Summer Is Right Around The Corner

This school year has flown by. The kindergartners who started the year with tears and no French are becoming confident speakers and "big kids" ready for 1st grade. And I am getting sentimental about saying goodbye to our 3rd graders as they prepare to go to Oak. As we wind down the current year, we are of course planning for summer and for next year. Here is an update on summer school 2017 from Roxanne Troxell, our summer school director:

It is that time of year again and summer school is quickly approaching! This year we will begin on  June 12th  and end on  July 21st . There will be no school  July 3rd through the 5th  in observance of Independence Day.

This year's theme is "Un pour tous, tous pour un!" Our students will participate in various community service projects and volunteering experiences. These opportunities will allow students to become directly involved in their community   while they acquire life skills and knowledge about the world around them. Each grade level will have the chance to embark on their own community service projects, from working with Harvesters to making encouraging cards for hospitalized children. In addition to these experiences, students will enjoy regular enrichment classes, presentations, and field trips.

We are so excited for another great summer!

Heather Royce,
Cherry Principal

Oak Construction To Start SoonOakconstruction

construction_hard_hat.jpg Construction will begin  June 5 on the new secure entry addition at the Oak Street campus. The exit from the parking lot will be closed throughout the construction process. This will mean changes in the drop-off and pick-up process.

Because there is only one entrance/exit for the parking lot please use the adjacent streets for drop-off and pick-up.

Drop-off locations:
  • 69th Street: your student can go up the stairs and enter using the northeast door.
  • 69th Terrace: your student can use the Southwest door facing Oak Street. This door is not typically open but it will be during summer school until 8:15. After 8:15 students will need to use the northeast door.
Pick-up locations are identical:
  • Park behind the buses near the stairs on 69th Street.
  • Pick-up along 69th Terrace.
Thank you for your assistance as we begin the final phase of our building project.

Is your child in 3rd grade? Are you a bit anxious about the move to Oak? Do you have questions about Oak routines that have not been answered yet? DON'T FRET!

A lot of these questions are addressed in the current 4th grade student handbook that is available on the AL website under Students > student handbooks. Some of the topics include homework expectations, arrival/pick-up time, gym clothes, etc.

Strangling Meal Debtmealdebt

Académie Lafayette started the new year with more than  $50,000 in unpaid lunch and breakfast bills. This strangling debt grew each week. To help remind parents of their bills the school began making regular phone calls to update parents. This has helped but we still have more than $43,000 in unpaid bills.

We know it's easy to forget and we also know that some students eat meals but do not tell their parents. However, because of the finger-scanning system we are able to accurately track student meal consumption.

Remember: Meal bills do not go away at the end of the school year; some of these bills are several years old.

Here's how you can help:
1. Contact Peggy Arians  ( parians@academielafayette.org) if you have questions about your meal bill. We are happy to work out a payment schedule that works with your budget.
2. Log on to your child's eSchoolCore account any time and check account balances, as well as grades, attendance, comments from teachers, etc. If you are having issues logging in to your child's eSchoolCore account, please contact Edem Addoh,  eaddoh@academielafayette.org.

Attention Incoming 8th Grade Familiesshotscook

The state of Missouri requires all new 8th graders to have proof of immunization for both the TDaP and the Meningococcal vaccinations  prior to beginning their 8th grade year. If you did not upload your child's immunization record to the School Mint system when you completed your re-enrollment packets, please send the immunization record to Alexis Cook, acook@academielafayette.org.
All immunization record must be dated after March 6, 2017 to provide the most up-to-date information.

Most students get these immunizations around age 11-12; please check with your child's physician to make sure they are up-to-date prior to sending in a new immunization record.

These immunizations are required to be on file with in the nurse's office prior to students beginning their 8 th grade year or attending summer school.

Medication Pick-Upmedication

As the school year comes to a close, please remember to pick up your student's medications from the nurse's office! Any medications left in the nurse's cabinet after  June 2 will be disposed of.

We clear out our medication cabinets between the last day of school and the first day of summer school as a safety measure to make sure that the medications we have on hand are not expired and all have the appropriate documentation on file with the nurse.

Please make sure that you have updated documentation ready prior to summer school for any medication your student will be taking at school.  If your student needs medication on hand for asthma or an allergy, please have your physician fill out an ACTION PLAN for those conditions. These are available on the AL web page in the Notes from the Nurses under the Parents tab.

All paperwork and new medications should be submitted to the nurse as soon as they are ready; we will store these separately in preparation for the summer and the 2017-2018 school year.

Thank you!

AL Recipe Bookrecipebook

Dear  Families,

A month or two ago I became irritated with my lack of new recipes for my family and took to Facebook to see if anyone had some good dinner ideas they were willing to share with me. That quickly morphed into an idea that it might be fun to develop a new PTSO fundraising project, an Académie Lafayette cookbook. I floated the idea to a few friends who are willing to help take on the challenge, but we need your recipe submissions to make this a success!

We are looking for recipes for all types of cuisine, cooking styles, dietary restrictions, and skill levels; our goal is for this to be a reflection of the diversity of the Académie Lafayette community.

If you are willing to share a recipe with us, please include the following information:
  1. A little bit about yourself ("John Doe, parent of Jack (4th grade) and Jill (1st Grade)")
  2. A small blurb about the preparation or the dish itself (for example: "This is our go-to evening meal when we have soccer practice; it's fast and the kids love it." "Leftovers for this dish reheat really well, just pop it in the oven at 350º for 15 minutes")
  3. An estimate of the "skill level" of the dish
  4. Any recommendations you might have for the dish ("Sometimes we like to substitute cranberries in place of raisins")
In an effort to keep every edition unique with minimal duplicate entries, we may not be able to include every submission in this year's edition but we will hold on to these recipes for possible inclusion in future editions of the book! You will be notified by email if your recipe is selected.

Please send your entries to either/or Anne Clark,  clarkworkscustom@gmail.com, or Alexis Cook,  arkjapapa@gmail.com

AL in the community

Académie Lafayette 7th grade students' artwork will be on digital display at the National WWI Museum and Memorial beginning in June! The Public Programs Coordinator and Educator is in the process of scanning the students' works for a digital display that will be in the Ellis Gallery.  The drawings and writings (in French, with English translations) are a response to the Vive l'Amérique exhibition. The exhibition showcases drawings by French students in 1917 of the American soldiers' arrival in France.

Our students studied several works, discussed the American and French alliance (then and now), and responded to one of two prompts with a drawing and short writing:
  • 1: When the American soldiers, nicknamed "doughboys" arrived in spring 1917, this group of French students drew pictures from their own perspectives. What do you think the American doughboys saw? Draw it from their perspective.
  • 2: If you were to draw a picture of life today to share with French students 100 years ago, what would you draw?
The works selected are truly extraordinary and create a unique connection with French and American history 100 years later. We hope that you will be able to make it out this summer to see the Vive l'Amérique exhibition. It is a free exhibition that runs through Oct. 15, 2017.  Find out all about it here !
