Greetings Eagle Chapter Members and Friends!

Saturday, I will join law enforcement professionals and their supporters on the mall of the US Capitol in Washington DC to recognize our police heroes who have made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting our communities at the 29th Annual Candlelight Vigil.  Early this week, I visited the memorial to make our annual wreath laying in recognition of our 20 US Air Force Air Police, Security Police and Security Force members whose names have been inscribed on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.  Please see below.
Eagle Chapter's Wreath with flags at National LE Officers Memorial Washington DC
If you aren't planning to attend the Candlelight Vigil in person, the National LE Officers Memorial Fund has made it possible to watch the vigil over the web.  Please click on this link.
This year our remembrance of our fallen who are inscribed on the memorial is very different.  Please see the enhancements that we made in the article below.
May is THE most busiest year in our annual calendar of events. After Police Week, Memorial Day is just around the corner where three activities are taking place. More to come about those.
First week in June, Eagle Chapter starts celebrating the 20th anniversary of our Air Force Security Forces.  Please come join us with Colonel Erik Rundquist at Langley on June 5.  Please see details below.
     Thank-you for your continuing support.

Very respectfully,

Lee

Colonel Rundquist - Air Combat Command's Top Cop to Speak at Eagle Chapter's First 20th Anniversary Security Forces Celebration - at Joint Base Langley Eustis
Col Erik K Rundquist Please join us in our first Eagle Chapter 20th Anniversary Celebration of our Air Force Security Forces June 5 at 11:30AM. We are honored to have as our keynote speaker, Colonel Erik K. Rundquist. Colonel Rundquist is the Chief of Security Forces Headquarters Air Combat Command. Air Combat Command's Security Forces include 4,500 Defenders serving in 2 Groups and 16 Squadrons.

Due to the renovation of the Langley Club, we're holding our luncheon celebration at the club's temporary operating location the Bayview Commonwealth Center located at 350 Clarke Ave Hampton Virginia 23665.  Click here to obtain a map to the location.

We have two great SF "stars" who are helping us with organizing at Langley,  Technical Sergeant Jared Martin and Technical Sergeant Alexis Rice. Our thanks to them, plus Rachel Vis, for stepping up and helping us to get underway.

As is normal - we will be providing free attendance for Staff Sergeant (E-5s) and below.  We will also be making our donations to the 633d SF Booster Club and the SF Key Spouse Club.  So that should mean one less car wash for each.

Come on out - whether you served as Security Forces, Security Police, Air Police, (or earlier Col Smoak).   It's a great time to start our first luncheon celebration in being part of this great Air Force tradition.

Thanks to Col Rundquist for your continuing support while at Air Combat Command!

Our April 29 Vietnam War Memorial Wall Wash - A Huge Success!

What a morning!  With water and enthusiasm (at 6:30AM) we're already off to a very good start!

Thanks to our members - Chief Master Sergeant (Retired) Gary Jones of Charleston South Carolina, two of our locals - Willie Squires  and Jim Statsny, who is also a Chaplain for the Vietnam Security Police Association, you guys are totally awesome - but also - Bob Sherouse who manages to get his groups of cub scout and boy scout members, their families and friends up very early in the morning to come out for our labor of love - washing the Vietnam War Veterans Memorial.

The scouts are so special to this event that Bob deserves an extra special vote of thanks. Bob, thanks again.  The scouts and their families make this already rewarding event very special for us.

This year, Eagle Chapter provided some goodies just to see if there is a need - dozens of doughnuts with an ice chest with bottles of ice cold water.  If there were a vote to see if this is a service that we should continue, there were only empty doughnut boxes and ice chips - I'd say the vote is YES!

Saturday August 26 is our next wall wash.  Contact me for more information.

Eagle Adds Individual Memorials at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial During Police Week
This year, I made a start on recognizing our Air Force Security Forces Airmen who are inscribed on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in a very different way.  In previous years, we've placed a laminated sheet in the center of our wreath that identified all of our SF Airmen who are inscribed on the wall.  This year, learning from other police organizations, we created individual memorials for each of the 20 Airmen.

Number 1 above is our wreath with the national and Defensor Fortis flags at the west entrance of the memorial.

Number 2 above shows the three individual memorials - those of Robert Scott Gray (panel 62), Stacey Edward Levay (panel 52, and Robert R. Dover (panel 48) above the panels where these three SF Airmen's names are inscribed near the west entrance.

Below is the individual memorial display for Airman Ruiz. Airman Ruiz was one of the two names inscribed this year (she along with Airman Nathan Sartain). These are printed on plasticized card board that are weather proof and can be reused every year.  Seen those real estate agent directionals in your neighborhood?  Same concept.   For family members and supporters I can replace the images below the description to provide personalized messages.

This is my idea.  I look forward to adding your improvements.  I will place images of each 'memorial' on our website at a future date.

Airman Laurie Lucas - Our Next Candidate For the National LE Officers Memorial
SF Airman Laurie Adell Lucas died August 19, 1991 as a result of a grenade mishap.

While working on the individual memorials this year, I discovered that the first female SF Airman to die while on active duty (Airman Lucas), died under similar circumstances as one of the Airmen who is inscribed on the NLEOM memorial, Airman Sean Elms who died during live fire exercise at Ft Dix.  Airman Laurie Lucas died from her injuries three days later following a grenade exercise at Andersen Air Force Base Guam.

I passed Airman Lucas' information along with application instructions and POCs at NLEOM to Chief Master Sergeant Jammie Space, the SF Chief at the 36th Security Forces Squadron at Andersen. The Chief is all over it.  More updates to follow.  Airman Lucas is one of three SF Airmen who died while serving on active duty that we are working with the units to have them added to the NLEOM.

If Airman Lucas looks familiar, you may recall that Eagle Chapter added Airman Lucas' information to the Women's Memorial in 2012.

AFA Announces A Major Change to Air Force Memorial Operations

Wreath AF Memorial "Over the past 10 years, the Air Force Association managed daily operations at the Air Force Memorial.  However, on April 1, 2017, the Air Force has assumed responsibility for these day-to-day functions.

Events can still be scheduled through their website. The Air Force Memorial Foundation will remain open and AFA will remain a vigilant supporter of the Air Force Memorial.

AFA is proud of the work of the Air Force Memorial Foundation, to include Mr. Ross Perot Jr., Lt Gen (Ret) Bob Springer and Air Power legend, Ollie Crawford.  We also thank CMSgt (Ret) Barbara Taylor for her outstanding management of the Air Force Memorial."

Eagle Chapter will miss the Chief!  Chief Taylor has been an inspiring and very thoughtful partner of activities at the memorial.  It was a personal treat for me to work with her each Memorial Day and Veterans Day.  She is now supporting the AFA as the Senior Manager of Corporate Relations. I'm sure we'll see her around the beltway.

We look forward to working with the Air Force in continuing our tradition of remembrance at the AF Memorial.

Eagle Chapter's Pentagon Luncheon Date Confirmed - October 10
We just received confirmation of our October 10 date for our 20th Anniversary SF Celebration date with the Headquarters Air Force Assistant Vice Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Stayce Harris. General Harris has graciously accepted our invitation to be our keynote speaker.  We deconflicted General Tullos' and Chief Hartz' calendars before scheduling Gen Harris - so all is clear. More details to follow.
Eagle Chapter Board Meeting - June 7

Our next chapter board meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 7 at 8:00PM. Eagle Chapter Board Meetings are open to members and significant others who would like to participate.

We hold our chapter board meetings on the first Wednesday of the month at 8PM via conference call.

Contact the Eagle Chapter Secretary, Chris Walker, for more information.

In closing, I was honored to receive this special invitation from the National LE Officers Memorial Fund to attend this year's candlelight vigil. I attend every year. It's a great opportunity to meet police from all over the US, meet our SF airmen and families who attend in reconition of their loss.

Thanks for your continuing support.  I look forward to seeing you at least once in our year to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of our Air Force Security Forces at the Eagle Chapter Luncheon.

It all starts at Langley on June 5th.  We hope to see you at the Eagle Chapter Luncheon celebration and again thanks to the 633d Security Forces Squadron for your enthusiastic support!

Very best regards,

Lee
