uea summit eruption: story of the Halemaʻumaʻu lava lake.
The story of
Kīlauea Volcano's ongoing
summit eruption within Halemaʻumaʻu is the focus of a recently released USGS documentary that will be introduced by Hawaiian Volcano Observatory geologist Janet Babb, who co-produced and co-wrote the video. The story recounts the formation and growth of the summit vent, describes the fluctuating lava lake within it, and features USGS scientists sharing their insights on various aspects of the eruption. Following the 24-minute video, USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory geologist Matt Patrick, one of the featured scientists in it, will provide an update on what's happening at Halemaʻumaʻu today and answer questions about the summit eruption.

DEPTH Facilitation blends structure, skills, and strategy with creativity and intuition to create dynamic, powerful experiential processes tailored uniquely to each individual. `Alala Outreach Presentation
Join the ʻAlalā Project staff on Thursday, January 18, 2018 from 7 - 8pm for a special outreach
presentation on the ʻAlalā, Hawai'i's native crow, at Volcano Art Center Ni'aulani Campus in Volcano
Village.
The ʻAlalā Project staff will present an update on the most recent reintroduction efforts to establish a wild
population of ʻAlalā, the endemic and endangered Hawaiian crow. Please join us to learn more about the
recovery of the ʻAlalā, a highly intelligent and unique crow species, integral to the native Hawaiian
ecosystems and culture.
The ʻAlalā Project is a partnership between the State of Hawaiʻi Division of Forestry and Wildlife, the US
Fish and Wildlife Service, and San Diego Zoo Global. This event is free, although a $5 donation is greatly
appreciated.
This evening is part of a once-a- month Thursday night series at the Volcano Art Center, focusing on art,
Hawaiian culture and our environment. The series is intended to inspire, enhance your appreciation of art and
life experience, while fostering community connections.
Volcano Art Center Ni'aulani Campus is located at 19-4074 Old Volcano Road in Volcano Village.

Stewardship at the Park
Volunteers are needed to help remove invasive, non-native plants that prevent native plants from growing in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Wear sturdy hiking shoes and long pants. Bring a hat, raingear, day pack, snacks and water. Gloves and tools are provided. No advance registration is required for groups under six, and there is no cost to participate, but park entrance fees apply.

Our next volunteer day is on Sunday January 21st from 10am-3pm. Please join us in restoring Hawaii's last native lowland rainforest below 1,000ft while learning about native and invasive species that may be present in your own backyard! Bring gloves, sturdy shoes/work boots, water, snacks, rain gear, and mosquito repellant.
Keau'ohana is located between Pahoa and Kalapana on HWY 130 between mile markers 16 and 17. Arrive at 10am for orientation and stay as long as you'd like.
