Debate: Tournament of Champions
The 66th Annual California State Science Fair was the final science event of the academic year for students throughout California in grades 6th through 12th. It was held at the California Science Center in Los Angeles in April. A total of 927 students and 814 projects from 400 schools throughout the state participated. Hitakshi S. and Harishri S. took first place team (and 3rd and 7th place speaker) award at this weekend's Middle School Tournament of Champions Debate Tournament (TOC) at the University of Kentucky. The tournament had 120 students (60 teams) from around the world competing.

While the TOC has been going on for nearly four decades, this is the first time they had a middle school division: Fairmont is the inaugural champion. It also marks the fourth time in four years that a Fairmont North Tustin team took first place at a travel debate tournament.

"Only a life lived for others is worth living." - Albert Einstein

Members of the National Junior Honors Society from the Fairmont North Tustin Campus put action to Albert Einstein's words. On Saturday, May 13, they supported the 13th Annual Destination Independence 5K Walk to benefit their neighbor Blind Children's Learning Center. For more than 55 years, the center has provided specialized education for children who are blind or visually impaired. Fairmont students raised more than $1,000, in addition to jumping in as volunteers at the event.

Faculty Spotlight - Rami Harb
Rami Harb is one of our Fairmont alumni who graduated from college and came right back to become one of our amazing Fairmont teachers. He loved his time as a Fairmont student, especially because he had wonderful teachers who helped him to discover his strengths and hidden talents. He graduated from UC Berkley and completed his credential at Chapman University. Mr. Harb is currently overseeing our library and teaching reading and math to our 5th graders. He loves to come to work in a place where everyone has the same idea of how to support the children. He enjoys making connections with the students that can last a lifetime and, most importantly, helping them figure out their special place in the world. When Mr. Harb is not at work, he enjoys spending his time cooking, reading, and playing tennis!

EPICS Students Give Back

Fairmont Prep students in the Advanced Science and Engineering Program end their year with the capstone class EPICS. EPICS stands for Engineering Projects in Community Service. Purdue University is the founding site and headquarters of the EPICS (Engineering Projects in Community Service) program and promotes the program in high schools around the world. Their mission is for the EPICS K-12 Program to be a leader in developing, disseminating, and supporting service learning models that engage students in engineering and computing-based design projects that meet the needs of their communities.

The motivation behind the EPICS program is to enable pre-college age students to connect engineering and computing design with people and local community needs. In the EPICS program, students work in teams and partner with a non-profit organization. Students design projects to meet the needs of this community partner, enabling them to better serve residents in the local community. Partnerships are key to the EPICS program. The EPICS model involves the reciprocity of benefits of student, community, and mentors. The community partners serve as the customers, corporate and higher education partners serve as mentor to the students offering expertise, and additional partnerships through foundations and philanthropic organizations offer financial and/or material support as needed.

Fairmont Prep's EPICS class had four teams working with Share Our Selves and Habitat for Humanity. They used their knowledge from the ASEP classes they took the past fours years and put it into action. Their projects were not only meaningful to the non-profits but to the volunteers as well. We are very proud of this year's projects and look forward to seeing how next year's EPICS students will help the community.

Re-Enrollment
There are just a few families left who haven't re-enrolled. If you are one of those families, please let Mrs. Jansen know when to expect your child's contract to ensure we have the space for you. Many of our grades are at capacity and our phone is constantly ringing with calls from new families.
