LOWER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
1 Sivan 5777 / May 26, 2017                                  Parshas Bamidbar

YEAR'S END
This past year served as a bridge to our future which brought many positive changes to Bais Yaakov Elementary. As we celebrated 75 years since the school's founding, upper elementary and lower elementary divisions were created to help provide a more focused environment in which to educate your daughters.

On behalf of all the Bais Yaakov Lower Elementary staff, we would like to wish you and your families a very special Yom Tov and an enjoyable summer. It was a true kavod to have your daughters in school this year! We look forward to next year providing a caring, warm Torah educational environment where each girl can thrive and flourish!

CHUMASH PARTY
Bais Yaakov has a long standing minhag for First Grade girls to visit local Rabbonim in their shuls the day before the students receive their Chumashim in school. Each Rav shares his time with our talmidos and gives them an opportunity to learn about the importance of a connection with a Rav, kavod Bais Hakenesses and kavod HaTorah. In addition, with the assistance of the Rav, each girl has the opportunity to look the inside of a Sefer Torah and find her first initials in the Torah using a Yad, the special pointer used when reading the Torah.

Chumash Play 2017
Chumash Play 2017
It is a tremendous zechus to have so many illustrious leaders in our community like Rabbi Goldberger, Rabbi Horowitz, Rabbi Silber and Rabbi Teichman. We are grateful to the Rabbonim for these visits. May all our children have a lifelong connection with Rabbonim and their shuls!

In order to inaugurate their learning of Hashem's Torah in advance of Kabbolas HaTorah, your daughters also received their first Chumash.   In honor of this special occasion, the girls were also treated to a breakfast of pancakes and ice cream.

KRIAH AND READING TRAINING INITIATIVES
For the past month we have been conducting numerous in-service professional days for both our kindergarten and first grade staffs to upgrade our approaches to teaching
Alef Bais, Nekudos and reading accuracy and fluency. We have engaged the services of
Mrs. Leah Wenger to provide additional guidance, materials and strategies for our teachers, to help strengthen our kriah instruction and support. We look forward to making adjustments next year and hope you will see continued improvement in your daughters' proficiency.

Simultaneously, Mrs. Jane Baker has been offering our kindergarten teachers and assistants continued training in reading readiness with many techniques and strategies to best prepare our students for first grade. Here too, we anticipate continued improvement in our students' skills as they return to school for first grade!

We want to take the opportunity to wish Mrs Baker well in all her future undertakings. We thank you for your expertise, dedication and know how which you shared during your time with us here at Bais Yaakov, upgrading our approach to reading and phonemic awareness.

KINDERGARTEN SCIENCE PROGRAM
As the end of preschool year approaches, it's not only the children who are growing and blossoming! The Kindergarten teachers designed their curricular science spring theme to include planting flower and vegetable seeds, as well as observing caterpillars transform into butterflies. These multifaceted activities enable our children not only to learn about the scientific process of each of these nissim (miracles), but most importantly to observe, in awe, the incredible beauty HaKadosh Baruch Hu allows us to witness and appreciate in His creation.

The girls were able to watch for changes each day, write about and illustrate those changes and rejoice together as the sprouts burst forth and the "chrysalis" fell away to reveal a beautiful butterfly.  We are so appreciative for the opportunity to learn alongside our children as they blossom in the joy of discovery!

THE ZOOMOBILE!
Always on the lookout to augment the science curriculum with hands on activities which  harness our students' innate curiosity for animals, we had the opportunity to bring numerous small animals from the zoo to teach our second graders about the connection between climate and animals. This solidifies the lessons which they have studied in their classrooms. The girls heard from the zoo keepers all about the needs of different animals. A special thank you is in order to the PTA for funding initiatives that broaden our students' exposure to the world in which we live.

LAG BA'OMER VISITOR
Every year there are a variety of indoor and outdoor activities that we stage to honor
Lag Ba'Omer. They include jumping on inflatable moonbounces, running in assorted races and creating velvet artwork.

This year we were very fortunate to have a visitor, Mr. Lenny Attman, whose family has sponsored Lag Ba'Omer refreshments for the Elementary School, for many decades, in memory of Mr. Attman's mother, Mrs. Ida Attman, a"h.

Mr. Attman shared with our Second Graders that his mother started contributing to Bais Yaakov many years ago because she only had sons and no daughters of her own. As a result, she always felt a special bond with the girls of Bais Yaakov. Since Lag Ba'Omer was Mrs. Attman's birthdate, the Attman family has chosen to dedicate the day's activities in her memory. Mr. Attman was also regaled by our entire kindergarten who wore Lag Ba'Omer crowns and made the most beautiful presentation singing songs. We thank Mr. Attman for coming to visit with us. We also want to express our appreciation to
Mr. Gary Attman and the entire Attman family for their continued support of Bais Yaakov.
