     NAFSA Academy Update & Coach Recruitment

    Update from NAFSA Academy 14
    Submitted by Jessica Hall, Academy Coach
    ------------------
    We've had a great start to our Academy 14 year in Region VII. Because of your support, we have 5 wonderful trainees from Region VII this year: Kathleen Monich of Georgia State University, Trang Nguyen of the University of Alabama, Kristi Clayton of the University of South Alabama, Julie Champlin of Agnes Scott, and Ashley Watson of Tennessee Tech. Trainees are new to the field and have been enthusiastic with the Academy activities. They look forward to where the program is taking them professionally and personally, and are truly appreciative of this opportunity.

    In March, the entire Academy class travelled to Emory University in Atlanta for an intensive 3 day conference, including workshops in all areas of international education. Coaches and the leadership team provided workshops in Comprehensive Internationalization, Advocacy, Education Abroad, International Student Advising, and International Admissions. It was a great experience, with a lot of community building and idea exchange. Spring training for trainees, and coaches alike, was vital for building cohort relationships, exposing trainees to international education and it many facets, and sparking passion for future advocates in the field.

    Throughout April coaches and trainees have been working together. Coaches have been providing guidance while trainees have been building on their learning plans, deciding where they want to go with the Academy experience, and engaging as a cohort. This involves cohort meetings, one-one-one meetings, participating in virtual trainings, and other Academy activities, the most recent of which is a summer project.

    Over the past couple of months, we have also been preparing trainees for the upcoming NAFSA National Conference in Los Angeles. Many of our trainees have never attended an Annual Conference and are very excited about their first experience. At the conference we'll be seeing presentations from trainees, where they will tell the cohort about what progress has been made toward learning plan objectives and receive feedback from their fellow trainees. They are excited about attending sessions and networking with colleagues from around the U.S. the Region VII Cohort will also be attending the Regional update meeting at the Annual Conference to introduce themselves and say thank you in person to our Region !

    As coaches, this has been an amazing experience for us to develop our leadership skills and give back to the professional community. It is due to your support that we are able to offer such an important program to folks in the field that want to grow, give back, affect change, and support follow international educators. That said, we are now recruiting for new Academy Coaches.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    New Designs for  Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) and Employment Authorization Documents (EAD)
    On April 19, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced it was redesigning the Permanent Resident Card (also known as a Green Card) and the Employment Authorization Document (EAD) as part of the Next Generation Secure Identification Document Project.
    USCIS will begin issuing the new cards on May 1, 2017.

    These redesigns use enhanced graphics and fraud-resistant security features to create cards that are highly secure and more tamper-resistant than cards currently in use.

    The new Green Cards and EADs will:
    • Display the individual's photos on both sides;
    • Show a unique graphic image and color palette:
      • Green Cards will have an image of the Statue of Liberty and a predominately green palette;
      • EAD cards will have an image of a bald eagle and a predominately red palette;
    • Have embedded holographic images; and
    • No longer display the individual's signature.
    Also, Green Cards will no longer have an optical stripe on the back.
