Chris and Rod!

New Beginnings: Malcolm
This is the story of Malcolm, a gorgeous chocolate Lab, who has gone from rags to riches. It was love at first sight for Jodi and Rocky when they met one-and-a-half-year-old Malcolm. After being swept away to his new home, this once timid boy, grew confident through his family's structure and kindness. He learned that the food was tasty, the playtime was endless, and the beds were warm. His forever home had everything he could ever want, but his favorite thing ...is being a part of his own wonderful family.

When we saw Malcolm on the inbound list, we knew that we had to be the first to meet him or someone would snatch him up in a heartbeat.  We were so lucky to meet him first and it was within 10 seconds that we knew that he had to come home with us.  So, after his hour-long freedom ride, Malcolm arrived to his new home and was able to greet the boys after they returned from school.  After a quick discussion at the boarding facility where we met Malcolm, we determined that we were going to keep the name given by SHLR.  He even gets compliments that it's an appropriate name.  After settling in, he's spends his days on long walks looking for rabbits and squirrels, making the walk down to the dog park where he tires himself out trying to steal other dogs' tennis balls, going to baseball practices and games (he still wants to get to a baseball for something to chew on and chase), and trying to get everyone to play rope tug with him (the boys still won't go to that level yet). He's well-mannered and will do just about anything for the homemade dog biscuits Jodi made for him. The taste of baked peanut butter and pumpkin is a huge hit and leaves drool puddles all over the floor until he's earned one.  He managed to tear up the first chew toys in record time so we had to go to something a bit more rigorous for those strong jaws; so, we opted for hard bones filled either with peanut butter or bacon and cheese.  He definitely loves those and will run away with a new bone so he can lick out the filling.  It's an extremely noisy event for us to witness, but when he rolls on his back to get at it or holds it between those huge front paws, we know he's beyond content.
When we adopted Malcolm, he was scrawny and emaciated from his time on his own but we knew that he would fill out nicely and thus far he's gained about 9 lbs to cover up those ribs and joints.  He's made himself quite at home with getting couch privileges on a certain couch and making his way onto our bed (which was a change from our original intention to keep him out of the bed). Of course, he loves jumping in one son's bed to wake him up on those early school mornings. He's still a friendly boy who greets all dogs and enjoys the encounter, maybe except Huskies.  He seems to have a thing against them. But he's made himself at home and we love every minute of having him with us.

Many thanks to CFF for fostering Malcolm!!

Volunteer Spotlight: Linda Toberer
No matter where she lives, Linda is dedicated to helping rescue dogs in need! Linda fostered 18 dogs for a Golden Retriever rescue in Oregon, and Linda writes of the experience "it is amazing how quickly a little love and food turns around dogs that are in dire circumstances." After her retirement, Linda moved from Oregon to Colorado in order to be closer to family.

It didn't take Linda long to miss volunteering following her move to Colorado. Luckily for Safe Harbor, Linda learned about the organization from another Safe Harbor volunteer in her knitting group. Linda now fosters Safe Harbor dogs who need a little extra TLC due to medical conditions or behavioral problems. Her own Golden Retriever, Bodie, helps teach the foster dogs the rules of the house. Linda's fosters have flourished under her care and have demonstrated the true resilience of the breed. One of her foster pups, Sienna, had part of her jaw removed due to an aggressive tumor, and another one of her fosters, Jolie, had a vocal cord paralysis and needed surgery. Both Sienna and Jolie have since found wonderful homes. Linda writes that "I like to foster because each dog is a challenge to figure out and it is very satisfying to see the dogs progress in their behavior and confidence in the world."

Thank you, Linda!
