What is this MEGA Deanery Food Drive?

The ministry I ran in Trenton, New Jersey fed over 1,800 families per month at the height of the recession. To meet that demand, we became very creative with our food collection. Some volunteers taught us how to do a MEGA drive and I am bringing this method to St. Martin's for our June 3rd Food Drive.

Here is how it works: Volunteers from the parish will stand at the entrance and exit of the ACME on Mermaid Lane in Chestnut Hill. As people enter we will ask them if they want to shop for their hungry neighbors. When they say yes, we hand them a shopping list and a reusable shopping bag. As they exit, our volunteer receives their bag, says a hearty thank you, and puts the bag in our pickup truck.

Join us on June 4 for the Final Affairs Fair
Be a good ancestor; get your affairs in order now! Led by the Planned Giving Ministry. A great gift of love we give to our relatives is to have our affairs in order at the time of our dying and death. Using the 5 Big Questions tool we will help you start the key planning discussions in your family as you plan your final affairs. We will look at everything from planning your own funeral, to living wills and advance directives, to estate planning and planned gifts. Once you have children you need to be engaged in these questions, so all ages are encouraged to attend.

Education for Ministry

EfM is a parish-based theological education program out of the School of Theology of the University of the South in Sewanee,Tenn.  While it spans four years of study, participants commit one year at a time to meet weekly for a seminar facilitated by trained mentors. The program offers participants an in-depth look at Scripture, church history and tradition, and invites them to use that learning to strengthen their baptismal call to ministry and service.

EfM runs from September to early June. Registration for the fall 2017 class at St. Martin's will soon be underway. For more information please contact Barb Ballenger, Associate for Spiritual Formation and Care, at  [email protected] or call  214-247-7466.

Bright Colors Concert for Refugees a Success!
The May 13 Bright Colors on a Dark Canvas concert was a great success, raising over $5,000 and bringing city-wide attention to our ministry and especially the refugees we serve. Many thanks to all those who helped make it happen, attended, and contributed. Organized mostly in the final week, we didn't have a chance to appropriately thank all the people who worked with Michele Haines to make the reception following the concert happen. Many thanks to the following contributors:
  • Bredenbeck's Bakery and Ice Cream Parlor
  • The Night Kitchen Bakery
  • Talula's Garden
  • DiBruno's Cheese Shop
  • Kanella's South
  • Fork
  • Miel Patisserie
  • Spring Mill Café

Kneeler Tenders Needed!
Howard Goldstein is the new chair of the Needlepoint Guild; presently there are 8 members whose charge is to vacuum the kneelers in the altar area and the 60-odd hassocks in the pews that have designs. We do this for moth control and for general upkeep of these treasures. You can learn about the story behind the kneelers and hassocks by picking up the beautiful booklet that is on the table in the vestibule of the Parish House. We need more help! It takes one person one hour to vacuum the kneelers in the altar, and two people about two hours to vacuum the pew hassocks. With more people involved, it would mean that you would be called to help once a month or less.
St. James School Summer Camp Challenge!
For children living in poverty, summer camp is not a vacation as parents struggle to find safe, affordable options for spending  long summer days. In addition, many children lose ground in reading and math during the summer months. If you are able, click here to donate today. For questions about donations of time, talent or treasure, click here to email Laura Sibson.
Volunteer Receptionist wanted at St. James School
St. James School seeks front desk volunteers. Be that friendly voice on the phone or a warm smile for the visitor! A great way to get engaged in a wonderful school nearby! To volunteer, click here to email The Rev. Jarrett Kerbel or contact him by calling the parish office at 215-247-7466.
