End-Of-Year Thoughts

Dear families,

Thank you for another wonderful year. Our 8th graders have graduated, hallways are empty and classrooms getting ready for our summer school session. While some students are still learning (6th graders will return from their France trip on June 5th), all others are now enjoying their first day of summer break.

I am also thankful for my colleagues and our dedicated AL staff members. It takes a village to make things run smoothly day after day.

Here are a few things in store for us at AL:
  • The Oak construction will start this upcoming Monday, June 5th! Thank you to all for your support in what will change the way our Oak campus looks and will give us more space to better serve our students.
  • Our website is getting a makeover and we will soon be launching our new design. We hope you will like it as much as we do. Thank you to Sarah Guthrie and Angela Michka for the long hours spent working on it.
  • We are reviewing our transportation and lunch policies/costs for the next school year. Please keep an eye out for an email containing additional information.
  • We will continue to work tirelessly on our K-12 expansion plan so we can better serve the Kansas City student community.
Bonnes vacances à tous!

News From Abroad

Dear families,

I am writing from France where our 6th graders are enjoying the family stays and the beautiful sights, sounds and tastes of France. I am always so happy to spend the time with them, to see them interact with the French families, shop keepers and with their fellow travelers. You should be so proud of them (I certainly am) and how responsible and respectful our students are.

Au revoir et à bientôt,

Leslie Houfaidi,
Oak Principal

Field Day Thanks

Thanks to all the parents who helped make Field Day at Cherry such a success. The kids had a wonderful time, and it is always great to see so many volunteers.  We'd like to give a special shout-out to Brande Molina and Alonda Lona for organizing this special day. Kids, teachers, and administration appreciate your hard work.

Have a great summer!

Heather Royce,
Cherry Principal

Oak Construction To Start SoonOakconstruction

construction_hard_hat.jpg Construction will begin  June 5 on the new secure entry addition at the Oak Street campus. The exit from the parking lot will be closed throughout the construction process. This will mean changes in the drop-off and pick-up process.

Because there is only one entrance/exit for the parking lot please use the adjacent streets for drop-off and pick-up.

Drop-off locations:
  • 69th Street: your student can go up the stairs and enter using the northeast door.
  • 69th Terrace: your student can use the Southwest door facing Oak Street. This door is not typically open but it will be during summer school until 8:15. After 8:15 students will need to use the northeast door.
Pick-up locations are identical:
  • Park behind the buses near the stairs on 69th Street.
  • Pick-up along 69th Terrace.
Thank you for your assistance as we begin the final phase of our building project.

AL Recipe Bookrecipebook

Dear  Families,

A month or two ago I became irritated with my lack of new recipes for my family and took to Facebook to see if anyone had some good dinner ideas they were willing to share with me. That quickly morphed into an idea that it might be fun to develop a new PTSO fundraising project, an Académie Lafayette cookbook. I floated the idea to a few friends who are willing to help take on the challenge, but we need your recipe submissions to make this a success!

We are looking for recipes for all types of cuisine, cooking styles, dietary restrictions, and skill levels; our goal is for this to be a reflection of the diversity of the Académie Lafayette community.

If you are willing to share a recipe with us, please include the following information:
  1. A little bit about yourself ("John Doe, parent of Jack (4th grade) and Jill (1st Grade)")
  2. A small blurb about the preparation or the dish itself (for example: "This is our go-to evening meal when we have soccer practice; it's fast and the kids love it." "Leftovers for this dish reheat really well, just pop it in the oven at 350º for 15 minutes")
  3. An estimate of the "skill level" of the dish
  4. Any recommendations you might have for the dish ("Sometimes we like to substitute cranberries in place of raisins")
In an effort to keep every edition unique with minimal duplicate entries, we may not be able to include every submission in this year's edition but we will hold on to these recipes for possible inclusion in future editions of the book! You will be notified by email if your recipe is selected.

Please send your entries to either/or Anne Clark,  clarkworkscustom@gmail.com, or Alexis Cook,  arkjapapa@gmail.com
