Permit Free Garage Sale Weekend - In order to assist Westland residents with their spring cleaning and make a little extra money at the same time, the City of Westland is offering a permit free garage sale weekend on May 12 and 13.  Residents can host a garage sale and avoid the normal $12 permit fee.  You can visit www.cityofwestland.com to see where all the great sales are happening around the city.  


19th Annual North Brothers 5K Fun Run -  Saturday, May 13 is the date for the 19th Annual North Brothers 5k Fun Run.  There is still time to register for this great event that raises money for the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute.  Racers will gather at the Farmers & Artisans Marketplace Pavilion for a 9:00 a.m. start to the race.  If you are interested in registering, please call Ashley Duff at North Brothers Ford at 734-524-1258.

Stamp Out Hunger -  On  Saturday, May 13  the Letter Carrier's food drive celebrates its 25th year.  You can help by putting your non-perishable donation by your mailbox and the United States Postal Service will pick it up and deliver it to a local food bank, benefiting those in need within our community.


Saturday in the Park -   Wayne County Parks' Saturday in the Park program has returned. Each Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., visitors can walk, run, skate or cycle safely along six miles of Hines Drive. Hines Drive will be shut down to vehicular traffic from Ann Arbor Trail to Outer Drive so that guests have the opportunity to participate in their favorite activities in a vehicle-free environment. The Saturday in the Park program will take continue every Saturday through September 30. All ages are encouraged to participate.  Parking is available at the Hines Park-Helms Haven Area (Hines Drive, west of Outer Drive) and Hines Park-Nankin Mills Picnic Area (Hines Drive, east of Ann Arbor Trail).  For more information about Saturday in the Park or any other Wayne County Parks program, please call (734) 261-1990.

Mom's Golf Free - Don't forget, Mother's Day is Sunday, May 14!  If the special woman in your life is a golfer, you should make plans to visit the Westland Municipal Golf Course on Saturday, May 13 or Sunday, May 14 when Mom's golf for free!  With one paid round of 9-holes and a cart, Mom can come along and golf at no charge.  The golf course is located at 500 S. Merriman Rd. 


Scheduled Upcoming Civic Meetings - Residents are invited to attend the upcoming City meetings.  Below is a list of the meetings with their date, time and location:


City Council
  • The Westland City Council  will meet for a study session to discuss the upcoming fiscal year budget on Monday, May 15 at 5:30 p.m. at Westland City Hall
  • The Westland City Council meeting will take place Monday, May 15 at 7:00 p.m. at Westland City Hall 
Housing Commission
  • The Housing Commission will meet on Tuesday, May 16 at 5:30 p.m. at Jefferson Barns Community Vitality Center.
Zoning Board of Appeals
  • The ZBA meeting will take place on Wednesday, May 17 at 5:30 p.m. at Westland City Hall
Wild About Youth Works! Kickoff - For the 7th year, Mayor Wild is inviting youth ages 16-18 to participate in his Wild About Youth Works! program. Participants will receive financial literacy training through the City's partnership in the program with Fifth Third Bank, attend a "dress for success" and interview workshop event as well as an informative session on starting your own business.  Students who complete the program will be given a list of available jobs in the area.  The event will begin take place on Wednesday, May 17 at 6:00 p.m. in the Grande Ballroom of Westland City Hall, located at 36300 Warren Rd.

Free Bulk Item Drop Off Day - In order to help residents avoid the fees associated with bulk or special trash pick-up, the City of Westland is offering a FREE Bulk Drop Off event. Simply bring your items to the DPS Yard on Saturday, May 20 along with proof of residence, to dispose of old unwanted items that don't fit in your regular black curbside trash bin.  The DPS Yard is located at 37137 Marquette.  If any residents needs assistance to participate in this program because of age or a physical disability, please call the Mayor's Office at 734-467-3200 in order to make other arrangements. This is a residential program. No commercial building materials will be accepted.
