Seminar on Finding Joy:
Edward Dufresne+ will lead a four-session seminar on the topic, "Finding Joy" at St. Brendan the Navigator following worship on Sundays beginning June 18, continuing August 13, and two additional Sundays still to be determined in September/October.
The main text for discussion will be The Book of Joy by the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, (Avery, New York, 2016). Topics will include: What Is Joy?, Joy and Suffering, Joy Comes with Perspective and Acceptance, Joy in Humility and Humor, The Joy in Forgiveness, Joy and Gratitude, Joy and Generosity, Joy and Compassion, Joy in Being One with the World, and Joy in Being One with God.
Please sign up if you are interested. Sign-up sheets and books for the seminar are available at the church for $23.

Saturday, May 20th was a perfect spring day for our semi-anuual clean-up
activities- bright sunshine and a strong wind.
Thank you to Pete Dane, Lis Ingoldsby, Mickey Jacoba, Carolyn Mor, Woody
Osborne, Richard Paget, Jo Jacob, and Barbara Kourajian for removing
and storing downstairs "inside storm windows" from the church, washing inside and outside windows in parish hall, church, and offices, installing screens in the parish hall and offices, mowing the lawn, sweeping and washing church entrances, preparing gardens for planting, and cleaning up the basement. What did I forget???
The kitchen committee which consists of Martha Dane, Miriam Antich, Barbara Wright, and Ruth Robinson worked hard cleaning the stove and organizing the kitchen.
Thank you one and all for your commitment to "spruce up" and keep clean our church and parish hall.

Scripture Notes for the Seventh Sunday in Easter:
We begin today the final week of Easter. Last Thursday we celebrated Jesus' ascension to the Father and his glorification. The Gospel reading today is a portion of the prayer he prayed on the night before his death, in which he consecrated his offering of himself to God, and prayed for us that we might
be made part of his offering. In baptism we have, in fact, received the
benefits of that prayer.
The reading from the Acts of the Apostles is the beginning of that book.
Luke describes Jesus' ascension and the promise that he would shortly empower his friends with the Holy Spirit. We are told that the disciples, including Jesus' mother, then spent the remaining days together in
prayer waiting for that gift of the Spirit, which would come upon them
on the Day of Pentecost.
In the passage from 1 Peter, we are exhorted to live lives in keeping with
our vocation given in baptism. If we are to suffer, let it be for doing good,
not because of wrongdoing. Such righteous suffering deepens our union with Christ. We are already assured by Jesus' resurrection that no suffering can destroy the eternal life we have been given.
We gather week by week to celebrate the Eucharist. The Ascension reminds
us that in the Eucharist Jesus is not made present by being brought down to us; he is present because in the Eucharist we are taken up to where he is.
For a moment, we are not only in the world but we become citizens of the eternal Kingdom.

In Our Prayers
We pray for those on our prayer list suffering and recovering from illnesses, especially Jan Place, William, Fred, Pat Stoneburner, Holly, Carolyn Angel, Colin MacNaught, Jim White, Shannon Cormier, Nancy Stearns, Daniel Harriman, Ingrid Bengis, Mary Adams, Diane, John, Tom, Claudice, Andy Nagle, Paul Burton, Jennifer Hulsey and her family Byron, Ben, and Clair. We pray, also, for those who love and care
for them.
We pray for those struggling with addiction and mental illness.
We pray for all those receiving care through Neighbor Care and for all
the residents of the Island Nursing Home, the Northern Bay Residential Facility, and their families.
We pray for the dying, and those who have died. We remember also
those who mourn.
We pray for the victims of gun violence-in our cities and towns, in our schools, in our places of worship, and in our homes.
We pray for the victims of the violence of armed conflicts around the world. We pray for those made refugees by the violence of armed
conflicts. We pray for the victims of terrorist attacks everywhere.
We pray for all who suffer the effects of domestic violence and the violence of bullying in our schools.
We pray for all peacemakers, and all those who work for justice.
We pray for all those serving in the armed forces of our country, remembering, especially, Craig, Chris, and Graham.
We pray for all who govern, and we pray for the concerns of our local community, remembering, especially, our children, our young people,
and our isolated elderly.
We pray for Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury; Suheil, Bishop of Jerusalem; Michael, our Presiding Bishop; Steve, our Bishop; for the members of our vestry; and for all our members, whose ministries are varied and far-reaching.
In the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer,
we pray for
those who have died in service to their country.
In the Anglican Cycle of Prayer
