Peachjar eFlyers

On  February 1, FVSD began utilizing an electronic flyer distribution system, Peachjar, in an effort to improve communication, ensure a strong link between home and school, and to enhance community support and involvement in our schools. Every school, the District Office, and outside organizations uses Peachjar to distribute district-approved e-flyers to families district wide .  We are excited about the addition of Peachjar and look forward to this means of communication! FACILITIES MASTER PLAN (FMP)

District staff, parents, Trustees, community leaders, and even students have worked together with LPA Architects, Inc. to create a detailed Facilities Master Plan (FMP).  The District's newly developed FMP identifies a vision for the next 10 to 15 years and provides a road map to coordinate short and long-range goals for our school buildings.

As we progress through one of our busiest, and sometimes craziest, months in education, SBAC Testing, Open House, concerts, I am reminded of how precious the time we have together truly is. In just 24 days, we will all be headed off in different directions, reconnecting with family and loved ones, building memories, and enjoying one of the real reasons we all live in Southern California, summer.  I want to take a moment to thank the entire FVSD community for their ongoing commitment to our children.  This is an exceptional place to live, work and go to school and we are honored to be a part of this family!

As always, thank you for everything you do to support teaching and learning in our District.

Kindly,
Mark Johnson, Ed.D.
Superintendent

SPOTLIGHT:  15th Annual District Art Show highlights Visual and Performing Arts in FVSD
Last month, FVSD celebrated something very special: the arts!  Under the direction of VAPA Coordinators Amelia Terich and Brooke James, the 15th Annual District Arts Show was held on April 11th with over 2,000 in attendance.  The Annual District Art Show places a large spotlight on the VAPA programs in our schools, with a strong focus on the visual arts. The event included: the display of hundreds of pieces of student artwork, an awards program, food and dessert trucks, instrumental music from our middle school bands, and hands-on activities for kids.  It was a terrific way to bring our community into our schools.  And we were honored to have a number of residents, including those without children in our schools, join us for the festivities! Ms. Terich and Ms. James are to be commended for organizing and leading this event.  And our site art representatives and Maintenance and Operations staff did a wonderful job preparing and executing the afternoon!
FOCUS: Reading Assessments
As FVSD moves further into our work in literacy at the elementary level, we are proud to share and celebrate the efforts of our teachers!  This year, our TK-5 teachers focused on deepening their understanding of our student's reading ability through the utilization of additional reading assessments by Fountas and Pinnell.  These assessments, ultimately, provide a reading level based on each child's ability to read accurately and comprehend a given text.  With this information, teachers and sites are able to better target their instruction, and provide enhanced interventions and enrichment content.  To learn more about our reading interventions, click here to visit the Fountas and Pinnell website.  Our elementary teachers' dedication to improving student literacy is nothing short of amazing and truly commendable!
UPDATE: Bond Sale
In November 2016, the FVSD community supported the successful passage of Measure O, with 64.2% of the vote.  Measure O authorizes $63 million to repair and modernize our facilities.  Since its passage, the Citizen Bond Oversight Committee (CBOC) has been established, with members appointed by the Board of Trustees in March and May, and the first CBOC meeting held May 9th.  In addition, the District received a coveted Aa2 bond rating from Moody's.  On Tuesday, May 16th, FVSD successfully sold its first series of general obligation bonds in the amount of $21,000,000, through a competitive sale.  With an unheard of eight bids received, the winning bid was submitted by Morgan Stanley with an interest cost of 3.56%. We are excited to report that $20,735,002.69 will be deposited into the building fund sometime in early June.  This is exciting news as we work to change the learning environment for our students and staff!
FOCUS:  Science

After two years of collective research, rich discussion, and support from science coordinators from OCDE, our middle school science team is ready for curriculum development around the new science standards, set to be assessed in the spring of 2019.  These standards, also know as Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), have a deeper emphasis on engineering concepts and engage students in study that integrates traditional life, earth, and space courses.  Throughout the coming years, our middle school science team will collectively build units around these standards, while we also look to revamp our elementary science kits (hands-on activities) to best prepare our students for the new standards.
HIGHLIGHT: Board Honors Students and Parents from Cox and Gisler Schools at April Meeting
The FVSD Board of Trustees had the honor to recognize six outstanding students from Cox and Gisler Schools at the April 13th meeting.  From Cox School, the Board honored: Carter Ankeny (K), Jona Heck (1st), Audrey Dinh (2nd), Chloe Nguyen (3rd), Ethan Kwong (4th), and Jenna Eidum (5th).  From Gisler School, the Board honored: Masen Le (K), Kelli Ma (1st), Gavin Pajaro (2nd), Cole Salazar (3rd), Oscar Martinez (4th), and Hailey Sigmond (5th).  The Board was joined by family, staff and community members in celebrating the amazing accomplishments of these students.

In addition, the Board thanked some outstanding parent volunteers.  From Cox School, the Board recognized and thanked Kelly Lopez and Fernando and Azucena Chavarria.  And from Gisler School, the Board recognized and thanked Sachi Josephson and Helen Platt.
HIGHLIGHT: Monster Concert is a Monster Hit!
In early May, we continued our celebration of the arts with the Monster Concert, comprised of over 350 elementary and middle school students and more than 300 high school students performing at Fountain Valley High School.  The popularity of this event necessitates two performances, both to packed houses with more than 2,000 attendees including staff, parents and community members. Our middle school Music Directors, Mrs. Cooley, Mr. Lamantia and Mr. Covacevich, once again, are to be commended for the orchestration of an amazing Monster Concert.  Moreover, we want to thank Mr. Irons and Mr. Matthews from Fountain Valley High School for their continued support of our programs!
TAG IT!: #myFVSDImpact
