PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT - SUMMER READING!
Each week, we will be highlighting one of our programs or offering resources for parents to illustrate The Radcliffe Way!

While summer is definitely a time for fun in the sun, we also need to encourage our children's quest to become fluent and independent readers, as well as to give them a base of literature knowledge common with other children. Research consistently shows that struggling readers lose ground over the summer. Of even greater concern is the fact that these losses are cumulative, creating a wider gap each year between more proficient and less proficient students . For this reason, Radcliffe requires that each student complete three Summer Reading Projects before returning in the fall. Reading assignments have been personally selected by your child's current reading teacher and are tracked for completeness. These reading assignments will be shared with you soon; if you have questions, please contact your child's reading teacher, or Debbie Cohee-Wright or Diane McClary.

Radcliffe Creek School students in Orton-Gillingham reading classes are also invited to participate in a summer reading contest through Learning Ally. The Summer Reading Together event runs from June 1 through August 31 and the 20 students with the most reading activity nationally will win prizes. There will be an additional reward from the school for the Radcliffe Creek School students with the most activity. Students can be signed up for the contest through their Learning Ally accounts. Although this contest is optional this is a great opportunity to listen to audiobooks and earn rewards. Any questions about Learning Ally should be directed to Ashley Singer or your child's reading teacher.
K-8 SUMMER PROGRAM!
You have asked for it, and it is happening!  Yes, Radcliffe will host a Summer Program for students in our K-8 program.  The program will be three days a week, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, starting on July 5 and ending on August 3, closed on Tuesday, July 4.  Each day will begin with arrival at 8:15 and end with dismissal at 12:30.  Transportation will also be available through Prince Limousines. The cost of the summer program is $700. Half will be due on June 1 and the remainder due prior to the start date of July 5.

This summer program will provide Radcliffe students with the opportunity to continue on the progression of the acquisition of skills. Research supports the fact that students experience significant learning loss when they do not participate in educational activities over the summer. These students on average score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer than they did on the same tests at the end of the prior school year. Students with learning disabilities have the most difficulty with recoupment, and involvement in specifically designed programs are critical over the summer months.

A typical day will include workshops in: Keeping up with Summer Reading Projects, Orton/Gillingham Reading, Math, Written Expression, Art, Music, Computers, Outdoor Sports, Speech & Language Therapy, and/or Occupational Therapy.  Your child's day will be designed around the selection of workshops that you will choose.

Students in Ms. Usilton's Discovery classes are putting their new understanding of the Chesapeake Bay to the test in a unique way! By asking each habitat (Sam, Bennett, and Aden) strategic questions, one student (Virgil, an organism) must choose which would be their best "match" for a long and healthy relationship. They prepare by taking notes to the Dating Game theme song.
