January 2018 - In This Issue:
Welcome Family Experience Intern, Caitlin Hansen

Please join us in welcoming Caitlin Hansen, our new Family Experience Intern. Caitlin is a Doctorate student studying Occupational Therapy at Huntington University, graduating May 2018. She will be working with Marci Corbin on family experience projects at our Limestone St. location.

Caitlin will be serving here full-time, Monday - Friday. Please make sure to introduce yourself if you see her around.

Changes in Check-In Process at Limestone

Just a reminder, Guest Services Volunteers (GSVs) will be partnering with Marci Corbin, our Family Experience Coordinator, or the Manager on Duty (MOD) when checking in families. GSVs will still meet and greet incoming families, gather their room keys and parking pass, copy their driver's license, provide the tour and help the families settle in. Marci or the MOD will work with the families to collect the necessary information for the registration card and fill out any other forms.

Several factors have led to this decision:

1. Marci's position is new and slightly different from the former Program Coordinator position. By allowing Marci or a MOD to meet the family upon check-in, Marci has a better ability to identify a family's specific need for additional resources and respond more quickly to them.

2. Because we are collecting more sensitive information such as medical information, information regarding criminal history, etc. the need for minimal sharing of information becomes greater. This will also eliminate potentially uncomfortable situations for the GSV asking guests to sign the Guest Suitability Form or addressing concerns about fees.

3. Reducing the number of people doing check-ins will allow for greater consistency in the sharing of information.

RMHCCIN is one of the last Houses to have volunteers facilitate check-ins. After careful thought and consideration, and weighing all contributing factors, we have ultimately decided this will further improve our guest experience at check-in.

We greatly appreciate all that you do for the House and recognize the vital role you play in check-ins.  Showing our guests around the House, making sure they are settled into their room, and talking with them to learn their story is key to making them feel at home.

As always, we appreciate your patience, understanding and feedback as we roll out this new procedure. If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please speak to the Manager on Duty.

Help Needed  at Limestone
  • We need help with covering the 3:30-6:30 p.m. GSV shift, every other Thursday during the months of February and March. Any help is appreciated! You do not need to fill all of the shifts.
  • We are looking for a van driver to drive our families at Limestone to and from Walmart every other week. This opportunity involves a two hour shift and the date and time is negotiable.
  • We are looking for a couple of volunteers to help keep the basement organized and help track inventory. Shifts and commitment is flexible.
Please contact Mary Friend at [email protected] for more information.
Working with Mac

We will have some additional opportunities to work with Mac, our Chief Cheer Officer and House therapy dog, coming soon. Needs may include taking Mac for a walk or playing with him at our Limestone Street location. Prior history of dog ownership and previous experience attending dog obedience training is desired.

Additional details will be announced soon. Please contact Mary Friend at [email protected] if you are interested in learning more.
2018 Calendars

We are in need of any extra 2018 wall calendars that you may have lying around to be placed in our guest rooms. If you have any you would like to donate, please give them to Patti Cooper at our Limestone Street location.
Yoga Anyone?

We are now offering complimentary yoga classes on the first Monday of each month from 7- 8 p.m. House guests, volunteers and staff are welcome to join. The next class will be held on Monday, February 5 so please join us! Thank you Kelly Alford from The Yoga Studio for your generous donation.
Look Who Was Caught Rolling Out The Red Carpet

Emilie Bender, Guest Services Assistant, recently caught Michelle Rogers, Guest Services Volunteer at Limestone displaying cooperation, communication and teamwork.

Emilie wrote: "Michelle is an Energizer bunny with a full charge! She goes non-stop until the end of her shift. Nothing is too trivial for her. She even took up my suggestion of disinfecting surfaces that we touch such as door knobs, handrails, phones, etc. What a go getter!"

Bert Harvey, Guest Services Assistant, recently caught  Cristina Pretorius, Guest Services Volunteer at Riley, displaying cooperation, communication and teamwork.

Bert wrote: "Recently it was very busy on Cristina's late afternoon shift and the dinner group did not show up. She immediately offered to stay and help prepare dinner and did not leave until 7 p.m.. She even came back a few minutes later when she realized she forgot to set out a certain dish in the refrigerator. "

Bert Harvey, Guest Services Assistant, recently caught  Nancy McDowell, Guest Services Volunteer at Limestone, displaying cooperation, communication and teamwork.

Bert wrote: "Nancy McDowell and her husband gave up part of their Christmas day to volunteer at Limestone. It was a very busy day with guests and house duties including a good amount of laundry to be done, rooms to be made up and extra guests for the Christmas meal. Both Nancy and Rick pitched in and did whatever needed to be done. I was fortunate to have them volunteering with me."

Thank you, Michelle, Cristina and Nancy. You are appreciated!

Congratulations! Your Crew Carwash pass is in the mail.

Remember, if you catch a volunteer rolling out the red carpet and providing an excellent family experience, please submit a nomination using the form below. Printed copies of this form are also available in the front office at both Limestone and Riley. Each month, all nominations are eligible for a random drawing for a Crew Carwash pass.

MISSION MOMENT
"This room was a game changer for our family. It gave us the flexibility to maintain a high level of involvement in our daughter's care in the NICU at Methodist while balancing the needs of a family of 7. Our 4 other kids stayed with us each weekend and were able to feel like a part of their sister's care.  Our daughter thrived on our daily presence and we were looking at discharge 4-5 weeks earlier than expected.  Doctors believe this directly correlated to how involved we were in her care. We are forever grateful."
