Tampa Bay Times: Big rents and changing tastes drive dives off St. Pete's 600 block
Kendra Marolf was behind the lobby bar of the State Theatre, pouring vodka sodas for a weeknight crowd packed tight for Bishop Briggs, the latest alternative artist to sell out her club.
"We want more of these nights," said Marolf, the State's general manager. "We want less of the nights from 10 or 15 years ago."

I Love the Burg: Site Work to Begin in Mid-June on $1.25 Million Skate Park
A set of delays pushed back the construction of a massive new skate park in St. Pete. Eager skaters and residents won't have to wait too much longer to shred. The final design for the 30,000 SF project will be presented to the public during an open house on June 13, from 7-9pm at Campbell Park.

Tampa Bay Reporter: St. Pete Clears Final Hurdle to Start Construction on the Pier
This city received a permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers today (May 31), which clears the way for construction to begin on the new Pier.
The permit was the final one needed before construction could begin.
"The 'New St. Pete Pier' will be a dynamic extension of our iconic waterfront park system, and is sure to be enjoyed by residents and visitors from throughout the world for generations to come," St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman said. "My thanks to my team, our government partners, and our community for getting us to this point."

10 News: St. Petersburg College picks first woman and first black president in school history
St. Petersburg College has picked a 30-year employee to serve as the seventh president in the school's history.
The Board of Trustees of SPC unanimously selected Tonjua Williams as the college's first woman and first black president.

WUSF: St. Pete Upgrades Should Keep Sewage Out Of Tampa Bay
On a typical spring day, when it hasn't rained in a while, about 7 million gallons of raw sewage flows into St. Petersburg's southwest water treatment plant.
Plant supervisor David Webber says the facility was built to handle 40 million gallons of raw sewage a day.

Tampa Bay Business Journal: St. Pete agrees to $2 million road improvement to accommodate 650 new jobs
St. Petersburg City Council
approved Thursday the design phase of traffic flow improvements in the Carillon Business Park, home to Raymond James (NYSE: RJF) and several other top area employers.
The series of proposed changes are expected to reduce overall traffic delays in the area by 64 percent.

Tampa Bay Times: St. Petersburg's new pier is a go: City Council approves first construction funds
A new pier will finally rise on the downtown waterfront, continuing a tradition that is more than a century old.
The City Council voted 7-1 on Thursday to appropriate $17.6 million to begin construction of the new Pier District. Set to be finished in early 2019, it will replace the 1970s-era inverted pyramid, which itself replaced the 1926 Million Dollar Pier.

Tampa Bay Reporter: Road Improvements Coming to Carillon/Gateway in St. Pete
The St. Petersburg City Council today (June 1) authorized city administration to begin roadway improvements in the Carillon Parkway area.
The road work is designed to relieve congestion and improve drive times for current and future employees and residents.
City staff worked with the Florida Department of Transportation, Raymond James and other stakeholders and partners to study existing conditions and develop a comprehensive traffic mitigation plan that involves improvements to city and state-maintained and operated roadways bordering and within the Carillon Business Park.

Tampa Bay Business Journal: What St. Pete did to keep its only Fortune 200 company
The city has spent two years embroiled in a sewage crisis that Mayor Rick Kriseman once described as a black cloud.
On Thursday, that cloud parted a bit.
The City Council learned that the federal government is no longer investigating the approximately 200 million gallons of sewage St. Petersburg has discharged into local neighborhoods and waterways since August 2015.

During a special meeting held Wednesday morning, the Board of Trustees of St. Petersburg College (SPC) made history in selecting the first woman and African American to be the president of the college.
Dr. Tonjua Williams, Ph.D., was voted in unanimously as the seventh president and beat out other names such as SPC Clearwater Campus Provost Stan Vittetoe and University of South Florida St. Pete College of Arts and Sciences Dean Frank Biafora, Jr.

St. Pete Rising: New St. Pete Pier Moves Forward With Construction Set to Begin this Month
Throughout St. Pete's history, the public pier has always been a waterfront destination. From the "Railroad Pier" to the "Million Dollar Pier" and the famed "Inverted Pyramid", the history of the pier runs nearly as deep as the city's.
The most recent iteration of the St. Pete Pier, the Inverted Pyramid, closed its doors to the public for the last time on May 31, 2013. Since then, there has been a long, often controversial, pier replacement process that involved public forums and information sessions, a dramatic citizen referendum, and of course, a lot of emotion.
