Dear St. George Families,
As I look out my office window on this beautiful sunny spring day, I am reminded how grateful I am to be principal of St. George Catholic School. This past school year has been full of a multitude of blessings and challenges. I wanted to take this opportunity to share some of those blessings with you.
We had just begun school in August when our community was hit with devastating flooding. Through this tragedy our school and parish community rose to meet the challenge of helping others, teams of families got together to serve others in the form of human labor, helping families clean out their homes, providing donations of clothing, cleaning supplies and monetary gifts.
In October, our St. George Parish Fair was blessed with beautiful weather and record income. Thanks to the generosity and dedication of the hundreds of school volunteers, our community came together and held an amazing event. Mr. Scott Johnson and his dedicated steering committee are to be commended for their work. It won't be that long until it's fair time again!
In November St. George Catholic School received national recognition by being named a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. Only 50 non-public schools across our nation were recipients of this prestigious award. We received this honor in our nation's capitol.
Shortly after the New Year, our St. George Auction, led by Catherine Alford, was an amazing celebration of the spirit of our St. George community. Again, we had record profits. And shared in an evening of fun and camaraderie.
Early in the spring, our students demonstrated that hard work and perseverance pays off. Our ACT Aspire Standardized Test Scores rank our school in the top 15% of all schools in the nation.
We recently received our ACRE scores. Fifth and 8th grade took the test, one hundred percent of our students were ranked either advanced or proficient. Yes that is correct 100%! This is even more outstanding when the national average for all catholic schools is 71%.
Later in the spring we dedicated our new church with Bishop Meunch presiding. Shortly after, we celebrated our first school Mass. Our new church is a testament to our community and has raised the faith at St. George Parish.
Yes, we are proud of our students, teachers and staff and we have much to be grateful for. But we are not resting on our past accomplishments. The coming school year is sure to provide us more blessings and challenges.
We will be implementing a one-to-one Chrome book learning environment in our middle school by the end of the first nine weeks. Students will have access to their own device during the entire school day and will be able to access their documents and projects via the cloud 24/7 from anywhere in the world via an Internet connection. Students in grades 4 and 5 will be working in a two student per device learning environment increasing their access to technology significantly. Our students will begin to access more digital learning opportunities.
There will be a Chrome book parent evening in the fall to show you some of the new and innovative ways that students will be using this technology. I will keep you informed as we move forward with this new initiative.
I hope that all of you have a wonderful summer, and some time to rest, relax and connect as a family. Don't forget to go to Mass! May God continue to bless you and your family.
Peace,
Jack Nelson
