NEW PL & SPL HANDBOOKS
There's a new Patrol Leader Handbook and Senior Patrol Leader Handbook

The leadership lessons learned in Scouting aren't taught in schools, but you can find them in a book.

That is, provided that book is the Patrol Leader
Handbook or Senior Patrol Leader Handbook.

These essential guides for Boy Scout leaders have been updated for 2017. They include ready-to-use tips to help Boy Scouts become effective leaders at troop meetings and on the trail.

Pick up a copy at your local Scout Shop or at  ScoutStuff.org.

Judge these books by their covers, and you'll see designs that've been freshened to match the 13th edition of the  Boy Scout Handbookreleased in 2016.

But what's inside really counts.

NATIONAL YOUTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING

Got New Troop Leadership? Send them to NYLT!

Leaders, has your unit held Leadership elections for next year's Senior Patrol Leaders, Assistant Senior Patrol Leaders or Crew President yet?Are your youth prepared for the roles their peers elected them for?

Do you want to help them succeed? If the answers is Yes, NNJC has a program geared to helping all youth leaders become successful in their roles leading their units.

National Youth Leadership Training is a National Training Course that Northern New Jersey Council offers to our Boy Scout and Venturing Youth to help them learn and develop the planning and leadership skills to run their Patrol, Troop or Crew more effectively.

During the week long course, our future youth leaders are placed into a Patrol where they will work as a team in discovering new skills, problem solving methods, working within a team and most of all having fun while doing this!   The course is held in a "Model Troop" setting so the participants learn more about the mechanics of a troop or crew and will be able to bring back the knowledge and skills on how to run more effective PLC and troop meetings thereby taking your units program to the next level.

For 2017, the course will be held at Camp Turrell from August 13 th to the 19 th and the cost is $335 per Scout until June 30 th .   After that the price jumps to $360, so take advantage now before the price increases!

There are only 120 slots available for the course and they are filling up fast, so sign up now so your Troop's Youth Leaders don't miss out on an experience of a lifetime!

POWDERHORN TRAINING
Powder Horn is a resource course designed to introduce Scouting's adults and youth to the exciting program possibilities for their unit. The course supports the mission of strengthening units so they can achieve the mission of the Boy Scouts of America. One common denominator of successful courses is that creativity and variety play a role in the delivery of the curriculum. Each course is somewhat different, and that is a good thing. Some courses have had participants arrive by canoe, horseback, on bike, or even on skis. Creativity is fun, too! The ultimate goal is for the participants to leave the Powder Horn course with a list of ideas to help their program, along with the contacts and resources needed to implement them. This will lead to a more robust program, which in turn should lead to increased membership and a higher retention rate in our units.

CUB SCOUT LEADER ONLINE TRAINING
Key Cub Scout Leader training via my.Scouting

The Cub Scout leader curriculum has recently been updated! Reached via the  my.Scouting.org portal, these training modules have been broken down into 2-10 minute segments to make pausing them easier! Don't be intimidated by the number of segments, they're all very short and designed to make the most of your available time!

Training is currently available for the following Cub Scout positions: Cubmaster, Asst. Cubmaster, Den Leader, and Pack Committee Member.

Each learning path is broken into three specific modules:  "Prior to the first meeting," "The first 30-days," and "Position Trained." This decision was made to ensure that as you become trained in your new position, you build confidence and experience without being overwhelmed with information you wont be able to fully utilize yet!
E-LEARNING VIA MY.SCOUTING
My.Scouting.org  is transitioning to become the one place volunteers can go for volunteer resources.

Now, e-Learning training courses can be taken online at my.Scouting.org. Leaders can complete any of the courses found in their My Dashboard under the Home menu list. When My Dashboard is selected, it displays the My Training page with four new tabs to select:
  • YPT - Displays the Youth Protection training courses available. To make it easier for new volunteers, the system defaults to the YPT tab.
  • Training Center - Displays the Scouting programs (Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Venturing and Varsity, and Other) containing training courses applicable to the specific program. Those under "Other" contain courses related to Health and Safety and district-level training.
  • Requirements - Displays training courses that are required to be completed to become position-trained for current registered position(s). Courses that are not offered online will show "Classroom Training." Please consult your council's website for scheduled classroom trainings.
  • Completions - Displays training courses that were completed. It also allows the ability to print a certificate for a completed course.
