Spring Fling Brings Seasoned Physicians Together
With Residents and Students to Network, Learn
Spring Fling 2017 attendees.
Dozens of medical students and residents learned from guest speakers and active physicians at the MAFP Spring Fling, held April 20-21 in Jackson.

The annual event is sponsored by the MAFP Foundation and is free of charge to students and residents. The main purposes of the event were to provide a great education opportunity, and enable residents and students to network with practicing family physicians.

Students attended hands-on sessions on IUDs and sports medicine in addition to hearing practical advice from physicians who've been in their shoes.

"The lectures were student and resident focused, the workshops were informative and helped develop practical skills, and social activities provided ample opportunity to network," one attendee said in an evaluation.

Next year's event: April 20-21, 2018

MAFP Honored for 100% Resident Membership
At a recent national conference in Kansas City, MS Academy of Family Physicians was recognized for having 100% resident membership from Mississippi's four Family Medicine residency programs. Residents pay only $30 per year for membership and enjoy all the rights and privileges active members receive. All new residents are reminded to join for the coming year.
UMMC Students Win National Award for Tar Wars
For the second year running, University of Mississippi Medical Center students who are part of the Family Medicine Interest Group won a national award for anti-tobacco education.

The group was notified Apr. 25 that they won First Prize and a $500 cash award in the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Tar Wars Challenge.  Dr. David Norris, MD, received the news. UMMC also won the same award in 2016.

Tar Wars is a tobacco education program sponsored by AAFP. Each M3 at the University of Miss. Medical Center, and each M1 at the William Carey University School of Medicine, learns about Tar Wars from MAFP staff and gives an anti-tobacco presentation to local schoolchildren as part of their studies.

The 2017 Student Ambassadors are:
  • Jackson Browning (M1 at UMMC)
  • Leah Burch (M3 at UMMC)
  • Emily Bustin (M3 at UMMC)
