The Michigan Osteopathic Association's (MOA) 118th Annual Spring Scientific Convention was a success on several levels. This year's number of attendees exceeded 2016's convention. The Science Research Exhibit (SRE) competition saw a record number of submissions. The new venue, the Westin Southfield-Detroit, proved to be a perfect location to handle the record number of speakers and sessions.

The MOA launches Physicians' Organization: DOs Together
The 118th Annual Spring Scientific Convention provided a platform for the announcement of
DOs Together
, a physician's organization dedicated to empowering independent practices. The Michigan Osteopathic Association (MOA) has been developing a physician's organization that would be another resource for MOA members.
DOs Together will give members direct access to a network of experts providing guidance on issues affecting quality of care, patient access, and medical reimbursement. As a member benefit, DOs Together will provide services that can cut through bureaucracy, get answers, save time and minimize lost revenue.
DOs Together will provide:
- Infrastructure and technology support, including EHR and telehealth, to develop and sustain high performing, independent practices focused on patient health and wellness
- A voice of leadership and support in the broader healthcare community, liaising with payors, health systems and policy makers
- In office, multi-disciplinary clinical care teams that follow an advanced primary care approach to treat chronic conditions and teach self-management skills
- Outcomes data and quality improvement strategies, including a focus on population health
- An open system with no mandated health system affiliations - you choose the health system that best fits your patients' needs

Michigan Osteopathic Political Action Committee
The Michigan Osteopathic Political Action Committee (MOPAC) reached its goal of $18,000 in donations over the 4 days of the 118th Annual Spring Scientific Convention. With so many issues facing health care, helping candidates who can best represent physicians, residents, interns and medical students has never been more urgent. MOPAC fights to elect and re-elect pro-physician candidates through direct contributions, voter education and targeted political activism. Anthony Ognjan, DO, and Kevin McKinney spoke during the House of Delegates, impressing upon the delegates the need to support those who support DO's.
Dr. Ognjan would like to remind MOA members that MOPAC's goal for donations in the 2017-18 election cycle is $125,000 and that donations do not stop with the convention efforts. "Invest in your profession! It is not only needed, it's the right thing to do!"

2018 Election Observations from Kevin McKinney
All statewide elective offices- Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State are open due to term limits. Both the House of Representatives and Senate have seats in play. The Senate has 26 out of 38 Senate seats open due to term limits, 19 of the of those those seats belonging to Republicans. A number of House members will be eyeing the upper chamber providing more changes in the House, as well as the face a number of termed out open seats. Depending on the caliber of the candidates, the filings will provide for some interesting races and match ups.
We also want to make sure our two physicians serving in the legislature, Dr. Edward "Ned" Canfield from the 84th District and Dr. John Bizon in the 62nd, return to their respective seats in the House of Representatives. Our PAC fundraising goal is ambitious but the need for MOPAC to be a relevant participant in the upcoming elections to assist in getting targeted candidates elected is an absolute necessity.

Record number of submissions for Scientific Research Exhibit
The Michigan Osteopathic Association's (MOA) 118th Annual Spring Scientific Convention once again featured a Scientific Research Exhibit (SRE) competition. With over 80 submissions, the event continues to grow each year.
The SRE competitions provide osteopathic medical students, residents, fellows and attending level physicians an opportunity to present their medical and scientific research to our profession. The SRE event demonstrates the very best of what osteopathic medicine is and reaffirms the profession's commitment to the advancement of science in osteopathic medicine.
Lawrence Abramson, DO, MPH, has volunteered as a judge for over 10 years. "The type of work we are seeing is extraordinary. Every year I have seen an increase in the quality and content," said Dr. Abramson.
The next SRE competition will be held at the MOA Autumn Scientific Convention, November 4, 2017 at the Amway Grand Plaza in Grand Rapids.

MOPAC Head Shot Photo Booth
The MOPAC booth offered professional head shots for physicians, residents, interns and students. Donations to MOPAC were encouraged as MOA members were able to get professional quality head shots done for use in resumes, web listings and articles for both print and website. The effort was a success as MOPAC "veterans" and newcomers took part in the new service.

Rep. Canfield Works to eliminate Maintenance of Certification
Representative Edward "Ned" Canfield, DO, has introduced 2 bills, House Bill 4134 and House Bill 4135, to eliminate what many consider to be an unfair burden on trained physicians and to ensure healthcare is more accessible for patients. MOC requirements seem redundant as physicians are already required by Michigan law to complete 150 hours of continuing medical education credits as a condition of relicensure every three years. On May 24, the House Committee on Health Policy held a hearing where healthcare providers and medical associations testified on just why these requirements are designed to benefit certification boards.

For the Michigan Osteopathic Association (MOA) Bruce Wolf, DO, FACOR, testified. "The rules of MOC are constantly in a state of flux. Changes are continuously being made. This makes it extremely difficult for physicians to know what rules to follow," said Dr. Wolf.
The MOA and the Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) are working together to advocate on behalf of HB 4134 and HB 4135 and to offer details to the general public on the urgency of this issue in regards to access to health care. Many physicians have come forward to offer their story on how MOC requirements are hurting their ability to treat patients. Some doctors are near retirement and would rather retire than submit to further costs and time to be re-certified. Some are doctors who would rather practice in a state that does not require MOC.

Women of Excellence Award Presented to Dr. Carol Monson
The second annual Women of Excellence award was presented to Carol L. Monson, DO,MS FACOFP, FAAFP, at the 2017 Women of Excellence Reception. The reception was first held in 2016 with the purpose of honoring a female osteopathic physician who has provided exemplary leadership in the field of medicine.
Dr. Monson currently serves as a Senior advisor to Dean Strampel at the Michigan State College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM). Dr. Monson received her DO degree at MSUCOM after earning a Masters Degree in Community Mental Health at Northern Illinois University. Dr. Monson did her postgraduate training at Lansing General and Ingham Medical Hospitals in Lansing Michigan. Serving as MOA President from 2002-2003, Dr. Monson was only the second female MOA president, and the first since 1925.
With years of mentorship and leadership, Dr Monson has broken glass ceilings and paved the way for other female physicians. Over her career Dr. Monson has consistently risen to leadership positions and offered her experience in mentoring others from medical students to young physicians.
Women of Excellence chair, Dr. Emily Hurst presented the award. "It was an amazing honor to present the award to Dr. Monson," said Dr. Hurst. "She was the first physician female leader I saw when I came to the MOA and she has been a mentor ever since."

The "Doctors That DO" campaign was a tremendous success as the branding campaign from the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) was seen in magazines, TV, billboards and more. A great component of the effort was all of the physicians in the campaign were
real
doctors. This provided a visual to the mosaic of DOs that serve our communities.
The next phase of the campaign will have a new line-up of DO's and the AOA is having a nomination process. If you know a DO who would be great to represent one of the "Doctors That DO," send them the link to the contest. The MOA would like to thank the AOA for this tremendous effort to promote osteopathic physicians and we look forward to seeing the next phase of "Doctors That DO."

2017 MDHHS Adult Immunization Summit
Find out what's new in adult immunizations!
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Division of Immunization has a rich tradition of providing immunization conferences to providers in Michigan and is pleased to offer a conference focused on essential adult immunization topics. The primary goal of this summit is to update health care providers on immunization issues and best practices that impact adults. This one-day conference will provide participants with a variety of practice-management tools, techniques and information that will help assure that all of their patients are fully immunized.
The conferences are appropriate for nurses, nurse practitioners, medical assistants, public health staff, pharmacists, physicians, physician assistants, medical and nursing students, and anyone interested in learning more about current immunization practices in Michigan.
While the conference is intended for all immunizing providers representing diverse health care settings, physicians' offices, in particular, may benefit from this immunization update and networking opportunity.
However, everyone is welcome to attend this conference, and health care professionals from a variety of settings will find this training opportunity beneficial.
The registration fee for conference attendees is $50 per person and lunch will be included.

Human Trafficking Addressed at Osteopathic Summer Symposium
Alan Janssen, DO, an associate professor of osteopathic medical specialties in the College of Osteopathic Medicine will discuss the important issue of human trafficking during the college's Summer Symposium, June 23-25 in Traverse City. It's the first time the topic has been addressed during a continuing medical education program and looks to help physicians recognize human trafficking victims.

Spinraza: The first ever therapy for Spinal Muscular Atrophy
Late last year, the FDA approved Spinraza, the first ever therapy for Spinal Muscular Atrophy, the leading genetic cause of death in infants. So far the drug is slow to market. Across the country, there are approximately two or three hundred people being treated in 243 states. In Michigan there is only one patient currently on the drug - Detroit Channel 7 anchor Stephen Clark's 4-year-old granddaughter Scarlet.
