Tampa Bay Times: Cuba ambassador sees hope for closer links 
 
Cuba's first ambassador to the United States in more than 50 years has seen the impact of renewed bilateral ties between the two countries continue to grow over the last two year.

José Ramón Cabañas, the former head of the Cuban Interests Section in Washington, D.C., and one of three main Cuban negotiators to help re-establish ties, shared the changes he's observed with a crowd of about 250 people at St. Petersburg College's downtown campus Saturday.

ABC Action News: St. Pete targets manholes to prevent sewage spills
 
It's a problem costing you millions of dollars and threatening our beautiful waterways. St. Pete has another new fix for it's massive sewer issues.

The city is installing 2,000 rain dishes inside manholes in flood prone areas of St. Petersburg. The dishes will catch rain water and prevent it from getting into the city's sewer system. Crews are also spraying material into the manhole covers to cover cracks that allow rain water and ground water to seep into the sewer system. That was one large, contributing factor to the massive sewage spills we saw during Hurricane Hermine.

he summer storm season is just days away - and the City of St. Petersburg is feeling the pressure when it comes to upgrading their sewage system.

City officials say on a dry day, two-thirds of the water in the sewage pipes is leaks in from ground water.

WUSF: St. Petersburg Repairing 2,000 Manholes To Prevent Sewage Releases  
 
St. Petersburg officials are repairing about 2,000 manholes to make sure the city's sewage system is not overwhelmed during heavy rainfall.

Rainwater has been seeping through the aging concrete that lines the manholes and through gaps in their metal covers.

Tampa Bay Times: New facilities will help St. Petersburg Free Clinic grow 
 
For decades, the bustling St. Petersburg Free Clinic has operated largely out of an old post office building.

That will soon change.

The clinic recently bought two buildings in Pinellas County, said executive director Beth Houghton. One will house its growing health center, which provides free medical services for low-income people who are uninsured. The other will house its expanded food bank.

Tampa Bay Reporter: St. Pete Pier Could Generate $80M a Year, Consultant Says 
 
Revenues from the new Pier could, in the first year, equal or exceed the construction costs, according to a report from Lambert Advisory, a real estate economic consulting service firm hired by the city.

Lambert estimates that the Pier would bring in about $80 million a year in revenues. That's about $14 million more than the $66 million St. Petersburg has currently budgeted to build the structure.

St. Pete Rising: 11-story Apartment Tower to Rise Near St. Pete's EDGE District 
 
A well-respected developer from Michigan has unveiled plans to build an 11-story apartment tower just outside of Downtown St. Pete's trendy EDGE District.  DevMar Development is in the process of assembling 1.9 acres of land located at the corner of 16th Street and 1st Avenue North.  With the exception of a small car wash, a majority of the land has been sitting vacant for over a decade.

Tampa Bay Business Journal: Economic impact study foresees economic win in new St. Pete Pier 

An economic and fiscal impact analysis on the new Pier District in downtown St. Petersburg shows measurable short-term economic benefits are on the way as construction begins next month.

The report conducted by Lambert Advisory for the city of St. Pete, shows the project is also expected to have long-term, recurring economic benefits.

FOX 13: Study: New pier could bring $80 million to St. Pete 

An economic impact study on the new St. Petersburg Pier predicts the attraction will draw $80 million to the city in its first year of operation.

The figure was estimated by Lambert Advisory, a consulting firm hired by the city.

St. Pete officials say the money is based on what residents and tourists will likely spend at restaurants, stores, and hotels once they are drawn to the city by the new pier.

The Weekly Challenger: ACT Educating the Youth 
 
The crowds doubled this year at the Art Conservatory for Teens (ACT) fundraising breakfast. With a mission of educating, empowering and enriching the lives of youth and teens through arts education, it's no wonder so many people showed up to Morean Center for Clay May 4.

ACT is an afterschool magnet performing arts program with sites at the University of South Florida, St. Petersburg, the Enoch Davis Center, Childs Park Recreation Center, John Hopkins and Tyrone Middle Schools. With 280 kids currently enrolled in the program, they are in talks with the Pinellas County School board to add more locations.
