Congratulations to the colleges and universities that were selected by the members of the Class of 2017! Even in this incredibly competitive admission climate, 83% of our seniors were offered admission to at least one of their top choices and 40% of the class was offered spots at colleges in the most selective category.

After 22 years at Berkeley Carroll, our much-loved Upper School History Chair, Lorne Swarthout, is retiring next month. The BC community is invited to his last World Affairs Breakfast Club, which he founded 16 years ago, on Wednesday, May 31 at 7:30 a.m. at 181 Lincoln Place or on Facebook Live.

BC’S TECH STRATEGY DRAWS INTEREST FROM GOOGLE & THE BROWNING SCHOOL 

Berkeley Carroll hosted visitors from Google who wanted to observe how our teachers and students use Google Classroom and other G Suite apps as part of their everyday teaching. The Browning School also visited to speak with BC’s Technology Department, and learn about our Knowledge Bar, where students can check out technology tools and ask questions about library and tech resources.

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT: TAMMY NGUYEN

Congratulations to Middle and Upper School Visual Arts Teacher Tammy Nguyen whose work has been acquired by MoMA and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.  Aloha-ho-di-ho" is an activity book which presents aspects of the Jazz Age with a backdrop of American imperialism through poems, music, recipes and a timeline.

Ms. Nguyen has also been appointed by the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs as one of 12 delegates for a fact-finding trip to Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Delegates will investigate religion and tolerance while on the trip.

LOWER SCHOOLERS SHOWCASE THEIR 3D ARTWORK

Third graders presented their artwork at their end-of-the-year show, "Movement, Mindfulness & Multiples." The students have been exploring two- and three-dimensional space using a variety of construction methods and materials. They learned how artists use overlapping, size and color to create the illusion of space on a flat surface and how to create a foreground, mid-ground and background. 

An origami installation inspired by artists Tara Donovan, Andy Goldsworthy and El Anatsui is the centerpiece of the exhibit. Each student crafted up to 30 origami sculptures to create the original, three-dimensional structure. Photos

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT: CAROLYN SLOAN

Lower School Music Teacher Carolyn Sloan (far left above), who is currently pursuing a master's degree in education entrepreneurship at the University of Pennsylvania, won a scholarship to the recent ASU GSV Education Innovation Summit in Salt Lake City.

She attended panels on education and teaching techniques and heard from experts such as Arne Duncan, former U.S. secretary of education, Marion Wright Edelman, head of the Children's Defense Fund and a civil rights activist, and representatives from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Ms. Sloan is developing an online education program for kids aged 5-12. Learn more.

8TH GRADERS LEARN ABOUT APARTHEID

Paul Van Zyl, former executive secretary of South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission, spoke to the eighth grade and Mr. Stein's South Africa Under Apartheid class about negotiation theory, justice, human rights and leadership. "You never really have a choice of whether you want to confront the past or not," he said. "You either deal with the past proactively or the past deals with you."

JUNIORS MAKE SCIENCE RESEARCH PRESENTATIONS

Juniors in our Science Research and Design (SRD) program recently reported on their ongoing, independent research. They will present the final results of this research at next year's SRD Symposium. Read a complete list of their topics or view photos.l   

6th GRADE PRESENTS THEIR SOLUTIONS TO WORLD WATER CRISIS

Sixth graders have been working to deepen their understanding of the physics and chemistry of water, as well as their relationship to it. As part of this project-based unit learning unit, students developed solutions to help solve the World Water Crisis, which they presented on Monday. They are also in the process of writing grant proposals for these ideas. Photos.

Second and third graders showed off their musical talents at an assembly last week. They sang and played instruments, highlighting the music of Africa and China. Photos

LOWER SCHOOL TEACHERS ATTEND FOREIGN LANGUAGE FEST

Anna Ramsay, a Associate teachers Andrea Santin, Chelsea English, and Luis Miranda attended the third annual FLES (Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools) Fest at the Dalton School, where they learned about new methods and research on foreign language education.

BC alumni returned to Lincoln Place to reconnect with faculty and friends at our annual Alumni Reunion! Upper School History Chair Lorne Swarthout delivered the evening's keynote address, "A Seat at the Breakfast Club Table," and Lauren Arana '97 received this year's Lion Award. Photos.
