Wilma Mankiller Documentary to Premiere at the 2017 LA Film Festival
May 9, Los Angeles- The documentary team of Gale Anne Hurd and Valerie Red-Horse Mohl are bringing their third and most powerful Native American narrative to the big screen.  MANKILLER examines the legacy of the formidable Wilma Mankiller, who defied all odds to become one of the most influential and successful leaders in the United States.

Although Wilma Mankiller considered herself a liberal Democrat, she was nonetheless chosen to run for Deputy Chief of the Cherokee Nation by a conservative Republican.  Together they led their Nation in a bi-partisan partnership that is sadly missing in today's political landscape.  Her leadership style and achievements are even more remarkable in retrospect, given our country's current divide over issues like the environment and health care.  With bigotry and sexism on the rise, the new feature documentary, MANKILLER, serves as both a wake-up call and a beacon of hope for the future.

A stalwart activist for women's rights, Wilma Mankiller was cited by the organizers of the January 2017 Women's March on Washington as one of the most important leaders in America's movement for equality.  As a young girl, Wilma's family was relocated from the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma to San Francisco.  Although the move was traumatic, it was in the Bay Area during the turbulent 1960s that she became involved in the fight for civil rights and joined the Alcatraz Occupation. Wilma brought this passion and organizing expertise with her when she returned to the Cherokee Nation. Although she faced rampant sexism, she served three terms as the Cherokee Nation's Principal Chief, winning 80% of the votes in her final election.  Wilma Mankiller laid the foundation for the Nation's current economic and socio-cultural status as one of America's most successful tribes.

“I was immediately drawn to Wilma's powerful story. On both a personal and political level, her legacy is more relevant now than ever”, said Executive Producer Gale Anne Hurd. “This film and Wilma’s life serve as a powerful lesson in the art of the possible.  As she herself said ‘The secret of our success is that we never, never give up’.”

MANKILLER reunites the accomplished documentary team of Gale Anne Hurd (The Walking Dead, The Terminator trilogy) as Executive Producer and Valerie Red-Horse Mohl (Naturally Native) as Director/Producer. Kristina Kiehl (The Cherokee Word for Water) and Charlie Soap, Wilma’s widower, also serve as Producers.  Felicia and Gina Olaya (Wilma’s daughters) join the production team as Co-Producers. The filmmakers’ close ties to Wilma and the Cherokee Nation allowed for unique access that includes interviews with colleagues, friends, family, celebrities and government leaders.

The world premiere screening of MANKILLER will take place as part of the LA Film Festival on Monday June 19th at the ArcLight Culver City at 6:15 pm (9500 Culver Blvd. Culver City, CA 90232). Press screenings will be available to all Festival accredited members of the press, so be sure to apply by May 16th.

The Producers of MANKILLER, as well as members of Wilma’s family, will attend the premiere. A Q&A will take place immediately following the screening.

Individual tickets will go on sale to Film Independent Members on May 16th and to the General Public on May 23rd. You can follow this link to purchase - https://tickets.lafilmfestival.com/Online/

Monday, June 19, 6:15PM, ArcLight Cinemas, Culver City - 9500 Culver Blvd, Culver City, CA 90232.  A Q&A with the filmmakers (as well as Wilma's family) immediately following the screening.
