Notes from Ms. Dahnke
Are you Looking Forward?
Philippians 3:13-14 says, "Brothers, [and sisters], I do not consider myself yet
to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and
straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for
which God has called me Heavenward in Christ Jesus."
So...summer vacation is only a week away from becoming a reality. We see all the students cheering but also the teachers' smiles cover most of their faces. We all look forward to summer vacation and a bit more of a relaxed schedule if a schedule at all. Summer typically means beaches, sand, walking barefoot, swimming, and hanging out with friends and family.
Needless to say, summer means more camping for some. I am fairly certain that most of you have taken a hike at night in unfamiliar territory. Did you ever notice that it never benefits you to look behind you when you are trying to avoid roots, tree branches, stumps, logs, and even snakes if you are unfortunate enough to wander around one of those? If it is dark, you have to use your flashlight to guide you and show you the path. If it is still light outside, you have to really strain in the thick of the woods to make sure that you see all the obstacles that may be ahead of you on the path. In other words, you need to constantly look ahead, not behind, or you might get hurt or even fall off a cliff depending on where the hike takes place.
A car is driven in forward motion. It is more difficult to maneuver a car when you are in reverse than it is to drive straight forward. For those of you who have ever had to back up a truck with a trailer behind it, you have even a better idea of how tricky that can be. It is definitely much easier to drive forward.
I think you can tell where this is going by now. In life, there are always going to be those times where we look behind and think about how things could have gone differently and how we may have messed up. That can be very healthy. We need to look behind to see where we can correct our mistakes or do something better the next time. The past is known and we already know how that turned out. The future can be scary and unpredictable. As Christians, looking forward requires that we trust that God is in control and have faith that He will see us through the hard times.
I believe that when God made us, He designed us so that we have to look forward. As a matter of fact, look around at the people sitting nearby. Their eyes are focused forward on their faces; their feet point forward when they walk; their noses are on the front of their faces and their ears are designed to be able to hear more of the noise ahead of them than the noise behind them. Not only does God demonstrate the concept of looking ahead on our bodies, God has also given us the Bible so that we can look forward at those things that await us in glory if we have given our hearts and our lives to Him.
Summer is coming but so is another school year. What plans are you looking forward to in the next couple of months? Trust that God has a plan in place for you and then allow Him to guide you to that plan so that you are looking forward and not dwelling on what is behind you.
Enjoy the summer! Look forward to the fun that you will have and those short-term plans that you have made, but don't forget to look ahead to the bigger picture and long-term plans that God has made for you. "Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you"
(Proverbs 4:25). Instead of living in the shadows of yesterday, walk in the light of today and the hope of tomorrow.

Thank You
Thank you to all the parents, students and PTL who were so kind and thoughtful during Teacher Appreciation Week. We all felt very appreciated with all of the gifts, cards, food, etc. What a blessing to be blessed!
Summer Office Hours
Summer office hours have been set for BCA (CCC will be open regular hours - 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and can be reached at 423-987-8774).
Below are the office hours for the summer. However, phone messages and emails are checked, often.

Regular School Office Hours
Family Work Day
Weather permitting, June 24 will be a work day at BCA. We will be painting sidewalk games for students, fixing up the basketball area, and adding a few touches to the playground area as well as some other touch-up maintenance and painting and more landscape work.
Lunch and snacks will be provided and volunteer hours will be given. Come with your families and help us get ready for the new school year and the August 26 reunion. We will begin at 8 a.m. Come when you can!

Chapel
Everyone is welcome to join us for our Closing Chapel Service on Fri., May 26 at 8:30 a.m. Pastor Busher will be leading this service. The end-of-year certificates will be presented at this service. Following Chapel, students will return to their homeroom and may be dismissed at that time. Chapel Dress Code is required as we have had on all of our chapel days. Report cards will be sent via InfoDirect on Friday, May 26.
Our 4th quarter chapel offerings will go to Bridge City Community. Bridge City, an outreach of First Lutheran Church, continues the legacy of bringing the Gospel to people in need.

For PK4 and under - families do not furnish supplies for their child. They pay a $35 supply fee twice per year in August and February.

Upcoming Events
End of School Year Prayers & Blessing at First Lutheran Church
On Sun., May 21 at both of the 8:30 & 11 a.m. services, all students, graduates, teachers and staff are invited to attend worship at First Lutheran Church, 2800 McCallie Ave., for recognition and to be blessed with prayers. We thank the Lord for their past school year and pray for a safe, peaceful summer for all. All are welcome to attend!
PK4 Graduation - May 23
Our Pre-K4-year-olds will graduate on Tues., May 23 at 9 a.m. in the BCA gym. Please join us as we congratulate them as they journey to Kindergarten. All PK4 students will continue with their current class through Fri., May 26.
Summer Camp is available through Angela's Angels and Athletes beginning May 30 and goes through Aug. 11.
Non-Dress Code - May 24
We will have a non-dress code day for those students not on field trips. Students in K - 3rd going on a field trip must wear their BCA field trip t-shirts.
8th Grade Graduation - May 24
Everyone is invited to attend the 8th grade Commencement at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on Wed., May 24 at 7 p.m.
Field & Fun Day - May 25

Basketball Camp - June 5 -9
Mr. Streufert, BCA Athletic Director, will host a basketball camp for rising 3rd - 8th graders from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m., June 5 - 9, 2017.
The cost is $60 per child and the fee includes a t-shirt and basketball.
There will be many contests each day, such as shooting for basketball cards, hot-shot contest and free throws, as well as contests based on skills. At the end of the week, one athlete will be named "Outstanding Camper of the Week". For more information please contact Mr. Streufert at the school or [email protected].

Orders are now being taken for the BCA 2016-2017 yearbook! Deadline to order is May 26, 2017.
Photos will include student activities from Infants - 8th grade
featuring class events, sports photos, school dances,
National Lutheran Schools Weeks activities, field trips,
Fun & Field Day, chapel, mini-courses and much more!
Please make checks payable to BCA, with "Yearbook" in the memo line and return the
FORM, along with payment, to your child's teacher or Melissa Swafford by 5/26/17. Books will be available for pick-up on
Registration Day, Aug. 9, 2017. Forms may also be picked up the front lobby of the school.

End-of-Year Procedures for K - 8th grade/Blended Learning students
News from the Business Office
Attention: All Parents of K - 8th graders - All balances must be paid in full by Fri., May 19. Outstanding balances may include tuition, day care, lost or damaged textbooks, lunch charges or library books. Please call Mrs. Audra Cardillo at 622-3755, ext. 13 if you have any questions. Report cards will be held if you have an outstanding balance. (Also, be sure to pay any cafeteria charges that are unpaid at this point.)
Extended/Day care charges for K - 8th graders through Tues., May 23 will be available on Wed., May 24. Day care for May 24 through May 26 will be on a pre-paid basis for those who do not have a day care contract. Day care for Kindergarten through 8th/Blended Learning will be $5 per day for Wed., May 24 and Thurs., May 25. Day care will be the $15 per day rate for Fri., May 26.
Final Chapel/End-of-Year Awards
Chapel and end-of-year awards will be held at 8:30 a.m. on Fri., May 26. Dismissal will be approximately 10 a.m. on Fri., May 26 which is the last day of school. Report cards will be sent home via InfoDirect after the closing chapel service. Chapel dress code is required as we have had on all of our chapel days.
For K - 8th students - If your K - 8th grader needs Day Care following the closing chapel service, you must sign up with Melissa Swafford before Wed., May 24. You will need to bring a sack lunch and drink for Day Care on May 26. You may reach Melissa at 423-987-8774. Thanks for your cooperation.
