2017 RDGA MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIPS
SCORSE CAPTURES EIGHTH
MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP AT CLIFTON SPRINGS;
HARRIS EARNS SENIOR MATCH PLAY TITLE
Stafford Country Club's Jim Scorse, left, picked up his eighth career RDGA Match Play Championship title on Sunday, May 28 at Clifton Springs Country Club, outlasting his Finals opponent, Adam Condello, center, of Locust Hill Country Club, in a 1-up decision. Stuart Harris, another Locust Hill member, right, won the RDGA Senior Match Play title.
The
RDGA's first major championship of 2017 - the
District Match Play and Senior Match Play competitions - were hosted by Clifton Springs Country Club on May 26 to 28. The competitions each featured single elimination brackets with players seeded from Nos. 1 through 24, based upon points earned from tournaments in 2016 - the RDGA's version of "May Madness."
The two champions left standing by the end of the weekend - Stafford Country Club's Jim Scorse in the Match Play Championship and Stuart Harris of Locust Hill Country Club in the Senior Match Play Championship - arrived at the trophy presentation Sunday taking different paths, with Scorse winning his eighth RDGA Match Play title and Harris earning his first in the Senior Match Play. Both played well when it counted, however, and each survived strong fields to reach the top.
The RDGA wishes to thank
Clifton Springs Country Club
, its members and staff - and particularly the efforts of PGA Head Professional Michael Basch and greens superintendent Keith Kelley - for hosting this year's RDGA Match Play Championships.

CHILDHOOD FRIEND SCOTT MORLEY!

- a childhood friend of Frank Puccia, the Golf Course Superintendent at Irondequoit CC - passed away unexpectedly this past year at age 43 from a rare bacterial infection that affected his heart.
Originally from the Rochester area, Scott relocated to Naples in the mid-1990s. There he met his best friend and wife, Veronica. Together they created a successful life in South Florida and have two beautiful daughters, Coral and Caprice. Scott was a loving husband, caring father and good friend. When he wasn't coaching a soccer games, you could find him watching the Buffalo Bills with his friends and family. He frequently traveled back to his hometown to enjoy the Bills live and in action. His passion for family and his strong values have been instilled in his girls. His family were not prepared to lose him so soon.
We are asking for donations to help Veronica give Coral and Caprice the life they deserve. We are hoping with this fundraiser; we can give the Morley family a little comfort during these trying times.

U.S.OPEN LOCAL QUALIFIER AT OAK HILL
SENDS FOUR TO SECTIONAL QUALIFYING STAGE
Four golfers from the 78-player field in the U.S. Open Local Qualifier Monday at Oak Hill Country Club advanced to the Sectional Qualifying round beginning later this month, including (left to right, above): amateur Adam Condello of Locust Hill Country Club, professional Billy Gaffney from Buffalo, amateur Colin Dubnik of Oak Hill and professional and medalist Chang Won Woo of Canada.
Oak Hill Country Club's
famed
East Course
- the host of so many of golf's major championships through the years, including the
2013 PGA Championship
- proved to be more than up for the challenge of an international field of amateurs and professionals, all attempting to qualify for next month's
U.S. Open
.
On Monday, May 15, a field of 78 golfers competed for four qualifying positions and two alternate spots in the one-day, 18-hole
U.S. Open Local Qualifier
hosted by Oak Hill. Conditions were clear and dry, but cool and windy - which contributed to several high scores on the always-challenging East Course.
Winning medalist honors was
Chang Wan Woo
, a professional golfer
from
Toronto
, Ontario, Canada, who posted a 4-over-par 75. Two
Rochester
-area amateurs -
Adam Condello
of Locust Hill Country Club and
Colin Dubnik
of Oak Hill Country Club - tied for second place, along with
Billy Gaffney
, a former amateur standout from
Buffalo
who has since joined the professional ranks and is playing his way through the mini tour circuits. All three second-place golfers finished at 5-over-par 76.
The top four golfers - Woo, Condello, Dubnik and Gaffney - all qualified to advance to the
Sectional Qualifying Round
of the U.S. Open, which begins on May 22 and concludes on June 5. If they survive those qualifiers, they will advance to the 2017 U.S. Open.
