Story of Impact

Focused on a common vision, and implementing and practicing data-driven action, Partners across our community are hyper focused on real impact for kids.

In this edition we are excited to share a bit about the OUTSTANDING impact that our friends at Mapleton Education Foundation and Mapleton Public Schools are making.

Watch for ACYI #StoriesOfImpact like the one below in our monthly newsletter and across our social media channels.

Mapleton Education Foundation Closes Financial Aid Gap for 45 Students

This past month, the Mapleton Education Foundation made 45 scholarship awards totaling over $260,000.

For the first time in their history, the scholarships closed the financial gap for EVERY Scholarship Awardee!

Despite increases in the number of Coloradans who hold a credential, projections suggest Colorado will fall short of the number of residents with the necessary credentials to fill jobs. To meet workforce needs, it is imperative that we increase the credential completion success of all Colorado populations. READ MORE

The Launching of Collaborative Action Networks (CANs)

Collaborative Action Networks or CANs are the "guts" of the Adams County Youth Initiative and function as a collective impact mechanism that brings practitioners and partner organizations together to provide cross-sector coordination of efforts in areas that impact progress towards a shared goal.

Together, within the Collaborative Action Network, we will:
  • Focus on county-wide and disaggregated data
  • Work to understand barriers
  • Engage youth in our work
  • Focus on equity
  • Set goals and work on projects
  • Receive technical assistance and support to help accomplish goals
  • Seek resources to support efforts
  • Determine what works and scale those efforts

Collaborative Action Network Focus

We are focused on improving academic achievement and the safety and well-being of all children and youth by moving the needle in the six Cradle to Career Outcome areas.

National and local research indicates that when our youth are hitting targets in these key areas, their potential for long-term success greatly increases.

The Cradle to Career Outcomes Areas are HOW we measure success for youth long-term.

We are in the process of launching a CAN for five of the six Cradle to Career Areas.

Read below for a brief update on CAN Kick Offs...
Post-Secondary Success CAN

We have joined forces with the  Adams County Education Consortium (ACEC)
to focus shared action on improving post-secondary enrollment and completion rates on behalf of our youth.

Thank you to all partners who submitted an Intent to Engage form. We will be in touch in the near future with an official summer kick-off date for this group.

In the meantime, we would like to give a shout out to a few Teams that have already aligned work to this effort...

ADAMS COUNTY WORKS

A partnership between the Adams County Workforce CenterMetro State University and ACYI

This Team is working to increase the number of Adams County graduates who enroll and attend Metro State.
This Team is specifically focused on reducing "summer melt" that occurs when students who are enrolled in post-secondary programs graduate from high school and do not show up for their classes/programs in the Fall.

TALENT HUB

This Team is focusing on identifying systems barriers to scaling efforts that increase post-secondary enrollment and completion.

HORIZON HIGH SCHOOL
A dedicated Team at Horizon High School is laser focused on increasing the number of students who qualify for and participate in their SOAR program. The SOAR program works to create an environment where all Horizon High School SOAR students graduate and are prepared for post-secondary enrollment and 21st century leadership experiences.

High School Graduation CAN

High school graduation is associated with higher earnings, college attendance and graduation, and other measures of personal and social welfare. Educational attainment has been shown to predict health, marital outcomes and crime. Increasing the educational attainment of one generation improves the next generation's academic and social outcomes.

The Collaborative Action Network that will focus on High School Graduation Rates will officially kick off early Fall.

We are excited to give a shout out to the following Team who has already aligned their efforts to this Collaborative Action Network...

NORTHGLENN HIGH SCHOOL 'COME TO SCHOOL' PROGRAM

This Team is comprised of members from Northglenn High School, Adams 12 Five Star Schools Interventions Services Department and the 17th Judicial District Truancy Court.   Efforts from this group are aligned towards decreasing chronic absenteeism and ultimately to increase graduation rates.
8th Grade Math CAN

Middle grade math has become an important milestone for high school persistence, academic achievement, college attainment and general preparedness for the workforce. Research indicates that students successfully completing middle grade math perform better in geometry, more advanced algebra, trigonometry and calculus. A child's math curriculum also has a strong link to college enrollment.

Thank you to all partners who submitted an Intent to Engage form. We will be in touch in the near future with an official kick-off date for this group.

A special thank you to the following Teams who have already aligned their work to this Collaborative Action Network...

STUART MIDDLE SCHOOL

The Stuart Middle School Team is hyper focused on supporting students to take ownership of their work through a myriad of strategies including data visualization outlining their performance right in the classroom.  Not only has this Team already made great strides within their own school, they are also supporting scaling their best practices throughout School District 27J.

VIKAN MIDDLE SCHOOL

The 8th Grade Math Team at Vikan Middle School is practicing Continuous Improvement and also supporting student ownership over their work in the classroom.

ROCKY TOP MIDDLE SCHOOL

The 8th Grade Math Team at Rocky Mountain Middle School and the Adams 12 Five Star Schools Math Team are revving up to increase math scores through a focus on systems within their school. This team has applied for an opportunity to participate as part of a StriveTogether Cohort that will travel to Chicago with ACYI this Summer to dive deep into planning with expert process support. Watch for more to come...
3rd Grade Reading CAN

Literacy is critical to a child's academic success, and early grade reading is particularly crucial. Children in the early grades begin to transition from learning to read to reading to learn. Reading at grade level is one of the strongest predictors of later success in school, with data showing that disparities in literacy during the early grades are linked to persistent achievement gaps.

The Collaborative Action Network that will focus on 3rd Grade Reading efforts is slated to kick off early Fall.

Collective Impact vs. Collaboration: Do You Know the Differences?

ACYI is a proud member of the StriveTogether Cradle to Career Network, a national network of 70 community partnerships in 32 states and Washington D.C. working to improve Cradle to Career success for every child.

Jeff Edmondson, Founder and Executive Director of StriveTogether, shares his thoughts on the difference between collective impact and collaboration in a new blog published by Exponent Philanthropy, in partnership with the Annie E. Casey Foundation.
Collaboration is a common strategy to solve social problems, but  collective impact -aligning diverse stakeholders around shared outcomes-may be less familiar. And the two are not one and the same.
"There are a lot of folks out there talking about collective impact, and it is somewhat getting watered down as a result...replacing the word collaboration,"  according to Jeff Edmondson, founder and executive director of  StriveTogether , which helps communities identify and scale what works in education.  READ MORE
