Joumana Silyan-Saba
2017 Outstanding Citizen Diplomat

Joumana Silyan-Saba uses her extensive experience with conflict mitigation in her role as the first Director of Strategies against Violent Extremism in the Los Angeles Mayor's Office of Public Safety. In leading the city's intervention and prevention efforts for ideologically motivated violence, she takes an innovative approach to support community-led processes that promote inclusiveness to reduce hate and bias.

Previously as Senior Policy Analyst for the City of Los Angeles Human Relations Commission she worked with local, state and federal agencies, garnering national attention for her efforts in preventing violence and improving inter-community relations. Under her leadership, Los Angeles was selected by the Obama Administration as a model city for their framework on Countering Violent Extremism.

In 2015 she was invited to the White House to brief Vice President Joe Biden on the topic. In addition she has participated in numerous advisory briefings and panel discussions nationally and internationally, including speaking engagements alongside presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.

Joumana generously gives of her time to share her expertise and ideas with our international visitors working to combat violent extremism in their countries. IVCLA is honored to recognize Joumana Silyan-Saba as our 2017 Outstanding Citizen Diplomat.

Youth Mentoring Connection
2017 Outstanding Resource

A Los Angeles where young people are truly seen and not just watched, where society understands and accepts its responsibility in meeting the needs of all young people, and where young people bring their gifts back into their communities as productive members of society is the vision of Youth Mentoring Connection (YMC).

By matching at-risk youth with caring adult mentors and placing that "match" within a structured group setting, YMC awakens these youth to their power and purpose, helping them reach a productive adulthood.

YMC was founded in 2001 by Tony LoRe, a successful businessman, who sold his business to address his life's passion of working with young people. He now dedicates his life to connecting youth with mentors in their community. YMC's first worksite partner was HBO, and over the years has remained one of their most dedicated alliances. From the beginning HBO was focused on serving communities in greatest need, and today students from local high schools continue to meet twice a month with their HBO mentors for group sessions and one-on-one activities.

YMC is eager and open to share their work to empower at-risk youth and awaken society to the needs, promise and value of this overlooked population. They often take the time to meet with civic leaders and heads of organizations from all over the globe who are participating in IVCLA programs. For their dedication to improving the Los Angeles community and the world through citizen diplomacy, we are honored to present YMC with IVCLA's 2017 Outstanding Resource Award.
