At the turn of the century, Miami residents voted to allow development on Watson Island. Fifteen years later, that development hasn’t happened and our needs have changed. I believe that the developer has missed contractual deadlines and has not acted as a good faith partner to the city. In a special meeting of the Commission next week, I will ask the City to enforce the contract, place them in default, and take back the land.
This is no small task, but it is the right thing to do. Then we can ask the voters of this generation if they would prefer a park that faces downtown or a transit hub where any development helps pay for and implement the Baylink to Miami Beach.
Miami Today wrote an article on the subject and my decision. I welcome support for this action. The Special Commission Meeting regarding Flagstone Development at Watson Island will be held Tuesday, May 30, 10:00 a.m. at City Hall (3500 Pan American Drive, Miami, Fl 33133.)
Your Commissioner,
