PRINCIPAL LETTER

Dear WCA Families,

I want to take a moment to express my sincere appreciation to the staff, students, and families of WCA for all of their efforts this year.  I wish you all a safe and exciting summer. During the summer, please encourage your children to continue to read, learn and explore. Don't forget to work on our school motto over the summer: Go Anywhere, Do Anything! Time at the park, in the backyard, or in the mountains can be a great place to get lost in a book or let the imagination run wild.

This year has been full of hard work and we look forward to building on the foundation that we have established in our first two years. Next year, there will be both new and familiar faces as we grow our staff. Our expansion of administration staffing will help us provide more support and communication between all of our awesome staff, parents, and community.  Also,  we are looking forward to kicking off our middle school program with our 5th, 6th and 7th graders! Our staff is committed to equipping our students  through our school pillars of a Positive School Culture, Challenging Research Based Curriculum, Master Based Learning, and our International Focus with our Foreign Language Education program.

I am proud to be able to serve the wonderful students here and the entire WCA community.  On behalf of the staff of WCA, have a great summer with your families and, we look forward to seeing you next year! Please feel free to email me if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Lance Howard
WCA Principal

P.S. Congratulations to our Preschool and Kindergarten graduates, as well as our students moving into middle school next year! There is so much to celebrate this time of year!

BOARD CORNER

Summer Volunteer OpportunityWCA will have a booth at the Ducky Derby on  Saturday,
June 3
from  11:00am to 5:00pm . We need volunteers to staff the booth. Your volunteer hours can be used for the 2017-18 school year! Please SIGN-UP HERE  if you can help. Thank you for volunteering! Have a wonderful summer!

WCA Video! As we come to the end of our second year of school, we wanted to share this amazing video that was created by our very own WCA parent, Danielle Good. The name of her business is Danielle Good Films + Photo. She did an incredible job capturing the day in the life of a WCA student, along with the spirit and culture of World Compass Academy. We are grateful to all of our parent volunteers who take time out of their busy schedules to give back to the school. Thank you, Danielle, for this wonderful donation!

LETTER FROM THE BOARD

What a busy year it has been! Looking back, 2016-17 was certainly eventful for WCA.  Phase I of the Bond Process closed in February, and we now own our building! Our CSSI visit was completed in April. We had a successful fundraiser in May; thank you to our community for donating generously. Preparation for the Middle School Expansion is full steam ahead (and has been since September); Phase II of the Bond Process is now underway. Weekly meetings with the contractor, architects, and bankers will continue throughout the summer.

The Board and Administration have discussed various options for our field during the past few Board meetings (and even at the April PTO meeting). The dormant grass did not handle the foot traffic well this winter. The Board continues to evaluate both sod and synthetic turf, taking into account the timing of the Middle School construction. In preparation for the construction, we have been instructed not to irrigate the "pad" (new building site) or field this summer.

World Compass Academy continued to inspire and engage our students in new ways this year, and that is due to our wonderful faculty and staff. Thank you to our teachers, staff, and administration for making World Compass Academy an amazing place to learn. Last August, we welcomed Principal Howard to WCA, and our school has continued to flourish under his leadership. We are excited to see our Middle School Model develop under Dean Merkling. We welcome Ms. Tracy to the Administrative Team. We look forward to an exciting next year, filled with lots of learning (and lots of heavy equipment). Until then, enjoy your summer vacation!

See you next year,

The World Compass Academy Board of Directors

WCA COMPETITIONS

Battle of the Books

On Tuesday, May 23, WCA held its first in-house Battle of the Books competition. The contestants were responsible for reading four books from the official Douglas County Libraries Battle of the Books list and came ready to battle with their knowledge of these books. After 16 questions for each team, our winning 3rd and 4th grade team was comprised of Brian K, Lucia H, Owen S, and Owen W. Our winning 5th and 6th grade team was comprised of Satori M, Olivia L, and Alyssa T. There was a lot of fun had by all, both contestants and spectators. Next year, we are hoping to have World Compass Academy teams competing in the official Battle of the Books!

It has been an honor and a joy to be a part of all of these wonderful academic competitions as well as serve as the gifted facilitator at WCA this year. I can't wait to see all that next year brings!
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me, Kate Parker, at any time.

SAC Update. THANK YOU to all of our families who took the time to complete the Spring Parent Survey! Overall, we received very positive results, and we were able to identify some areas of improvement that you will see implemented starting with the 2017-2018 school year! Unfortunately, we did not meet our 75% goal for participation, so the students and staff did not receive an extra free dress day (hence why there was no previous statement made about it)!
Please view the survey results and thank you again for your participation!

Summer Camp. Please contact Shea-Leah Addenbrooke with any questions!

Book Fair! The spring book fair was a huge success! The school made a profit of $5200, which will allow us to purchase more books for the library, including Spanish, Mandarin and French books. Thank you so much to all of the great volunteers, as well as the parents and students who supported the fair.

Diabetes FundraiserThank you to everyone who donated change to the "Give Diabetes the Boot" fundraiser. We raised a total of $496.93 for Christian's fund toward a diabetic alert dog! Christian's mom was extremely grateful for the outpouring of support from WCA. It is so great to see our school community pull together to support a neighboring school and family.

DCSD Health Notes . Plan ahead for next school year! Please read this important information about  school medications and immunizations .

SCHOOL SUPPLY KITS

School Supply Kits are returning for the 2017-2018 school year! Online ordering will begin NEXT WEEK and will close in late June.  Information regarding online ordering will be posted on a regular basis on the PTO Facebook PagePlease join the group in order to receive updated purchasing information.  The supplier of the kits is Educational Products. The PTO had a great experience with their customer service last year and decided to work with them again this year. Also, EPI supports our Family to Family program and is donating 10 kits to our school again for the upcoming year!

Nearly 33% of the student body had kits ready for them on the first day of the 2016-2017 school year! Those parents didn't have to fight the crowds or stress over finding the correct items. Kits are delivered to the classrooms and labeled with the student's name, which  ensures that students have the necessary supplies to start the year off right on the first day of school.

Some helpful tips and information for parents to know when considering whether or not to purchase the kits:
  • Kits include name brand, teacher approved items.
  • Kits are created based on the school supply lists provided by grade level teachers and administration.
  • All kits, except 3rd grade, are gender neutral.
  • All kit items are guaranteed for the school year. Any broken or dried out items are eligible for replacement.
  • Donations for our Family to Family program will be available if you would like to contribute.
  • Look closely at the grade level lists to ensure that your student has all that is needed to start the school year. Not all items on the 2017-18 school supply lists are included in the kits. Kits do not include the following:
    • Binders (can be bought as an add-on item through the supplier)
    • Musical instrument for 4th grade (can be bought as an add-on item through the supplier).
    • Earbuds/earphones
    • Food items
    • Backpack
    • Supplies for Electives (5th - 7th grades only)
Please join and check the  PTO Facebook Page for to stay up to date!
